Re lection on Today s Gospel Luke 1:57-66, 80 One of ways I like to consider the upcoming Sunday readings is by using a form of prayer called Ignatian Contemplation. Basically, Ignatian Contemplation invites us to read the Scriptures and place ourselves in the story by choosing the role of one of the people involved. As the scene plays out, we re encouraged to become aware of the feelings that arise and converse with those in the story. Finally, we re lect on the experience. When I sat with today s Gospel reading, I found myself drawn to the role of one of Elizabeth and Zechariah s neighbors. I ve heard this reading many times but I m not sure that I ever became aware of the crowd s role in this story. Notice what the reading reveals about the neighbors and relatives: They rejoice with Elizabeth at the birth of her son. They welcome the new baby into the community by being there for his circumcision. They challenge Elizabeth and Zechariah in their choosing the name, John. They acknowledge the extraordinary circumstances around John s birth (Elizabeth conceiving late in life, Zechariah s regaining the ability to speak at the naming of John) and contemplate what it means for the family and for them. In their fear and questioning they don t abandon the family. Instead, they recognize the role of God in all of it. In my work, I am aware of the deep need we have for community. Studies suggest that the rise in depression and anxiety in our country is linked to increasing isolation among people. In fact, years ago I saw a survey that suggested that one in four people has no one in whom they can con ide. Technology is great. But we often confuse being communicative with being connected. The fact is, we need each other, just as Elizabeth and Zechariah needed their neighbors and relatives. Who in your life needs your support right now? How can you be truly present to them this week? --Kathie Tilot is a spiritual director and member of Prince of Peace Page 6 Prince of Peace Parish
