Bring low the high tree, lift high the lowly tree, wither up the green tree, and make the withered tree bloom. Ezekiel 17, part of verse 24 I saw a man standing on the corner holding a sign as I drove into a gas station. The sign stated that he was a veteran and that he needed help. I looked directly the man. He was well dressed. He was of a different race than I. He looked directly at me. I felt compassion. My brain started an assessment process. Is he really in need? How could I help? What is his real need? Where did he come from? Why am I so intent on helping him? What would he do with money if I gave him money? Doesn t the VA center provide for him? Am I bad for questioning his motives? What are my motives? Am I naı ve? Gullible? Will I be taken advantage of? How can I not help someone so courageous as to hold a sign and publically ask for help? After illing my gas tank I went into the gas station to pay. I made the decision to buy some food for the man. I searched the aisles to ind something healthier than candy bars and chips. I chose peanuts. I stopped my car and opened the window meeting the man face to face. I handed the peanuts to the man and told him that I would keep him in my heart. As he thanked me I noticed that he had no teeth. I couldn t speak. I shut my window and drove off. I had just given peanuts to a man with no teeth. If he was hungry I just made matters worse. I felt lousy. How often do we give without understanding the need, ours and theirs? Seeking to understand our needs and seeking to understand the needs of others is one way to participate in God s plan to balance the imbalances.
