MAMBALAM TIMES The Neighbourhood Newspaper for T. Nagar & Mambalam www.mambalamtimes.in CMYK Vol. 19, No. 7 By Our Staff Reporter Tenders for the proposed multi-level parking facility on Bashyam Road, T. Nagar, adjacent to Panagal Park, will be floated in a couple of weeks. 943rd Issue : July 13-19, 2013 Tenders to be floated for multi-level parking facility The Rs. 25-crore facility will be tendered on a 30-year design, build, operate and transfer basis. The parking facility will On the night of July 6, burglars broke into three houses (two of them in adjacent apartments) on Arya Gowda Road (West Mambalam), but had to return empty handed from two have six to seven levels and will be able to accommodate around 510 4- wheelers and 918 2-wheelers. It will be fitted with CC TV cameras and electronic ticketing counters. The proposed parking fee for 4-wheelers is Rs. 30 per hour and for 2-wheelers Rs. 7 per hour. Burglars break into 3 houses on same night of them as the flats were vacant. According to the police, they broke into the flat belonging to Mani (a railway employee) in an apartment on Arya Gowda Road (West Mambalam) and found it to be vacant. They next broke into a 2 nd floor flat in the adjacent apartment and found it too to be vacant. In their third successive attempt, they broke into the flat belonging to Lakshmi Narayanan (a retired bank employee) on the first floor. The neighbours, on seeing the lock broken in the morning, called to police. They informed the police that Narayanan was away in the US with his wife. The police suspect loss of valuables and cash as they found an almirah in the house open. The value can only be ascertained after the return of Narayanan, they said. That same night, Rs. 5,000 in cash was burgled from the office of a local weekly newspaper on Srinivasa Pillai Street. Police suspect the involvement of the same gang in all the four cases. According to an investigating officer, it appears to be the handiwork of habitual offenders, who had prior information about the locked houses. He added that most apartment complexes have not installed closed circuit television cameras despite being advised to do so. The cases are under investigation in Mambalam Police Station. FREE

Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES July 13-19, 2013 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 60 Sachi worked with Dungan in his historic maiden movie Sathi Leelavathi (1936) produced by the Coimbatore-based producer A. N. Maruthachalam Chettiar. Chettiar had already produced the box-office bonanza Bhama Vijayam (1934), directed by Manik Lal Tandon, in which G. N. Balasubramaniam (GNB), the Carnatic music legend that still lives undiminished long after his demise, took his bow in movies as Sage Narada. Dungan s Sathi Leelavathi created history and many new talents made waves and forged ahead to conquer peaks of fame and fortune. The roster included the Gemini movie mogul S. S. Vasan as story-writer, and latter-day stars M. K. Radha (of Chandralekha fame!), T. S. Balaiah, and the last but not the least M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), the man of destiny, deified leader of Tamils, cult figure and all! Rajam played Lord Krishna in Radha Kalyanam while Radha was played by M. R. Santhanalakshmi, the noted star of yesteryears. A married Brahmin woman from the temple town Kumbakonam, she had entered the Tamil theater and made a mark with her good looks, bountiful buxom figure and singing talents and skills. Saachi, a keen talent scout, brought her into movies in this film. Santhanalakshmi was much older to Rajam and, not surprisingly, he felt embarrassed in doing romantic sequences with her! And according to Ellis R. Dungan, she was quite aggressive in enacting such scenes and invested them with much igniting impact-rich realism! (Ellis R. Dungan, a close pal of this writer, also directed her in the movie Ambikapathi with MKT. Dungan passed away some years ago at the age of 93 in Wheeling, West Virginia, USA. This writer is now at work on a book on him. Ambikapathi made Santhanalakshmi a star and she enjoyed a long and successful innings. A song by her in this film Aaathi Paranjyothi ennai. (based on a hit Hindi film tune) became very popular and old-timers still recall this song with joy. Radha Kalyanam did not do well commercially and few remember this movie today. Then came Rukmini Kalyanam (1936) and Rajam played Lord Krishna again in this movie. The famous Marathi filmmaker, actor, and later Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner, Balji Phendarkar directed it. He was the brother of Baburao (who had directed Seetha Kalyanam ). He was very fond of icecream and, according to Rajam, he used to take chunks of it for breakfast! This film too did not do well. By now Rajam had got married and, as his wife was not in favor of his acting in movies, it was goodbye to cinema, romantic scenes with elderly heroines and all that.! But later, in 1948, Rajam worked as the music composer (with no credit) and also sang a song offscreen Kaathal puyal thanile thurumbu pol in V. Shantaram s Nam Naadu. The celebrated Indian filmmaker had made a Hindi film Apna Desh and he dubbed it in Tamil. He released the Hindi version in Andhra with songs in Telugu! M. L. Vasanthakumari sang offscreen for the heroine Pushpa Hans in the Tamil version. (This writer found in his modest archives a magazine interview with Rajam by Kalki (Ra. Krishnamurthy), the icon of modern Tamil literature. It appeared in Ananda Vikatan of the 1930s when Kalki was its Associate Editor. Here are some extracts translated from the Tamil original: Kalki: Can you tell us something about how to improve Tamil Cinema? Master Rajam: Beshaaa! Acting is important and equally important is the delivery of dialogues. However, in Tamil cinema, nobody really bothers about it! Much of it is written only a few days before the shooting and what does it prove? Kalki: Dialogue is not that important for a film! Rajam: More or less you are right! Dialogue writers should know something about cinema and acting. However, here it is not so! They write long sentences in high-flown language while nobody talks like that in real life! Therefore, you cannot act in a realistic manner. It s all stagey and stilted. Artificial! They don t take any care about minor roles In a film all roles, big and small, are important. Kalki : Were all these things followed in your films? Rajam: I don t think so! Otherwise, they would have been better! Kalki: What do you think of directors not knowing Tamil directing such films? Rajam: Let s take my recent film Rukmini Kalyanam. The director did not know Tamil, but in a way it helped us! He (Balji Phendarkar) was also the writer. His dialogues were translated and we spoke them. If we made any mistake, he would spot it at once! He was also a fine actor. And he was very brilliant... Of course all directors are not so! (Obviously Tamil cinema has not changed much since the 1930s!) (To be continued) Garden around NSK statue under renovation The roadside garden housing the statue of N. S. Krishnan on G. N. Chetty Road is being renovated. Chennai Corporation workers removed an overgrowth of bushes and fixed a Street flooded by bore well work A resident of Patel Street (West Mambalam) let out water and slush, pumping them out onto the street, while drilling a bore well within the fence along its boundary. An official said that granite tiles will cover the outer portion of the island and saplings will be planted in the inner portion. compound of his house, thereby flooding the street and creating a nuisance to road users. Pedestrians and motorists avoided the lane as its surface had become slippery. Madhumita s arangetram tomorrow R. Madhumita (a resident of 23/53, 48 th Street, Ashok Nagar) will have her Bharathanatyam arangetram on Sunday, July 14, at 6 p.m in Mahaswami Hall (Vani Mahal, G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar). A. SADANAND SUICIDE SQUAD Compared to the bottomless mighty oceans in which our poor pieces of earth float with their crowd of human animal and other baggage whom the great Creator had condemned to be despoilers of all that is loaded in the biblical ark for the good or bad of man, the stupid rivers that discharge the scum and shit of the millions of the people and animals sometimes grumble at the antics of man who imagine that their favourite gods and their cohorts would be gambolling on the banks of the Himalayan rivers. For them the sight is next to the final mystery of what heaven holds in store for them after their sojourn in mother India. Armed with ignorance and the deadly faith that God will spare the holy pilgrims, these God-trekkers in millions climb and descend the Himalayas where the human pathway was scrambled up hundreds of years ago.thousands of the pilgrims must have perished in the past either in the slush or floods or through diseases acquired through quirks of nature but not reported in the media for fear of antagonising our good old Gods and Goddesses. This new Godly season, the Himalayan game turned out to be a mock Olympiad and lakhs of dumb driven cattle and the sponsoring States caused the disappearance of thousands in floods, diseases, tsunamis and during rescue operations. The Gods are having a whale of a season at the pettiness of man for imagining that a painful trek is the antidote for all the past sins. What would you suggest to the sissy government? BAN these yatras! Why? They are stupid. I heard one God tell another that the human beings are crazy and, though we Gods have created them, they will destroy themselves without our help. Shiva the destroyer is closing shop. Poor chap needs rest. Daasya members bathe cows of goshala Members of Daasya (12 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar), an NGO, and volunteers bathed the cows and cleaned the goshala in Athur Village (Chengalpet District) belonging to Sri Chaturvedha Vidhya Ganapathi Vedhashram (26/8, Ramachandra Street, T. Nagar) on July 7. P. Raman (President, Daasya) told Mambalam Times that after the sanitation work, they performed gho pooja. They also donated provisions to the Vedhashram. B. Vaidyanathan (Trustee, Vedhashram) said that the Veda patasala was started a year ago and at present there are six students. Apart from Vedic education, they also learn English, Tamil, Sanskrit and mathematics. Students are provided free boarding and lodging. Those who are willing to make donations may call 2814 3451 or 98844 02624. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Playground misused as godown by contractor Sir, The Corporation playground in our area is in a bad condition. The playground was temporarily given to a Corporation contractor 5 years ago for storing his materials in connection with some sewage work he was carrying out. How a community playground could be given away in the first place in itself is a mystery. The contractor completely damaged and vandalized the playground during the period of his use. Our Resident Association has been fighting for its restoration ever since with little effect. The residents even staged a dharna in front of the Corporation office some months ago. The contractor is dragging his feet and the restoration is moving at a snail s pace. I request the Corporation officials to take action against the contractor and restore the playground so that it can be put to use for residents benefit. T.
