From the Pastor s Desk ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA Blessings and joy as we conclude the Easter season with Pentecost, the socalled Birthday of the Church. As we began Easter, we sang throughout the Octave: Alleluia, Alleluia. So too at the Mass on Pentecost we conclude the season with a sung double alleluia. On this first Sunday of June, we happily recognize, congratulate and bless those who are members of the Class of 2017. While commencement, literally a beginning, is about what happens next, the graduation rites also allow one to look back and appreciate with gratitude what one has achieved during his or her studies. The following prayer For Graduation was composed by Jim Dinn for Pax Christi USA: Spirit of Wisdom, whose truth fills our world and invites us into a lifetime of learning, bless these graduates. Give them joy and a sense of accomplishment in what they have achieved. But give them also a thirst for knowledge. Make them seekers who will enjoy the process of discovery. Let their education go beyond classrooms and books. Sensitize them to the lessons of experience and the wisdom of the heart. Open them to faith as well as reason, intuition as well as logic. Give them curiosity that goes beyond partial answers and old insights. But through all their life give them an inner peace so they are neither inflated by what they know nor frustrated by what is still beyond their grasp. Abiding teacher, may this graduation signal the beginning of their larger education. Bless them and all of us with your wisdom and peace. Amen We have entered the final month of our fiscal year. My thanks to the members of our Finance Committee and to all our parishioners, benefactors, donors, and friends for financially supporting the work and mission of Saint Hugh Parish. The envelope next week for retired priests helps to support my four living predecessors: Fathers O Connor, Stokus, Moran, and Burnell. Your generosity is appreciated. While the liturgical calendar returns to Ordinary Time (think Green) following Pentecost, the two Sundays following the Easter Season are given to a pair of so-called feasts of devotion. Next weekend is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity and the following weekend is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Since what we are celebrating is not a specific event in the life of Jesus, these are sometimes referred to as idea feasts. Two groupings are completing the pilot phase of Renew My Church. Another 4-6 groupings (one per vicariate) are expected to begin this summer. I hope to learn more at a day long meeting for the priests of the Archdiocese on Thursday June 8. Pray for this local (diocesan) church and for our parish during this time of transformation. The official Renew My Church prayer is reprinted on page three of this bulletin. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel June Gathering Our Society of Catholic Women will complete the fiscal year beginning with dinner at 6:00pm on Monday June 5. When people think of a Catholic wedding, they often imagine an extravagant event with expensive clothes, multiple attendants, many ministers, and an elegant ceremony. Many beautiful weddings have happened that way. Others are done more simply. Sadly, some couples who are otherwise ready for marriage put off the wedding because they cannot afford the ceremony, the reception, and other societal expectations. They may even be tempted to choose a civil ceremony at a courthouse just to avoid the complications of a Catholic wedding. But a Catholic wedding does not have to be big or expensive. The ceremony can be conducted as simply as a typical daily mass or prayer service in a parish church. Special clothes and a procession are not necessary. There should be Scripture readings, the exchange of consent, the blessings, and some prayers. A little music would be nice, but even that is not essential. The ceremony should take place at church. A Catholic wedding does not demand the participation of a large number of people. Just a bare minimum must be there: a priest or a deacon must witness the exchange of the couple s consent, and two other witnesses must be present, but that s all. Even in the smallest of ceremonies, some family members and close friends will want to attend, but the event can be kept very small. A wedding is an important occasion for the couple, their families, the church, and the society that will know them as husband and wife. For that reason, most weddings require the coordination of many complicated demands. But for good reasons, the ceremony can be done more simply, and it is still a Catholic wedding. In some American dioceses, the Mass is offered every Sunday in more than thirty different languages, including the silent praise of American Sign Language. Fifty years ago, the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was grounded firmly in Latin, which is to the present day still the official language of the Roman Rite. Very few people were fluent in Latin, even though in those days Latin was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of Latin since it is not difficult to pronounce. The clergy were normally minimally competent in Latin, since much of seminary education was conducted in that language. When the Second Vatican Council was convened, all of the debate and daily work of the council was to be in Latin. In the first session in 1962, Boston's Cardinal Richard Cushing continually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn't done. He convinced the fathers when he rose to speak in fairly fluent Latin in an unforgettable Boston twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous translation system funded by the people of Boston. The ordinary everyday language of the people, the vernacular, had arrived at the Vatican via Boston! -Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
