FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I have been informed by the Office of the Bishop that the Mass of Thanksgiving, giving praise to God for the many blessings shed on the parish throughout these 140 years will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 5:00pm. The celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Reverend Witold Mroziewski, J.C.D., D.D.. The homilist at the Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John Casey, former pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The Parish Pastoral Council and I have also discussed preliminary plans to have a dinner-dance to celebrate this special occasion. The dinner dance will take place at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston on Oct., 20th. More details to follow. Item Two: We are also planning to have a Super Raffle. Only 400 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winner will receive $20,000 and the parish will receive $20,000 (provided all the tickets are sold). More details to follow in future bulletins. Item Three: Since the tragic and horrific events of Charlottesvile, Virginia just one year ago, we have seen the effect and impact that racism has had on our society. The Bishops of the United States have formed a committee to focus and address the sin of racism. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop DiMarzio has formed a commission on Racism and Social Justice. The goal of this commission is to deal with the social and religious problems that racism in all of its forms presents to us. The commission would like to hear from all of the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn. To that end we will be hosting two open listening sessions, one in Brooklyn and one in Queens for all the faithful of the diocese to attend. These sessions are meant to be an opportunity for us to share how racism has impacted our parishes and the church as a whole. A session will be held on Saturday, June 16th starting at 11am at St Francis of Assisi/St. Blaise Church located at 1081 Nostrand Ave., Brooklyn. N. Y.11225 in the parish center. The Queens session will be held on Saturday, June 23rd at 11am at St. Clare Church, 137-35 Brookville Blvd., Brooklyn, N. Y. 11422 in the school auditorium. Thanks to all the generous individuals who made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish to date. As of June 1st, 186 parishioners/families have made a pledge to the ACA 2018. $66,141 has been pledged of which $53,095 has been paid. Our goal is $91,485.00. There remains time to make a pledge. You may find a donation envelope at the entrance of the church under the ACA posters. We now need $25,344 to reach goal. Also, please check and see if your employer participates in a matching gift program. If your employer does participate, please contact Msgr. Machalski for information concerning this program. God bless all of those who have given so generously to the 2018 ACA. AROUND THE PARISH First Reading: Genesis 3:9-15 Response Psalm: Psalm 130:1-2,3-4,5-6,7-8 Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:13 5:1 Gospel: John 12:31b-32 Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord please pray for the recently deceased: Julie Luchan Lucy Manfredonia
