...whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant... Gospel Reading: Mark 10:35-45 (shorter form Mark 10:42-45) Jesus teaches that those who wish to be great must be the servant of all. Background on the Gospel Reading In this Sunday s Gospel, we continue to read from the section of Mark s Gospel that reports Jesus journey to Jerusalem. Last Sunday we heard Jesus lament the particular challenges those with many possessions face in order to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus then predicts his passion to the Twelve, who are amazed and afraid. In this part of Mark s Gospel, Jesus words to his closest disciples seem to be intended to prepare them for the events that will occur in Jerusalem. In today s Gospel, James and John ask to be given seats of honor when Jesus enters into his glory. Once again, the disciples seem to be selective in what they hear Jesus say. They want to share Jesus glory, but do not appear to understand that his glory will be preceded by his suffering. Jesus notes their lack of understanding and predicts the suffering they will endure for the sake of the Gospel. Jesus says that the honor they seek is not his to give. When the other ten hear what James and John have asked, Mark reports that they are indignant. Jesus takes the opportunity to teach them. Jesus explains the importance of service and sacrifice in the life of a disciple. In particular, he seems to be preparing the Twelve for their leadership roles in the emerging Christian community. Echoing the Gospel we heard several weeks ago (on the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Mark 9:33-37), Jesus acknowledges that his teaching is countercultural. In today s Gospel, Jesus contrasts the dynamics within the community of disciples with those shown by the rulers of the Gentiles. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Most Holy Redeemer Church was created in 1998 with the merging of Holy Rosary Church (1917) and St. John s Church (1915), both of Hadley. As the one Roman Catholic Church in the Town of Hadley, Massachusetts, our Mission is: To be a welcoming place of worship for all. To proclaim the word of God and celebrate the sacraments. To attend to our ongoing formation in Christian living and support one another in spiritual growth. To dedicate our service to God. To recognize and support our responsibility for God s people, for spiritual and corporal works of mercy to the larger community, area and world. To celebrate our belief in the message and teachings of Jesus Christ and the Roman Catholic Church and demonstrate our appreciation for the many gifts we have received. If we respond well to God s calling to each of us, we can restore greater peace and holiness in our society. This Holy Hour will be the first of a monthly series around our local deanery. What s Happening at Most Holy Redeemer Do you like to plan parties and social events? Are you looking for more meaningful spiritual opportunities and liturgies or ways to learn more about our faith? Do you have ideas and interest in family focused programs and activities? Would you like to work toward improving communication within the parish and to the community? You can help make new things happen or to improve on what we are doing as a parish by participating in one of our Pastoral Council Commissions: Hospitality; Spiritual Life; Faith Development; Family Life; Communications. These commissions are sub -committees of the Pastoral Council. To see how you can contribute, pick up a copy of the Pastoral Council Commissions Information sheet in the vestibules of the church. An explanation of each commission is provided. Each consists of a small group, meets on its own schedule, as needed, and has one member serve on the Pastoral Council. As previously noted in the Bulletin, we are in the process of forming these commissions. Consider joining one, so that, by using your interests and God-given gifts and talents, you can have input into how Most Holy Redeemer meets the needs of our parish family.
