First Presbyterian Church September 3, 2017 10:00 a.m. + + + Embodying Christ s inclusive love with heart, mind, and service

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) September 3, 2017 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Prelude Be Still and Know/Be Still, My Soul Hayes Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit Draw us in the Spirit s tether, for when humbly in your name two or three are met together, You are in the midst of them. Alleluia! Alleluia! Here we touch your garment s hem. (hymn 529) *Call to Worship (from Psalm 103) Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless God s holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all God s benefits Who redeems your life from the Pit and crowns you with steadfast love and mercy; Who satisfies you with goodness and showers you with grace and compassion. *Hymn 404 *Invitation to Confession What Is This Place *Prayer of Confession Almighty God, you love us, but we have not loved you. You call, but we have not listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We condone evil, prejudice, warfare, and greed. God of grace, help us to admit our sin, so that as you come to us in mercy, we may repent, turn to you, and receive forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. (time for silent confession) And let God s people say: Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. *Sung Response (hymn 447) We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. (repeat) 2

Time with the Children Children, second grade and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps. Sharon Youngs Anthem We Gather at Your Table, Lord Ehret Scripture Reading Exodus 3:1-15 Sermon Paying Attention? Sharon Youngs *Affirmation of Faith (adapted from A Declaration of Faith) God sends us to exercise compassion. Out of concern for justice in the social order, God has never forgotten the needs of individuals. In the end the Lord will judge all persons by the simple, unremembered acts of kindness they did or failed to do for the least of their sisters and brothers. We acknowledge God is at work here and now when people show personal concern for one another and work to make helping agencies, including the church itself, more compassionate. We believe God sends us to risk our own peace and comfort in compassion for our neighbors. Amen. The Sacrament of Holy Communion Hymn 510 Invitation to the Lord s Table We Gather Here in Jesus Name Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise with all the faithful of every time and place who forever sing to the glory of your name: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ will come again to make all things new. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering your gracious acts in Jesus Christ all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. 3

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread, Pouring of the Cup Sharing of the Elements [Communion is served by intinction. You are invited to come forward, take a piece of bread (all gluten-free), dip it into the chalice, and then eat it.] Prayer after Communion Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts Offertory Solitude Riggs *Doxology (hymn 606) and Prayer of Dedication Reception of New Member: Jane Akers Question to congregation: Will we, the members of First Presbyterian Church, surround and support Jane with our love and care, and will we share with her the good news of the gospel as we grow together and share Christ s love with all? We will. *Hymn 726 *Charge and Blessing Will You Come and Follow Me *Congregational Response (see inside back cover of hymnal) Irish Blessing Postlude Thine Be the Glory Frick + + + + + Today s flowers are given by Linda Fall to the glory of God. 4

WORSHIP NOTES Our gathering hymn was written by Hubertus Gerardus Josephus Henricus Oosterhuis, b. 1933. He is the author of over 60 books, more than 700 hymns and songs, Psalm interpretations, and prayers. Oosterhuis was a Jesuit and is a Roman Catholic priest. Our affirmation of faith today is adapted from A Declaration of Faith, a 1976 study document from the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS).
