Page 1 7. Narrative Description This is a three-story commercial building constructed in 1912 of tile blocks with a brick façade. The building is three bays wide, though non-symmetrical with a wider west bay. The four original brick storefront columns with quoins remain, with storefront windows and doors dating to a later remodel. The storefront frieze has inset brick rectangular panels. The upper story windows appear to retain original wood sashes and transoms. The west bay on both upper stories has a set of three windows while the middle and right bays have a set of two windows. Both stories have continuous stone sills and no lintel detail. The second story windows have one-over-one-light double-hung wood sashes with shared prism glass transoms. The third story windows have one-over-one-light double-hung wood sashes. The small stone cornice line on the frieze remains, but historic photographs show a broader stone cornice above it was removed prior to 1956 (perhaps exposing or resulting in the yellow brick). The east side of the building is set west of the property line to provide vehicular access to the center door at the base of the elevator. First story windows have been boarded up on this side, but the multilight metal upper windows remain visible. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance The appears to contribute historically and architecturally to the potential Downtown Commercial Historic District (#29-03685). The building was constructed in 1912 for the implement business of Jacob B. Gabeline. An implement / farm machinery business then occupied this building through the end of the 1930s. By 1947, Sears Roebuck & Company opened their farm store in this building, maintaining their department store at 515 Jefferson. The building is an excellent example of a simple three-story brick building from this period. This history and architecture contributes to the significance of the historic district. The building may also be individually eligible under Criterion A for its association with the Gabeline Implements or the Sears Roebuck Farm Store. Further research and assessment of the interior would be required for full individual evaluation. The building is currently listed as contributing in the West Jefferson Street Historic District (1991, #29-00001). Per the 1900 fire insurance map, earlier small buildings sat on the south section of Lot 925, spanning the west half of the north side of the 700 block of Jefferson. Samuel C. Scotten owned this entire lot, and he teamed up with Jacob B. Gabeline to construct a three-story building for Gabeline s implement business in 1912 ( Scotten Building, Hawk-Eye, November 28, 1915). Construction was started in July 1912, and the building was occupied by February 1913 (Hawk-Eye, July 15, 1922, part 2, page 7; Hawk-Eye, February 19, 1913, 10). On February 19, 1913, the Hawk-Eye ran an advertisement for J.B. Gabeline s New Implement and Buggy House at 712-714 Jefferson. The Orchard Automobile Company advertised their 1913 models in their new permanent showroom in the New Gabeline Implement Building at 712-14 Jefferson on March 21, 1913 (page 3). The 1916 city directory lists Jacob B. Gabeline selling agricultural implements at 712-714 and also serving as president of Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank. The 1920-21 city directory then lists Burlington Implement Company at 712-714 Jefferson, run by G.C. Darnall and G.R. Swem. They continue to be listed here in 1924. By 1926, the name has evolved to

Page 2 Burlington Farm Machinery Company, managed by R.M. Gregg. Burlington Farm Machinery Company is then listed here in 1928 and 1930, run by George L. Schweizer. The 1930 Sanborn map shows the three-story building, constructed of tile block with a brick face. Agricultural implements is indicated as the use. George L. Schweizer continued to run the business here through the 1930s, though the name listed changed. In 1933, the listing is for Burlington Farm Machinery Company and International Harvester. In 1935, it was the McCormick Deering Store and International Harvester. The 1937 city directory simply lists Burlington Farm Machinery Company, with George L. Schweizer as president. The building was then vacant in 1940. In 1942, the National Youth Administration is listed at 712-714 Jefferson. Northrup Hatchery is then listed here in 1945. Sears Roebuck and Company then opened their farm store in this building by 1947. Street listings indicate the Sears Roebuck Farm Store at 712-718 Jefferson, with the department store at 515 Jefferson. In 1951, the Sears Roebuck Farm Store is then listed at 714-718 Jefferson, indicating space in this building as well as the east half of the building to the west at 716-722 Jefferson. The 1951 directory then lists the Sears Roebuck & Co service station at 712 Jefferson, which appears to be the one-story building to the east (currently 708 Jefferson). Directories throughout the 1950s and into the 1960s show the same address listings, with Sears Roebuck & Company Farm Store at 714-718 Jefferson and the service station at 712 Jefferson. By 1968, Sears Roebuck & Company is simply listed at 712 Jefferson. It is currently occupied by Five Flags, a company that provides janitorial, pool, and spa supplies to the area.
