The Apostle s miracles Aug 30, 2015 In part 1 of Jesus deliverance and healings 55 miracles of Jesus were briefly reviewed. Miracles were common place in Jesus ministry throughout the 4 gospels. The miracles were as simple as curing a fever to raising Lazarus from the dead after 4 days in the tomb. Jesus selected 12 uneducated men (Acts4:13) and trained them but there were others outside of Jesus basic ministry school that believed and began to put that belief into action by casting out demons (Mk9:38-40) and more than likely also healing the sick. This man was preaching the gospel correctly according to Jesus. The 7 sons of Sceva who were exorcists tried to use the name of Jesus and the demonized man attacked them, overpowered them, wounded them and stripped them. The demons showed the exorcists who had the correct power and authority to cast out demons and to heal. Acts 19:13-16 Demonized - Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. But the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, mastered all of them, and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. One has to look in the gospels to view the beginning of the Apostles miracles. First they performed basic ministry duties such as baptizing people (Jn4:1-2) then they were told to go preach that men should repent. Mk6:12. Jesus then gave them authority to heal and expel demons. Peter sinking in the water (Mt 14:29-31) after he was successfully walking on the water shows that miracles can be shut down when fear and doubt enter your mind. Peter needed to replace the tearful atmosphere in Acts 9:39-40 in order to raise Tabitha from the dead Apostle s Miracles in the Gospels 1 Jn 3:22 Jn 4:1-2 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized. NOW WHEN the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 2 Mk 9:38-40 Demonized - "Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he was not following us." Jesus said, "Do not forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is for us. 3 Mk 6:7,12-13 Demonized - [Jesus] called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them. 4 Lk 10:1,9,17 Demonized - AFTER THIS the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come. heal the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" 5 Mt 14:29-31 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" [Jm1:6-7 doubting = doubleminded, unstable, won t receive anything from the Lord] 1

The miracles of the Apostles outside the 4 gospels are located in the book of Acts. Outside of Acts from Romans to Jude the focus is not on signs, wonders and miracles but description of the enemy forces, its weak points and how to overcome them. That layout will follow in another writing. Raising the dead 6 Acts 9:39-40 Peter put out all weeping widows, knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said, Tabitha, rise, she sat up. 7 Acts14:19-20 Paul stoned in Lystra, the disciples gathered about him, he rose up 8 Acts 20:9-12 Eutychus fell asleep and fell out of the window while listening to Paul. Paul went down and bent over him and embracing him, they took the lad away alive Diseases cured 10 Act 3:2,6,7 Acts 4:4 Man lame from birth, Peter: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk took him by right hand and raised him up. - Acts4:4 5,000 men believed 11 Acts 9:17 Ananias: laying his hands on him, Brother Saul..regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit 12 Acts 9:33-35 Aeneas bedridden for 8 years. Peter: Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed. all residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord 13 Acts 14:8-10 Paul in Lystra, a crippled man from birth. Paul, looking intently at him and seeing he had faith to be made well. Said in a loud voice, Stand on your feet 14 Acts 28:3,5 Viper fastened on Paul s hand, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm 15 Acts 28:8 on Island of Malta, Father of Publius lay sick with fever and dysentery Paul: visited him and prayed and putting his hands on him healed him 16 Acts 28:9 the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and they were cured One of the most impressive demon casting stories of the bible which stood out to me centers on the Apostle Philip. Philip arrives in a town and begins preaching about Jesus. The town folks listened to what he said but were blown away by the miracles that were being worked thru him. Watching a deliverance happen where Unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed, crying with a loud voice would be startling and you had many who were paralyzed or lame were healed definitely out of the ordinary. Simon Magus, the magician, was also converted. Simon Magus did mighty works with his demonic magical power and he amazed the nation of Samaria. Simon followed Philip and Simon himself was amazed at the miracles being done by Philip. It s awesome to imagine the multitude of miracles that Philip did to amaze a high level sorcerer. Call it a repeat of Moses battle with Egyptian magicians. Demons cast out 17 Acts 5:15-16 Demonized - Shadow of Peter healed sick. Sick..afflicted with unclean spirits healed 18 Acts 8:6-8 Demonized - Philip in city of Samaria, Multitudes gave heed when they heard and saw the signs: unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed, crying with a loud voice; and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. much joy in city 19 Acts 16:16-18 Demonized - slave girl who had a spirit of divination, proclaimed: These men are servants of the Most Hight God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation, Paul: I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her, it came out. 20 Acts19:11-12 Demonized - God did extradordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, handerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them 2

One miracle that Jesus didn t do while he was preaching was to escape from jail. [Jesus did escape death (Acts2:24)] The Apostles escaped prison (Acts5:18-19), Peter escaped prison (Acts12:3-10) and Paul was loosed from prison (Acts16:25-26). Jail break 21 Acts 5:18-19 arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison, at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out 22 Acts 12:3-10 arrested Peter, put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church, angel of the Lord appeared, chains fell off. Angel: Get up..follow me, went past 1 st & 2 nd guard and iron gate to city. 23 Acts16:25-26 Paul & Silas in prison, fastened their feet in the stocks, midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, suddenly there was a great earthquake, all the doors were opened and everyone s fetters were unfastened Death and curses 24 Acts 5:4,5,10 Ananias & Sapphira: sold a piece of property, held back some of proceeds, laid it at apostles feet Peter: You have not lied to men but to God both fell down and died 25 Acts13:10-11 Paul to Elymas: the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind and unable to see the sun for a time Flying thru air 26 Acts 8:39-40 the Spirit of the Lord caught up Philip, Phillip was found at Azotus The Apostles did all the miracles that Jesus did. Jesus was stated in Acts2:22 that He did mighty works and wonders and signs. Paul did signs and wonders and mighty works and extraordinary miracles and Philip did signs and great miracles. Peter s mere shadow healed people. Signs and wonders and mighty works Acts 5:15-16 they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. 27 Acts 8:13 Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. 28 Acts 15:12 Paul and Barnabas: what signs and wonders God had done through them Acts19:11-12 God did extradordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, handerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them 29 2Cor 12:12 Paul: signs of a true apostle, signs and wonders and mighty works Acts 2:22 Hebrews 2:4 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his own will. Looking at the above miracles by the Apostles should cause you to be inspired by the definition of believer s demonstration of belief/faith in Mk16:17-18 of the power and authority that Jesus has given to those who believe. Mark 16:17-18 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 3

18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover." John 14:12 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. Paul mentions that there are 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit: 1 Corinthians 12:7-10 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. So why aren t these 9 gifts happening in churches across the land these days? A plausible hint came to me from a deliverance ministry message. In the message they believed that a lack of revival in the US were a result of dry baptisms. They defined dry baptism as a lack of tears and weeping once the baptism was completed by the one being baptized. They may be repentant, believers and are baptized but in Acts 2:38 it just mentions gift of the Holy Spirit not gifts. The 10 th gift of the Holy Spirit is the seal of salvation. Church members are getting the most important gift of the Holy Spirit, salvation, but not any other gifts. RSV Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. RSV Ephesians 1:13-14 13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 which is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. The manifestation of the Spirit are for the common good (1Cor12:7) however if you don t have selfcontrol then the Holy Spirit could be used for evil purpose if given to a person without self-control. James and John wanted to burn down a Samaritan village but Jesus rebuked them James and John didn t have full control of their mind, body & emotions. If all Christians received this fire from heaven gift at baptism then there would be few people left on earth because a slightest rebuke from someone not sharing the same views would have fire descending down on top of them. Luke 9:54-55 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them?" 55 But he turned and rebuked them. I believe when you are fully mature in controlling your body & mind then you can eat the meat of the gospel and receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. You may not get the gifts you want but the gifts that God wants you to have for a specific purpose. 4

Jesus was fully trained when He was baptized He received the full measure of the Holy Spirit. Jesus went into battle with Satan for 40 days and Jesus was successfully in turning away all temptations (Heb4:15) that Satan placed before him. Jesus then went on a continuous non-stop 3.5 year ministry. We need that power and authority but first we need to be ready to receive them. I believe that it all comes down to fruit of the Holy Spirit. The fruits are Eph5:4 and Gal5:22-23. Once a person has been baptized then they are justified in God s eyes. They then must begin to sanctify/purify all areas of their life (ie what they think/do/speak/watch/purchase.) and bring it under God s will and desire so that these fruits will be evident in their lives. Ephesians 5:9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), Galatians 5:22-24 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. The bible mentioned 5 different ways that believers received the gifts of the Holy Spirit after baptism. They are: 1) Laying on of hands of the Apostles, 2) Laying on of hands of the elders, 3) thru preaching/fellowship, 4) by praying for a gift aligned with God s will & desire and 5) when Jesus directs you to do a job he will give you the equipment to complete the task. Imparting the Holy Spirit by hands of the Apostles a Acts 8:15-17 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; 16 for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. b Acts 19:5-6 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus and when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. c Rm 1:11 Paul wanted to go to Rome: I may impart some spiritual gift Imparting the Holy Spirit by hands of the Elders d 1Tim 4:13-14 attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Imparting the Holy Spirit by preaching/fellowship e Acts 10:43-48 To him all the prophets bear witness that every one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." While Peter was still saying this, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, "Can any one forbid water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. f Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. there appeared to them, cloven tongues as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5

Imparting the Holy Spirit by praying for the gifts g Acts 4:29-31 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant to thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Imparting the Holy Spirit by Jesus for a task to be done h Jn 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. i Lk 9:10 AND HE called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, j Lk 10:1,17 :1 AFTER THIS the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come. :17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" If your belief and faith in healing and deliverance hasn t been strengthen after reading all the miracles which Jesus and the Apostles did; then how will you have the confidence of asking Jesus to heal your simple cold let alone cancer? You must believe Jesus will heal your fever first before you can ever believe He ll heal your cancer.
