SENTENCE God has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and given us the ministry of reconciliation. COLLECT God of compassion, you are slow to anger, and full of mercy, welcoming sinners who return to you with penitent hearts: receive in you loving embrace all who come home to you, and seat them at your bountiful table, that, with all your children, they may feast with delight on all that satisfies the hungry heart. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST Reading Joshua 5.2-12 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites a second time. So Joshua made flint knives, and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath-haaraloth. This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the warriors, had died during the journey through the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt. And so that place is called Gilgal to this day. While the Israelites were encamped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Luke 2.33-35 The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. And the child Jesus father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. SUNDAY NOTICES Annual General Meeting Our Annual General Meeting took place last Sunday. We thank all of those who offered themselves for positions of leadership in the parish. In 2016, the Parish Churchwardens are Brenda Hunter (Rector s Warden), Peter Hanson and Anthony Miller (People s Wardens); the Parish Councillors are Elizabeth Comino, Colin Knowles, Brian Luhr, Jeremy Parkinson, David Russell, Colin Tso; and Lucy Clothier and Greg Loveday (Rector s appointees). The Parish Representatives (Nominators) are Elizabeth Comino, Peter Hanson, Brenda Hunter, Brian Luhr and Anthony Miller. At the beginning of Solemn High Mass this Sunday, the parish s leaders for the year ahead will be formally commissioned. Please continue to pray for those who are serving the parish in these positions for the year ahead. Pastoral Care Group The provision of pastoral care is a long standing tradition of ministry here at Christ Church St Laurence. We are pleased to announce the formation of a pastoral care group, which under the leadership of Fr John will seek to broaden the number of the people visited and increase the frequency of visits. The existence of this group will not reduce the pastoral visiting by our clergy. Sonya Gillies has kindly accepted an invitation to coordinate our group and she is currently coordinating the 6 Railway Square, Sydney initial visits of the group. The team of pastoral cares will continue to grow. Please speak to Fr John if you would like more information. St Laurence Music Inc In 2016, SLM Inc continues to be actively involved in providing the funds for the post of Organ Scholar and five Choral Scholarships at CCSL. Funds are also being allocated to support the forthcoming Lenten Concert. 2016 Holy Week Preacher We are delighted to announce that The Revd Dr James Walters will be this year s Holy Week Preacher. Fr James is Chaplain to the London School of Economics, where he is a senior lecturer and a member of the advisory board to the LSE Programme for the Study of Religion and Non-Religion. Before taking up his post at the LSE, Fr James was a parish priest in North London and prior to ordination he worked for a Member of Parliament. He has a doctorate from Cambridge University in systematic theology and philosophy of religion and he is the author of Baudrillard and Theology (Continuum 2012). Fr James writes and teaches in the areas of theology, philosophy, politics and economics. Fr James is visiting Australia in 2016 as the Murdoch University International Theologian.
