Archbishop Speaks... THE UNIVERSAL FAMILY PRAYER (THE PURPOSE AND RELEVANCE OF THE APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER) Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ! As we step into the month of October, in continuation of our reflection on Family Prayer, I wish to insist on an important mission that our Holy Father has entrusted to us, as Apostles of Prayer. I am sure that you must have come across two universal prayer intentions (General Intention and/or Mission Intention) of the Holy Father printed for every month in our bible diaries, newsletters (including Niraivazhvu) and many other spiritual magazines often under the title Pope s intentions. These universal intentions are recommended by none other than the Holy Father himself as part of the Apostleship of Prayer, inviting us to pray with him for the Church. This movement began in 1844 in a small Jesuit seminary at Vals, South France. The seminarians were suggested a way of being apostles and missionaries in their daily lives, uniting with Christ everything that they were doing during the day. In 1896, Pope Leo XIII adopted this prayer ministry as a pontifical work began to recommend a monthly intention for prayer, which expressed a concern of his for which he asked the prayers of all Catholics. From 1928 onwards a second intention for prayer was added. This Apostolate of Prayer spread among the lay people as well and has now become a worldwide ministry. The Apostleship of Prayer, entrusted to the Society of Jesus, receives two intentions for prayer from the Pope each month, and is responsible for spreading them all over the catholic world. In 2018, only one intention is offered per month, whether universal or related to evangelization. From time to time, however, the Holy Father may add a second prayer intention related to current events or urgent needs, like disaster relief. The second prayer request will help mobilize prayer and action related to the urgent situation. These universal and missionary intentions enable us to realize the universality of the Church, growing in a sense of togetherness and belonging to one Catholic and Apostolic Church. This is a unique way û\yôrü 1 of broadening the horizons of our faithful to universal dimensions of their discipleship and contributing to the Church s mission through their prayer. Through this apostleship, lay people are invited to become collaborators in Christ s mission, living in fidelity to the gospel and offering their work, sufferings and prayer for the Church. The Apostleship of Prayer is a concrete way of becoming missionaries of prayer within our own life calling. I know that in many families of the Archdiocese, these universal prayer intentions recommended by the Holy Father every month are remembered in a special way during the family prayers. I wish to recommend this strongly as this is a concrete way of participating in the Church s life and mission. The Church is a family made of different continents, countries, cultures and people all in prayer. As members of this family, the apostleship of prayer becomes a universal family prayer, including each of our families. It is also an opportunity for us to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, who is the head of this family. For example, this month of October, the Holy Father has entrusted to us an evangelical intention. He invites us to pray for Young People in Africa, that they may have access to education and work in their own countries. How do we pray the universal family prayer? Pope Francis speaks of concrete gestures. He invites us to put our hands and feet to prayer. Through his intentions, the Holy Father calls the world to action, to pray every day and live out our prayers in concrete gestures of mercy and justice. As the Holy Father says, We pray together and we put action to our prayers. We give sense and purpose to our days. The intentions of each month are keys to live our faith in daily life, joining action to our prayers and they present to us a challenge that gives purpose to the month. As members of the Catholic family, we pray with the universal church, in union with the Holy Father and we pray in words and actions! May the Blessed Mother who stood by the apostles on the Pentecost, praying with them and praying for them also intercede for us all. With prayerful wishes, + Most Rev Dr George Antonysamy Archbishop of Madras - Mylapore û\yôrü 2

Do not be deaf or silent in the face of suffering. The cross of Jesus teaches us that in life there is failure and there is victory, it teaches us not to fear the dark times which can be illuminated by the cross, which is a sign of God s victory over evil. Blessed Anna Kolesárová numbered among the virgin martyr: Blessed Anna Kolesárová (14 July 1928 22 November 1944) was a Slovak Roman Catholic. Her life was cut short in 1944 when a Soviet Communist soldier killed her after she refused his sexual advances towards her. Those who knew her best described her as being a modest and simple girl who attended Mass each morning and assumed care of the household following her mother s death in her late childhood. Her beatification process opened in 2004 and she became titled as a Servant of God upon the cause s launch. The process culminated on 6 March 2018 after Pope Francis confirmed that she had died in defensum castitatis (meaning to preserve herself as a virgin) and had confirmed her beatification. Blessed Anna Kolesárová was beatified on 1 st September 2018, before 30 of thousand people gathered in the soccer stadium in Košice, Slovakia, by the new Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Becciu. 2. New evidence by the United Nations shows that the number of the hungry people worldwide has grown for the third consecutive year, reaching 821 million people or one in every nine person hungry in 2017, putting to risk the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by 2030. 3. Synod of Bishops: Less than a month from the beginning of the Synod of Bishops dedicated to young people, Pope Francis has published an Apostolic Constitution, Episcopalis communio, on the structure of the Synod, which was instituted by Pope Paul VI in 1965. Pope Francis says, one in which the Church is led to a new evangelizing stage towards a permanent state of mission, the Synod of Bishops is called to become an even greater channel for the evangelization of today s world. Pope Francis expresses his hope that the Synod might, in its own way contribute to the restoration, of unity among all Christians, in accordance with the will of the Lord. By doing so, it can help the Church find a way of exercising the [papal] primacy which, while in no way renouncing what is essential to its mission, is nonetheless open to a new situation, as Pope St John Paul said in Ut unum sint. û\yôrü 10

The Pontiff also recognizes full communion to the last Chinese bishops ordained without pontifical mandate, with the obvious intent of assuring the normal unfolding of daily life in many Catholic communities, as confirmed by the simultaneous provision which establishes, north of the capital, a new diocese, the first in over 70 years. 10. Persevere, be merciful and hope: Pope Francis, during an encounter with Priests and Religious in Kaunas Cathedral on 23 rd September 2018, tells them they are children of Martyrs. He also urges them to be merciful and to hold fast to Jesus amid tribulation. As men and women of special consecration, he added, we can never afford to lose that inward groaning, that restlessness of heart that finds its rest in the Lord alone. Pope Francis again speaking off the cuff, told those present they were not officials; their calling was to be close to their flock and to be merciful to them, especially in the confessional. The Pope remarked on the tendency for religious and priests to be sad at times and continually tired. This sadness, the Holy Father said, was due to the fact that they were not in love with God. He then advised those present, if that was the case, to find and speak to a wise priest or nun who had that love for the Father. All of us, are on the boat of the Church, Pope Francis said, We too want constantly to cry out to God, to persevere amid tribulation and to hold fast to Jesus Christ as the object of our hope. The challenge that impels us, he continued, is the mandate to evangelize. This is the basis of our hope and our joy. 11. Toge ogether with young people, let t us bring the Gospel to all Dear young people, I would like to reflect with you on the mission that we have received from Christ. In speaking to you, I also address all Christians who live out in the Church the adventure of their life as children of God. What leads me to speak to everyone through this conversation with you is the certainty that the Christian faith remains ever young when it is open to the mission that Christ entrusts to us. Mission revitalizes faith (Redemptoris Missio, 2), in the words of Saint John Paul II, a Pope who showed such great love and concern for young people. The Synod to be held in Rome this coming October, the month of the missions, offers us an opportunity to understand more fully, in the light of faith, what the Lord Jesus wants to say to you young people, and, through you, to all Christian communities. Life is a mission MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR WORLD MISSION DAY 2018 Every man and woman is a mission; that is the reason for our life on this earth. To be attracted and to be sent are two movements that our hearts, especially when we are young, feel as interior forces of love; they hold out promise for our future and they give direction to our lives. More than anyone else, young people feel the power of life breaking in upon us and attracting us. To live out joyfully our responsibility for the world is a great challenge. I am well aware of lights and shadows of youth; when I think back to my youth and my family, I remember the strength of my hope for a better future. The fact that we are not in this world by our own choice makes us sense that there is an initiative that precedes us and makes us exist. Each one of us is called to reflect on this fact: I am a mission on this Earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world (Evangelii Gaudium, 273). We proclaim Jesus Christ The Church, by proclaiming what she freely received (cf. Mt 10:8; Acts 3:6), can share with you young people the way and truth which give meaning to our life on this earth. Jesus Christ, who died and rose for us, appeals to our freedom and challenges us to seek, discover and proclaim this message of truth and fulfilment. Dear young people, do not be afraid of Christ and his Church! For there we find the treasure that fills life with joy. I can tell you this from my own experience: thanks to faith, I found the sure foundation of my dreams and the strength to realize them. I have seen great suffering and poverty mar the faces of so many of our brothers and sisters. And yet, for those who stand by û\yôrü 13 Jesus, evil is an incentive to ever greater love. Many men and women, and many young people, have generously sacrificed themselves, even at times to martyrdom, out of love for the Gospel and service to their brothers and sisters. From the cross of Jesus we learn the divine logic of self-sacrifice (cf. 1 Cor 1:17-25) as a proclamation of the Gospel for the life of the world (cf. Jn 3:16). To be set afire by the love of Christ is to be consumed by that fire, to grow in understanding by its light and to be warmed by its love (cf. 2 Cor 5:14). At the school of the saints, who open us to the vast horizons of God, I invite you never to stop wondering: What would Christ do if he were in my place? Transmitting the faith to the ends of the earth You too, young friends, by your baptism have become living members of the Church; together we have received the mission to bring the Gospel to everyone. You are at the threshold of life. To grow in the grace of the faith bestowed on us by the Church s sacraments plunges us into that great stream of witnesses who, generation after generation, enable the wisdom and experience of older persons to become testimony and encouragement for those looking to the future. And the freshness and enthusiasm of the young makes them a source of support and hope for those nearing the end of their journey. In this blend of different stages in life, the mission of the Church bridges the generations; our faith in God and our love of neighbor are a source of profound unity. This transmission of the faith, the heart of the Church s mission, comes about by the infectiousness of love, where joy and enthusiasm become the expression of a newfound meaning and fulfilment in life. The spread of the faith by attraction calls for hearts that are open and expanded by love. It is not possible to place limits on love, for love is strong as death (cf. Song 8:6). And that expansion generates encounter, witness, proclamation; it generates sharing in charity with all those far from the faith, indifferent to it and perhaps even hostile and opposed to it. Human, cultural and religious settings still foreign to the Gospel of Jesus and to the sacramental presence of the Church represent the extreme peripheries, the ends of the earth, to which, ever since the first Easter, Jesus missionary disciples have been sent, with the certainty that their Lord is always with them (cf. Mt 28:20; Acts 1:8). This is what we call the missio ad gentes. The most desolate periphery of all is where mankind, in need of Christ, remains indifferent to the faith or shows hatred for the fullness of life in God. All material and spiritual poverty, every form of discrimination against our brothers and sisters, is always a consequence of the rejection of God and his love. The ends of the earth, dear young people, nowadays are quite relative and always easily navigable. The digital world the social networks û\yôrü 14

that are so pervasive and readily available dissolves borders, eliminates distances and reduces differences. Everything appears within reach, so close and immediate. And yet lacking the sincere gift of our lives, we could well have countless contacts but never share in a true communion of life. To share in the mission to the ends of the earth demands the gift of oneself in the vocation that God, who has placed us on this earth, chooses to give us (cf. Lk 9:23-25). I dare say that, for a young man or woman who wants to follow Christ, what is most essential is to seek, to discover and to persevere in his or her vocation. Bearing witness to love I am grateful to all those ecclesial groups that make it possible for you to have a personal encounter with Christ living in his Church: parishes, associations, movements, religious communities, and the varied expressions of missionary service. How many young people find in missionary volunteer work a way of serving the least of our brothers and sisters (cf. Mt 25:40), promoting human dignity and witnessing to the joy of love and of being Christians! These ecclesial experiences educate and train young people not only for professional success, but also for developing and fostering their God-given gifts in order better to serve others. These praiseworthy forms of temporary missionary service are a fruitful beginning and, through vocational discernment, they can help you to decide to make a complete gift of yourselves as missionaries. The Pontifical Mission Societies were born of young hearts as a means of supporting the preaching of the Gospel to every nation and thus contributing to the human and cultural growth of all those who thirst for knowledge of the truth. The prayers and the material aid generously given and distributed through the Pontifical Mission Societies enable the Holy See to ensure that those who are helped in their personal needs can in turn bear witness to the Gospel in the circumstances of their daily lives. No one is so poor as to be unable to give what they have, but first and foremost what they are. Let me repeat the words of encouragement that I addressed to the young people of Chile: Never think that you have nothing to offer, or that nobody needs you. Many people need you. Think about it! Each of you, think in your heart: many people need me (Meeting with Young People, Maipu Shrine, 17 th January 2018). Dear young people, this coming October, the month of the missions, we will hold the Synod devoted to you. It will prove to be one more occasion to help us become missionary disciples, ever more passionately devoted to Jesus and his mission, to the ends of the earth. I ask Mary, Queen of the Apostles, Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and Blessed Paolo Manna to intercede for all of us and to accompany us always. Pope Francis û\yôrü 15 THE POPES ON THE HOLY ROSARY According to an account by fifteenth-century Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others. Since the prayers of the Rosary come from such excellent sources - from Our Lord Himself, from inspired Scripture, and from the Church - it is not surprising that the Rosary is so dear to our Blessed Mother and so powerful with heaven. Meditation on this cycle of Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous Mysteries makes the Rosary not only a breviary or summary of the Gospel and of Christian life, (Encyclical: Ingravescentibus malis) but also a compendium of the Liturgical Year. Pope Francis: The Rosary is an effective means for opening ourselves to God, for it helps us to overcome egotism and to bring peace to hearts, in the family, in society and in the world. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI: The Rosary is the prayer of the Christian who advances in the pilgrimage of faith, in the following of Jesus, preceded by Mary. ; We desire to welcome the Virgin s maternal request, committing ourselves to saying the rosary with faith for peace in our families, in countries, and in the whole world. (In general Audience) St t Pope John Paul II: The Rosary is my favorite prayer. ; Pray, pray much. Say the Rosary everyday ; I would therefore ask those who devote themselves to the pastoral care of families to recommend heartily the recitation of the Rosary. ; Recite the Rosary every day. I earnestly urge Pastors to pray the Rosary and to teach people in their Christian communities how to pray it. (Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae) Pope John Paul I: The Rosary is an impoverished prayer? What then would be a rich prayer? The Rosary is a procession of Paters, the prayer taught by Jesus; of Aves, the salutation of God to the Virgin û\yôrü 16

by means of the Angel; of Glorias, the praise of the Most Holy Trinity. (Homily on My Rosary ) Blessed Pope Paul VI: If evils increase, the devotion of the People of God should also increase....pray ardently to our most merciful mother Mary by saying the Rosary during the month of October, as We have already indicated. This prayer is well-suited to the devotion of the People of God, most pleasing to the Mother of God and most effective in gaining heaven s blessings. (Apostolic Exhortation : Marialis Cultus) St Pope John XXIII: My day must be one long prayer; prayer is the breath of life. I propose to recite all fifteen decades of the Rosary every day, if possible in the chapel before the Blessed Sacrament. ; If you recite the Family Rosary, all united, you shall taste peace. (Book: The Rosary and the Crisis in the Faith) Pope Pius XII: There is no surer means of calling down God s blessing upon the family... than the daily recitation of the Rosary. ; The home of the Christian family, like that of Nazareth, will become an earthly abode of sanctity, and, so to speak, a sacred temple, where the Holy Rosary will not only be the particular prayer which every day rises to heaven in an odor of sweetness, but will also form the most efficacious school of Christian discipline and Christian virtue. (Encyclical: Ingruentium Malorum ) Pope Pius XI: A powerful weapon to put the demons to flight ; The fathers and mothers of families particularly must give an example to their children, especially when, at sunset, they gather after the day s work, within the domestic walls, and recite the Holy Rosary on bended knees before the image of the Virgin. (Encyclical: Ingravescentibus Malis) Pope Benedict XV: The prayer of the Rosary is perfect, because of the praises it offers, the lessons it teaches, the graces it obtains, and the victories it achieves. The Roman Pontiffs have let pass no occasion of commending the Rosary and have enriched it with Apostolic Indulgences.( Encyclical: Fausto Appetente Die) St Pius X: The Rosary is the most beautiful and the richest of all prayers to the Mediatrix of all grace; It is the prayer that touches most the heart of the Mother of God. Say it each day! ; Amidst all prayers, the Rosary is the most beautiful, the richest in graces, and û\yôrü 17 the one that most pleases the Most Holy Virgin. (Spiritual Will of St Pius X) Pope Paul V: The Rosary is a treasure of graces Pope Julius III: The Rosary is the Glory of the Church. Pope Adrian VI: The Rosary is the scourge of the devil. Pope Leo XII: The Rosary is a sovereign remedy to errors and vices. jpuj;je;ij gpuhd;rp!; mth;fspd; bghd;bkhhpfs; ghtp vd;w cz;ik czh;nt kpl;gspf;fk;. mikjpia/ cd; thh;thy;/ g[d;rpupg;ghy;/ gpwud;g[r; nritahy; kw;wth;fsf;f th=;f/ mij c=;fsld; Ve;jpr; bry;y=;fs;. ifk;bgz; vd;w epiyapy;/ j=;fs; thh;it,iwtdf;f mh;g;gzpj;js;sth;fs;/ kuzj;ija[k; jhz;o/,iwtdpd; md;g[k;/ mtuj thf;f khwh jd;ika[k; epiyj;jpuf;fk; vd;w cz;ikia cyfpw;f vlj;jiuf;fpd;wdh;.,iwtdpd; jput[sj;ijg; g[upe;jbfhs;tjw;f fhykk;/ bghwika[k; njitg;glk; vd;gjhy;/ me;jg; bghwikia/ Mh;j;jlhf;!; Md;kPff; fuj;ju=;;fpy; fye;j bfhs;nthuf;f,iwtd; th=;f ntz;lk;. She asked each member of the group to offer daily prayer and a weekly sacrifice of a sou, about a penny, for the Church s worldwide Missionary work. Pauline insisted that her efforts be directed to all the Church s Missions, that it be universal. From Pauline s prayerful efforts came the Society for the Propagation of the Faith... now one of the Pontifical Mission Societies. The very first collection in 1822 supported the vast diocese of Louisiana, which then extended from the Florida Keys to Canada, as well as the Missions of Kentucky and China. The Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith continues to seek prayer and sacrifice for the world s Missions, now some 1,111 dioceses in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and remote regions of Latin America. Help is offered for pastoral and evangelizing programs, for catechists and their work, to build churches and chapels, for the work of Religious Communities in health care and education, and for communication and transportation needs. Today, Pauline s legacy and her quest continues to love without measure without end. Why Give to the Missions? The poor of the Missions of the world need the comfortable to supply roofs for their churches, medicine for their hospitals, and clothes for their backs, but the comfortable need the poor in order that they may have the blessing of God in their hearts, the charity of Christ in their souls, and the intercession of the poor who are friends of God. All Catholics, through their Baptism, have a responsibility to Share the good news of Jesus Christ through their support of the Pontifical Mission Societies. The Pontifical Mission Societies are at the service of the Roman Pontiff. By virtue of his ministry, the Pope knows and understands more than anyone else the pressing needs of the church around the world. The Pope reminds us of our worldwide Missionary responsibilities and invites us to participate with him. The Societies ask for prayer, sacrifice and financial support of the Church s works in the Mission lands around the world. The Pope reminds us of our û\yôrü 20

worldwide Missionary responsibilities and invites us to participate with him. Please continue to pray for the Church s Missionary work. Sharing your gifts along with your prayers allows you to partner with Pope Francis and the Pontifical Mission Societies in bringing the Gospel to those in need. By loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. World Mission Rosary In February of 1951, Archbishop Fulton J Sheen, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith from 1950 to 1966, inaugurated a World Mission Rosary in his Catholic Hour radio address. We must pray, and not for ourselves, but for the world. To this end, I have designed the World Mission Rosary. Each of the five decades is of a different color to represent the continents. Praying this Rosary, Archbishop Sheen said, would aid the Holy Father and his Society for the Propagation of the Faith by supplying him with practical support, as well as prayers, for the poor mission territories of the world. The different colored beads of each decade call to mind an area where the Church continues her evangelization efforts in Mission: GREEN for the forests of AFRICA; BLUE for the ocean surrounding the ISLANDS of the PACIFIC; WHITE symbolizing EUROPE, the seat of the Holy Father, shepherd of the world; RED, calling to mind the fire of faith that brought missionaries to the AMERICAS and YELLOW, the morning light of the East, for ASIA. mf;nlhgh khjk; ; tpoh nfhz;lhlk; gq;fj;jsq;fs; g[dpj FHe;ij bjurhs; Myak;? fhrpnkl/ brk;gpak;/ nkhiu g[dpj mtpyh bjurhs; Myak;?
