Recap

Recap Chronicles: Overview: Context of Post-Exiles Genealogies: Kings, Priests & Levites What Makes a Good King King David s Reign: - Wrong Handling & Right Handling of the Ark - David s sin Ornan the Jebusite - TEMPLE 4

Recap Context of the Post-Exiles: Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing: 5

Recap Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may the Lord his God be with him. Let him go up. (2 Chron 36:22-23) 6

Recap Last week, we saw how a story of sin as well as mercy received, led to the Temple Site: the field of Ornan the Jebusite The Chronicler also details for us the significance of this place in 2 Chronicles 3:1 7

Recap Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to David his father, at the place that David had appointed, on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. (2 Chron 3:1) 8

Recap In fact Moriah י ה) (מ ור is only mentioned twice in the whole Old Testament. Once in Genesis and, the other in Chronicles! 9

1 Chron. 22 - Solomon

1 Chron 22:1 Conclusion of episode with the field of Ornan the Jebusite: Then David said, Here shall be the house of the Lord God and here the altar of burnt offering for Israel. 18

1 Chron 22:2-4 David commanded to gather together the resident aliens who were in the land of Israel, and he set stonecutters to prepare dressed stones for building the house of God. David also provided great quantities of iron for nails for the doors of the gates and for clamps, as well as bronze in quantities beyond weighing, and cedar timbers without number, for the Sidonians and Tyrians brought great quantities of cedar to David. 19

1 Chron 2:5 Solomon s youth/inexperience: For David said, Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and glory throughout all lands. I will therefore make preparation for it. So David provided materials in great quantity before his death. 20

1 Chron 22:9-10 Behold, a son shall be born to you who shall be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies. For his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. He shall build a house for my name. He shall be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne in Israel for ever. 21

1 Chron 22:9-10 Solomon normally associated with wisdom but Solomon (Hebrew: למ ה,ש Shelomoh) peaceful ש ל ם Same root as Hebrew shalam 22

Ark concerns: 1 Chron 22:19 Now set the mind and heart to seek the LORD your God. Arise and build the sanctuary of the LORD God, so that the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the holy vessels of God may be brought into a house built for the name of the LORD. 23

1 Chron. 23 - Levites

1 Chron 23 David organizes the Levites (1 Chron 23:1-6) David assembled all the leaders of Israel and the priests and the Levites. The Levites, thirty years old and upwards, were numbered, and the total was 38,000 men. Twenty-four thousand of these, David said, shall have charge of the work in the house of the Lord, 6,000 shall be officers and judges, 5 4,000 gatekeepers, and 4,000 shall offer praises to the Lord with the instruments that I have made for praise. And David organized them into divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 25

1 Chron 23:25 For David said, The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever. And so the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the things for its service. 26

1 Chron. 24 - Priests

1 Chron 24 Echoes Numbers 3:1-4 These are the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai. These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests. But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of Aaron their father. 28

1 Chron. 24 So in 1 Chron 24, of the descendants of Eleazar and Ithamar, David reinstated the priestly service: Since more chief men were found among the sons of Eleazar than among the sons of Ithamar, they organized them under sixteen heads of fathers houses of the sons of Eleazar, and eight of the sons of Ithamar. (2 Chron. 24:4) 29

Duties: 1 Chron 24:19 These had as their appointed duty in their service to come into the house of the LORD according to the procedure established for them by Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded them. 30

1 Chron. 25 - Musicians

1 Chron 25 Musicians: Asaph & sons Heman & sons Jeduthun & sons Role: prophesied with lyres, with harps and with cymbals (1 Chron. 25:1) 32

1 Chron 25 Division of responsibilities: Asaph prophesied under the direction of the king (v. 2) Jeduthun prophesied with the lyre in thanksgiving and praise to the LORD (v.3) Heman king s seer ; organizes his sons 33

1 Chron. 25 They were all under the direction of their father in the music in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the order of the king. (25:6) 34

1 Chron 26:1-19 - Gatekeepers

1 Chron 26 Duties of the gatekeepers: These divisions of the gatekeepers, corresponding to their chief men, had duties, just as their brothers did, ministering in the house of the LORD. And they cast lots by fathers houses, small and great alike, for their gates. 36

1 Chron 26:20-28 - Treasuries

1 Chron 26:20-32 1 Chron 26:20 And of the Levites, Ahijah had charge of the treasuries of the house of God (1) and the treasuries of the dedicated gifts. (2) - (2) Spoils won from battles Includes battles by Samuel, Saul, Abner, Joabn (v. 28) 38

1 Chron 26:29-32 Hashabiah and his brothers Westward of Jordan 1700 men of ability had oversight of Israel westward of Jordan for all the work of the LORD for the service of the king. 40

1 Chron 26:29-32 Jerijah Chief of whatever genealogies Men from Jazer in Gilead Oversight of the Reubenites, Gadies and the half-tribe of Mannaseh for everything pertaining to God and for the affairs of the king 41

1 Chron 27: Military, Leaders of Tribes, King s Treasuries, Counselors

1 Chron 27: Military, Leaders of Tribes, King s Treasuries, Counselors 1 Chron 27:1 these officers who served the king in all matters concerning the divisions that came and went month after month throughout the year, each division numbering 24,000 288,000 men - 24,000 serve for one month 43

1 Chron 27: Military, Leaders of Tribes, King s Treasuries, Counselors Leaders of tribes These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel. David did not count those below twenty years of age, for the LORD had promised to make Israel as many as the stars of heaven. Joab the son of Zeruiah began to count, but did not finish. Yet wrath came upon Israel for this, and the number was not entered in the chronicles of King David. (v. 22b 24) 44

1 Chron 27: Military, Leaders of Tribes, King s Treasuries, Counselors King s Treasuries: Treasuries in the Country, Cities, Villages and Towers Jonathan Work of the field for the soil Ezri Vineyards Shimei Produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars Zabdi Olive and Sycamore Trees Shephelah Etc. 45

Concluding remarks on 1 Chron 22-27

Concluding Remarks The extensive nature of these lists indicates that the Chronicler wanted to impress his readers with the fact that all of Israel supported Solomon as they had David. Moreover, just as support for the temple builder was widespread in David's day, the reestablishment of the temple and its services in the Chronicler's day required extensive support by military and civilian leaders. (Pratt, Richard) 48

1 Chron 28-29

1 Chron. 28 Israel Assembles: David assembled at Jerusalem all the officials of Israel, the officials of the tribes, the officers of the divisions that served the king, the commanders of thousands, the commanders of the hundreds, the stewards of all the property and livestock of the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the mighty men and all the seasoned warriors. (1 Chron. 28:1) 50

1 Chron. 28 Solomon s charge and coronation: It is Solomon your son who shall build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. I will establish his kingdom forever if he continues strong in keeping my commandments and my rules; as he is today. Now therefore in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God, observe and seek out all the commandments of the LORD your God, that you may possess the good land and leave it for an inheritance to your children after you forever. (1 Chron 28:6-8) 51

1 Chron 28 The plans of the temple given to Solomon: All that he made clear to me in writing from the hand of the LORD, all the work to be done according to the plan. (1 Chron. 28:19) 52

1 Chron 28 Support for Solomon from the people: And behold the divisions of the priests and the priests and the Levites for all the service of the house of God; and with you in all the work will be every willing man who has skill for any kind of service; also the officers and all the people who will be wholly at your command. (v21) 53

1 Chron 29 David s Offering for the Temple (v1-5) The People s Offering for the Temple (v6-9) 54

1 Chron 29 But where is the material from? O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. (v16-17) 55

1 Chron 29 Solomon becomes King: And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and they anointed him as prince for the LORD, and Zadok as priest. (v22) 56

David dies 1 Chron 29 Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. The time that he reigned over Israel was forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. The he died at a good age, full of days, riches, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place. (1 Chron 29:26-28) 57

Application

Jesus: Something greater than Solomon The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. (Matt. 12:42) 59

Jesus: Doing the things of the Father So Jesus said to them, When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him. (John 8:28-29) 60

Temple of Artemis/Diana Paul writes extensively to Ephesians about a different kind of temple Living in Ephesus 61

Building the temple As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:4-5) 62

Our lives: Spiritual Sacrifices Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. (Phil 2:17) 63

The Post-Exilic Dilemma The Chronicler writes extensively about lists of people who are united in heart and mind to support the son of King David to build the temple Will the returning exiles do the same? 64

The 21 st Century Christian s Dilemma Will we join the Son who is building the house of living stones according to His Father s decree? 65

Comfort for the Christian The rest of the New Jerusalem And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away. (Rev 21:2-4) 66

Comfort for the Christian And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. (Rev 21:22) 67

Comfort for the Christian Christians will all be assembled at the coronation of the King 68
