Clergy COLUMN Fr. Michael Pallad Working Together Watching parishioners prepare for our annual festival is a good thing. Is there some stress? Yes. Disagreement? At times. Does it take a physical toll? On everybody. Then, why is it a good thing to watch? Because it s life, community, caring and love in action. It s watching one big family being a family. Our festival is our largest event, which means we have more hands helping at one time, more ideas being exchanged, and more opinions being espoused than at any other time of the year. And we all know what that means 10 people, 15 opinions; 20 people, 35 opinions, etc. But how does something like this work each year? This, by the way, is Greek Festival #32 (Yes, 32!) and our 9th at this location. If it were all arguments and disagreements, we would ve stopped long ago. It works because under all the stress and exhaustion is the one reason we all work so hard, and the one thing that keeps us all together: Love; of Christ, His Church and of one another. Really, there is no other power on earth that comes close. Without love, a simple disagreement would linger and fester and turn people away. Without remembering why we work together, we would soon walk away asking why we bother. Without recognizing that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, doing our best in different ways and with different tasks, it would be so easy to say it s just not worth it! But that s not how a loving family in Christ works. And working together for our festival provides a great opportunity for us to learn that lesson, again and again. We marvel each year, how it all finally comes together, especially during the stressful final few weeks. And yet, following a prayer service asking the Lord s blessings, we open the front gates on Friday afternoon each year, and welcome our neighbors for another weekend of delicious food and entertainment. Fortunately, Great Lent begins soon after, this year on Monday, Mar. 11. The opportunity of forgiveness is provided on the evening before, because the way Lent begins in the Orthodox Church is with the Vespers of Forgiveness. We all need to take this time to come together, especially if any hard feelings linger from working so hard together, and ask to be forgiven for things we may have said or done. This, also, is how a loving family in Christ works. And it is a good thing to watch. We marvel each year, how it all finally comes together, especially during the stressful final few weeks. Thank You Dear Ones of St. Haralambos parish, thank you so much for your generous gift presentation last month. Your patience and support of our Church Beautification Project has been so wonderful. I feel so blessed to have received your prayers along the way in addition to your tangible support. With this gift, I will be able to request time off from work at strategic times to get the work done faster. Best of all, this will allow me to visit a monastery or two for a short retreat and spiritual refreshment. The lovely plaque will be returned to the Church soon - if it stays in my studio for very long chances are it ll get paint on it. Sincerely, your sister in Christ, Kay Page 4 St. Haralambos
