PAGE 2 MARCH 3, 2019 SACRAMENTS Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Baptism: All arrangements, including confirmation of the date, must be made with the parish office. Sponsors must provide proof of eligibility by a letter from their respective pastors, must have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. Sponsors, if married, must either be married in the Church or with the Church s permission. Parents must attend Baptismal Preparation, which is regularly scheduled throughout the year. Marriage: Arrangements must be made directly with the pastor at least 6 months before the date of the wedding. Marriage preparation is required and couples are asked to speak to the priest first before setting a date. Couples, rather than parents, should contact the priest. If either party was previously married, an annulment must be granted prior to the selection of a future wedding date. Virtus, Protecting God s Children Session St. Barbara Church, 111 Raymaley Rd., Harrison City will be facilitating a Virtus, Protecting God s Children session on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 6:30 pm. You may register for this session by calling 724-744-7474. Gospel ~ Luke 6:39-45 ~ Jesus told his disciples a parable, Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye, when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother s eye. A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. Reflection T here s an old Latin dictum, operatio sequitur esse, which means that things act according to their nature. Jesus explains just that in this Gospel passage. The blind are those who need to be guided, a student is one who needs a teacher, and good trees bear good fruit. A disciple of Christ has a definite nature too, and our actions are the test of that discipleship. The nature of discipleship is something that we can come to ignore by familiarity. As disciples, we can become so accustomed to the Gospel message that we forget that the defining trait of the Christian is the willingness to be taught and led by Christ. When we refuse to be taught, we re blinding ourselves to the very nature of our calling as disciples. That s what Jesus means by hypocrite ; he applies it to those who are blind to their own faults and need to be guided. A disciple is one who follows and is taught by Christ, one who will bear good fruit and be fit to teach others. Augustine Institute 2012/ 2015 OPEN YOUR HEART TO HOPE DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL Open your heart to HOPE, the 2019 Diocesan Lenten Appeal, helps parishes build HOPE. The DLA supports renovations and repairs in the parishes. Go to dioceseofgreensburg.org/hope for a video of Father William McGuirk, pastor of Holy Cross Parish, Youngwood, explaining how the parish received $40,000 from the DLA last year. They used it to renovate the social hall and remodel its kitchen, making it a more pleasant gathering space for the parish community. To make an online DLA donation to your parish visit dioceseofgreensburg.org/hope.
