You should jealously guard the honour and reputation of the university and present yourselves as good ambassadors of the University. The Provost of the College, Dr. Sule Musa, who was represented by the Deputy Provost, Dr. Kabir Ahmad Gwarzo, said this matriculation exercise was the third since the college, started

2 to run degree programmes in affiliation with Bayero University, Kano. Dr. Sule Musa thanked the university for the cooperation and support extended to the college which he said contributed a lot towards the successes being recorded by the college in academic activities. Dr. Abdulwahab Lawan Appointed Dean Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello has approved the appointment of Dr. Abdulwahab Lawan, as Dean, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology based on the decision of the 339 th Senate meeting of 17 th February, 2016. According to the Senate s decision signed by the University Examinations Officer, Amina Umar Abdullahi for Registrar, Fatima Binta Mohammed, the appointment is for two years. ANUPA BUK Elects New Executive Officers The Association of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators (ANUPA), Bayero University Chapter has elected new executive officers to steer the affairs of the association for the next two years, even as the Registrar, Hajiya Fatima Binta Mohammed, assumed her automatic position as the president of the chapter. By convention, the office of the chapter president is automatically occupied by the Registrar of the University, as the position is specifically reserved to the office of the Registrar. Addressing the maiden congress of the association, which took place at the University Senate Chamber, on Thursday 28 th April, 2016, the Registrar, Hajiya Fatima Binta Mohammed, said the tenure of the former executives of the association had expired. Hence, a decision was taken to dissolve them with a view to electing new officers. She reminded members that BUK chapter of ANUPA had not been active for a very long time, a development which adversely affected its involvement in the national affairs of the association. The Registrar explained that her mission was to revive the association and make it very active and strong for the benefit of the teeming members. According to her, due to inactive association, members had not been benefitting from the numerous professional training programmes and other conferences, saying it was regrettable that ANUPA, which ought to have been leading other Unions and Associations in the University was now relegated to the background. Hajiya Fatima Mohammed declared that her administration would give all the necessary support with a view to regaining the lost glory of the Association. She also disclosed that the association had about N1.6 million in its account. She pleaded with members to cooperate with the executives with tangible advice and suggestions on how best to govern the affairs of the association. She disclosed that the membership had now increased from just 45 in 2012 to about 140 in 2016, saying that, initially only a handful of members had been paying their monthly dues. However, she said now all the 140 members would have their monthly dues deducted beginning from the month of May. She equally appealed to the new executives to be up and doing, pointing out that any officer who reneged on his responsibilities would be shoved out.

Muslims Urged To Be Brothers Keepers An erudite scholar at Al-Azhar University Egypt, Professor Rabi Muhammad Gom ah, has urged the Muslim Ummah to always be their brothers keepers and tolerate as well as respect individuals religious belief. Professor Rabi Muhammad, who is a senior lecturer at the university, was speaking at a public lecture on peaceful co-existence from the Qur anic perspective, organized by the Centre for Qur anic Studies (CQS), Bayero University Kano. The lecture took place on Thursday, 28 th April, 2016 at Musa Abdullahi Auditorium. He said Islam encouraged peace and tolerance among various religious beliefs, adding that respecting fellow human beings, whether Muslims or not, was tantamount to obeying Allah s command. He said Islam teaches its followers the importance of living in peace, respect for one another and upholding the sanctity of human life. Professor Rabi Muhammad said Islam had instructed its followers to love each other. When Prophet Muhammad (SAW) migrated from Makkah to Madina, the first thing he did after building a Masjid was to encourage a harmonious relationship between the Muslims that came with him from Makkah and those he met at Madina. He also urged Muslims to always exhibit good and exemplary conduct, because, according to him, good conduct remained the fastest way of encouraging non-muslims to accept Islam. In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, who was represented by Professor Abubakar Mustapha of the Department of Islamic Studies and Shariah, described the relationship between Bayero University and Al-Azahar University, Egypt as very cordial with a very old history.

GUIDE TO BETTER GRAMMAR With Sheriff Ahmed Commonly Misused Expressions (5) The rules for speaking or writing a particular language or an analysis of the rules of a particular aspect of language must be respected. In other words, we should come to grips with the spoken or written form of language that somebody uses with regard to accepted standards of correctness. Next week, God willing, we ll discuss another interesting aspect of grammar. Until then, let s discuss the following three grammar points: The surrounding was grassy. Please note that surrounding is an adjective, meaning nearby, adjacent, neighbouring, etc. It is not appropriate in the context above. It is usually used before a noun, as in: a. the surrounding village b. the surrounding area The correct word in the sentence above is surroundings, meaning environs, environment, scenery, etc. It is a plural noun. Study the following correct sentences: c. The Dean commended the workers for keeping the surroundings neat and tidy. d. Make sure you keep the surroundings spick and span (that is, in perfect condition). Usage Note: The adjectives neat and tidy may be used as synonyms, but can be used together as in example (c), just as it is correct to say neat and clean. Which is correct, vicious circle or vicious cycle? Study the following sentences: a. For the long term there was the threat of a vicious cycle by which inadequate revenues would hinder construction, and lack of construction would keep down productivity and hence national revenues. b. The condition of this pivotal agency created a vicious economic circle involving other public entities. c. These and other crises provided further evidence of the vicious cycle in which Syrian politics has been caught up since 1949. The question is: are the two expressions synonyms and, therefore, interchangeable? Well, until quite recently the invariable choice was vicious circle. Perhaps influenced by such phrases as the cycle of welfare dependency, however, the variant vicious cycle has been gaining ground, to the point that it is now seen almost as frequently as vicious circle, in virtually indistinguishable contexts, especially in the United States of America. In British English, however, the only correct expression is vicious circle, as in example (b) above.

66 The couple was married about five weeks ago. The word couple, as used here, is a noun referring to two people sharing lives; two people who are married, are living together, or have an intimate relationship. If this is true, why is the singular verb ( was ) used instead of the plural verb ( were )? Note on Usage: When couple refers to two partners or married people, it may be treated as singular or plural, depending on whether the couple acts as a single unit or as two separate people within the relationship, as in: a. The couple wants to be married before the end of the year. b. The couple have not reconciled, and continue to live apart. However, if a pronoun refers to couple, it is almost always plural (they, them, their), and so the verb should be plural as well, as in: c. The couple have [not has] repeatedly asked that their privacy be respected. In other uses, couple is often followed by of and a plural noun, in which case it is treated as plural, as in: d. A couple of books were on the table. In informal uses the strict sense of two may be expanded to several. The use of couple without of in such contexts (I bought a couple CDs) is increasingly heard but should be avoided in formal writing. In summary, it is correct to say: e. The couple was married about five weeks ago. f. The couple were married about five weeks ago. Send your contributions and observations to: ahmedsheriff22@gmail.com. Health and Safety Tips from Health Services Are you aware that use of mosquitoes coil may adversely constitute a health hazard to you? Mosquito coils are made up of toxic chemical substances. It does not kill mosquitoes but rather driving it away from the environment. It causes allergic reactions especially to people with respiratory tract problem e.g. Asthma. Prolong use can be a predisposing factor to some disease e.g. cancer of the lungs. It can cause fire outbreak if not properly used. Alternatively use insecticide treated mosquito net as more safer. Report any case of respiratory tract infection to Health Services Department for proper diagnosis and treatment. 11 SEMINARS The following Faculties/Departments/Centre invite the University Community to their seminars/workshop, scheduled as follows: Department of Biochemistry: PG Seminar M.Sc. 8 Politics is not a Money Making Venture Prof. Sule Bello at Mambayya Patriotic Nigerians have been called upon to resist the antics of opportunistic politicians, who have turned the noble call to provide leadership into a money making venture, even though it is supposed to be a nation-building effort. Professor Sule Bello, of the Political Science Department of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, made the call while presenting a paper titled Malam Aminu Kano s Politics: A Road Map to Independent Social, Political and Economic Changes in Nigeria. He vehemently condemned those who believe that you do not need any skill to join politics, all you need is to be crafty, cafty and cunning just so you can outwit everybody until the country falls and collapses. The occasion was the 33 rd Anniversary Symposium in honour of the late Malam Aminu Kano, on Sunday 17 th April, 2016, at the Sa adu Zungur Auditorium of the Centre for Democratic Research and Training (AKCDRT) of Bayero University Kano, Mambayya house, at Gwammaja Quarters. He expressed surprise at the way Nigerians take the continued existence of the country for granted, at a time global imperialism is dismembering nations to achieve their national objectives, citing the cases of Somalia, Libya, Syria and others. The Don said since our politicians are ignorant of the qualities possessed by those who waged the anti-colonial struggle, of those who built the federation and of those who set the country on the path of development and all the goodies they now enjoy, now that there is a crisis that is not entirely of our making, they do not have the skills to confront it. He urged present and aspiring leaders to learn and practice the politics of justice and uphold the right of the poor, otherwise the citizens would be justified to join hands and fight such selfish politicians. For his part, Barrister Solomon Dalung, Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, in his paper Consolidating Democracy in Nigeria through the Anti-Corruption Strategy, said democratic consolidation in a corrupt ridden society is unthinkable, instead the values of transparency, accountability, due process, rule of law and constitutionalism must be made the guiding principles before such consolidation would be possible. He also urged Nigerians to support the federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari who is determined to fight corruption root, stem and branches, to enable democracy and the nation to survive. Dr. Patrick Wilmot s short but incisive tribute which was read on his behalf, said Malam Aminu Kano embodies the essence of leadership: to protect the weak, nurture the poor and provide peace and stability to the minds of citizens. He was of the opinion that Mallam s political party, NEPU, was founded on the principle that the poorest of the society, the talakawa, the abandoned and disinherited ones needed the protective cloak of political leadership. He contrasted this with the looters and hypocritical politicians who stash their loot in foreign bank accounts and invest in choice properties at home and abroad. Faculty of Education Holds Orientation for New Students The Faculty of Education has organized orientation for new level one and two students and charged them to abide by the rules and regulations of the University. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Ali Tijjani congratulated the new students for gaining admission into Bayero University one of the best Universities in Nigeria.
