Issue 180 August 2014 The monthly newsletter of the West Lane Baptists & Methodists & Slack Lane Baptists The holidays are here well they are for some of us anyway! The word holiday comes from the Old English word hāligdæg (hālig "holy" + dæg "day"). The word originally referred only to special religious days. In modern use, it means any special day of rest or relaxation, as opposed to normal days away from work or school. In Genesis we have the idea that God worked for 6 days and then rested on the 7 th day. Since New Testament times we have the practice of starting the week with a day of rest on a Sunday and then having our working week. This has become confused with the common understanding of Saturday and Sunday being known as the weekend. A question for us all to consider is which comes first for us, Work and then Rest, or Rest and then Work? And a related question, Do we live to work or work to live?
The preacher from Ecclesiastes suggests there is a time for everything and we should work hard and enjoy the simple things of life, eating and drinking. The writer of the letter to the Colossians says Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people In Matthew s gospel, chapter 6 verses 25-34, Jesus is anxious that noone worries too much about the clothes they wear, the food they will eat and the plans they have for tomorrow. Instead Jesus commends his followers to live for today, in the present moment, and to give God thanks for it be it a holiday or a regular day at work. This seems like good sense to me, so wherever you are, and whatever you are doing, know that you belong to God and enjoy this very moment. Every blessing, Chris. Church Family News As many of you will know Doris Hopkinson died on Monday 14 th July. She was a wonderful character and will be sorely missed by many in all our congregations. At the time of newsletter copying the funeral was being arranged for West Lane Baptist Chapel on Monday 28 th July, 11.00am, followed by burial. Our thanks go to the Rev. Brian Carpenter for stepping up and taking the funeral as Chris is away. Please note: The deadline for the next Newsletter is one week earlier than usual because of holidays. All contributions should be in by Sunday 17 th August for the distribution of the September Newsletter on Sunday 24 th August. The rotas for porch welcome, readings, and prayers covering September to December have been posted on the board in the foyer. If you are unable to do duty on a particular date, please arrange a swap with someone else on the rota. As a last resort, please let Ron know. Instead of our usual afternoon service on the second Sunday of the month (August 10 th ) we are invited to join the congregation at our sister church in Oxenhope. We have joined them several times over the last few years as a means of strengthening ties between Methodist churches in the Worth Valley & we look forward to this. Friends from Lees will also be present at the service led by Maurice Baren, who is one of our circuit stewards. The Methodist system involves lay people in the running of both individual churches and circuits and Maurice is representing the Worth Valley for us. Haworth will be playing host to a Churches Together service at 10.30am on August 31 st. We are hoping for support from people of various Christian denominations in Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury on this occasion, having already joined friends at a similar service at Lees in June.
