RUFUS M. IIILBURN The Reverend Rufus ti. Hjlburn wa s born on April I, 1854, the son of Frank ~nd Sallir Hester Hilburn. Ile began his full time Chris1 ian work ln the latter part of 1885. The Heverend HiLiurn led i~ the organizing of the Zion IIill Bapt ist Church, Rladen Ba pl lst Associat ion. Known pastorates include the El ah, Sandy Grove and H~ckorv Grove Bapt i st Churches. liis address in 1896 was Pinebluff (Fair Bluff), North Carolina. RUFUS MARI01 HILBUR1 1885-890, 1894-895, 1904-1905 Rev. H'lburn was born in Bladen County on April 1, 1854, and was t he son o f Frank and Sallie Hester Hilburn. He received h i s higher education at the Ashpole Academy in Roberson County. He was ordaine d by the Galeed Baptist Church, Bladenboro. H was the moderator o f t he Bladen Baptist Associa- tion from 1906-1910. Rev. Hilburn was a chart r me mber of Zion Hi 1, and was i t s f irst, t hird and seventh pastor wh e re h e ministere d for a total of nine years. Part of this ministry was without salary due t o the economic conditions of the day. He married Lucy Caroline Hi burn, and t heir children were Furney Austin, Franklin Fleetwood, Elvery Irvin, Theodore Clavius, Letitia Ann, Frederick Pol k, Henry Marion, Lucy Naomi. He was indeed an able and dedicated minister. He died June 29, 1929, and is buried in t he old Hickory Grove Baptist Church c emetery.
