OUR PARISH MISSION Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society. Old St. Mary s Church - 1500 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605 Chicago s First Catholic Parish - Established in 1833 - The Paulist Fathers serving our parish since October 12, 1903.

Page Two Old St. Mary s Church March 3, 2019 PASTOR S WHITE BOARD Dear Parishioners, with Lent about to start, I wanted to share with you a great way to begin Lent. It is called a parish mission, and our parish mission this year is called, "the Power of Mercy." Missions are intended to refresh, renew and revitalize the participants in a spiritual way - how appropriate for the start of Lent. Fr. Bob Cary, CSP will be our mission guide. Also, we will be blessed during Lent to have Dan Macalinao, a Paulist Novice, who will also be helping with our parish mission. Below is an overview of the Mission. Fr. Brad What Jesus never said: Feed the hungry only if they have papers. Clothe the naked only if they re from your country. Welcome the stranger only if there s zero risk. Help the poor only if it s convenient. Love your neighbor only if they look like you. - James Mar n, S.J.

This declaration dispensed Hecker s four American companions Clarence Walworth, Augustine Hewit, George Deshon, and Francis Baker from their vows in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists. [Note: Hecker had already been dismissed by the Redemptorists.] The Vatican authorized these five to work for the evangelization of the United States under the auspices of the local bishops. Thus, March 6 is a significant anniversary date for the Paulists and the Paulist Associates. Hecker, in Rome on March 9, 1858, wrote to his four companions: The Pope has spoken, and the American Fathers, including myself, are dispensed from their vows. The decree is not in my hands, but Cardinal Barnabo read it to me last evening. The General is not mentioned in it, and no attention whatever is paid to his action in my regard. The other Fathers are dispensed in view of the petition they made, as the demand for separation as Redemptorists would destroy the unity of the Congregation, and in the dispensation I am associated with them. The Cardinal [Barnabo] is wholly content; says that I must ask immediately for an audience to thank the Pope. Now let us thank God for our success. " In the next few months, Hecker, Walworth, Hewit, Deshon, and Baker organized themselves under a rule (very similar to the Redemptorist rule formulated by St. Alphonsus Liguori) and founded the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle in New York City on July 7, 1858. Don t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour. SPECIAL COLLECTION Next Weekend, March 9/10, we take up a Special Collection for the Church in Eastern Europe. Page Six OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH March 3, 2019 MINDFULNESS The prac ce of mindfulness can be included in our lives in many ways. A regular medita on prac ce is helpful, but it isn t always possible in our busy lives! Mindfulness can also be found in: - mes of prayer and contempla on -being immersed in the rituals of our faith tradi- on - me in nature -listening to music -working on a cra or crea ve project (or even just cleaning the house!) -taking a moment to be s ll and breathe -really being present for those we love, or even just the person who happens to be in front of us at this moment! I use mindfulness in my counseling work, in how I try to be present for the person si ng in front of me, and in being present for my own experience as a therapist. I can also help you learn to use mindfulness techniques in your daily life, for relief of symptoms of anxiety or depression, and for self -awareness and reflec on. For more informa on, or to schedule a session, I can be reached by email at rachelschrips@icloud.com, or by phone at 872-216-1808. Rachel Schripsema, Parish Counselor Do you like seeing the children come forward during mass on Sunday? Have you ever wondered what the children learn in class? Would you like to grow closer to GOD and grow in Faith? Now is the time to say YES! The Children s Liturgy team needs You! We are especially in need of volunteers for the 3rd and 4th weekends of the month. Liturgy of the Word for Children takes place at the 8 am Mass. Currently we can only offer it on the first two weekends of the month. We need adults or whole families who are willing to help just one Sunday per month at the 8 am Mass on either the 3rd or 4th Sunday of the month. This is a great ministry for whole families with school age children to do together. We are seeking whole families OR adults for our team.
