THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 2, 2018 11:00 AM HOLY EUCHARIST, RITE II Service Music from Deutsche Messe by Franz Schubert (1797-1828); arr. Richard Proulx (1937-2010) Voluntary Nun komm der Heiden Heiland J. S. Bach (1685-1750) Welcome and Announcements Introit Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, God of our ancestors: to you be praise and glory for ever. You called the patriarchs to live by the light of faith and to journey in the hope of your promised fulfillment. May we be obedient to your call and be ready and watchful to receive your Christ, a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for you are our light and our salvation. Blessed be God for ever. THE WORD OF GOD Please stand, as able, and sing The Entrance Hymn 57 Lo! He Comes, with Clouds Descending (blue) Hymnal 1982 Celebrant People Celebrant All sing Kyrie eleison Christ Church Christiana Hundred WELCOME! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we are glad you are with us today to join in the worship of God and to share in Christ s presence given to us in the sacrament of bread and wine. You are welcome here. Blessed are you, holy and living God. You come to your people and set them free. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated for The Story Reading I Chronicles 22:1-10 (NIV) Then David said, The house of the Lord God is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel. So David gave orders to assemble the foreigners residing in Israel, and from among them he appointed stonecutters to prepare dressed stone for building the house of God. He provided a large amount of iron to make nails for the doors of the gateways and for the fittings, and more bronze than could be weighed. He also provided more cedar logs than could be counted, for the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought large numbers of them to David. David said, My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it. So David made extensive preparations before his death. Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel. David said to Solomon: My son, I had it in my heart to build a house for the Name of the Lord my God. But this word of the Lord came to me: You have shed much blood and have fought many wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. But you will have a son who will be a man of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon, and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign. He is the one who will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. The Choir sings Psalm 25:1-9 Ad te, Domine, levavi Chant: W. Russell (1777-1813) Unto thee, O Lord, will I lift up my soul; my God I have put my trust in thee:

O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me. For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed; but such as transgress without a cause shall be put to confusion. Show me thy ways, O Lord, and teach me thy paths. Lead me forth in thy truth and learn me: for thou art the God of my salvation; in thee hath been my hope all the day long. Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercies, and thy loving-kindnesses which have been ever of old. O remember not the sins and offences of my youth; but according to thy mercy think thou upon me, O Lord, for thy goodness. Gracious and righteous is the Lord; therefore will he teach sinners in the way. Them that are meek shall he guide in judgment; and such as are gentle them shall he learn his way. All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. The Second Reading I Thessalonians 3:9-13 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. Please stand and sing The Gradual Hymn 54 Savior of the Nations, Come! Hymnal 1982 The Gospel is carried into the congregation so that we remember it is our Good News to hear and to share. The Gospel Reading Luke 21:25-36 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Priest People Jesus said, There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Then he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Once the Book of Gospels has returned to its place of honor, the People may be seated at the invitation of the preacher. The Sermon The Crown: The Trials of a King Stephen Setzer

Please stand for The Nicene Creed Celebrant Let us declare our faith in God: People We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. A member of the parish leads the prayers. The Prayers of the People Watchful at all times, let us pray for strength to stand with confidence before our Maker and Redeemer. [silence] That God may bring in his kingdom with justice and mercy, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. That God may establish among the nations righteousness and peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. That we may seek Christ in the Scriptures and recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. That God may bind up the brokenhearted, restore the sick, and raise up all who have fallen, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. That the light of God s coming may dawn on all who live in darkness and the shadow of death, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. That, with all the saints in light, we may shine forth as lights for the world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. We commend ourselves and all for whom we pray to the mercy and protection of our heavenly Father. [petitions and intercessions may be spoken] The Celebrant offers a concluding prayer. Please kneel, as able, for The Confession of Sin Celebrant To cast away the works of darkness, let us confess our sins to God. People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrant offers the absolution. The Peace Priest People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Being seated, we begin with a time of offering, giving money as a sign that our life serves God s purposes and showing our gratitude for God s many blessings. For those who give online or will text a contribution to (302) 244-5368, a card is available in the narthex to participate in the act of offering. Newcomers and guests may place the welcome card in the offering plate. Anthem Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) Canite tuba in Sion, quia prope est dies Domini: ecce venit ad salvandum nos. Erunt prava in directa, et aspera in vias planas: veni Domini et noli tardare. Alleluia. Sound the trumpet in Zion for the day of the Lord is near: he shall come to save us. Winding paths will be made straight and rough places smooth: come, O Lord, and do not delay. Alleluia. Please stand and sing The Presentation Hymn 304, vs. 1, 3 I Come with Joy to Meet My Lord Hymnal 1982 The Great Thanksgiving (red) Book of Common Prayer 367 God The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our praise in the ancient song of the Sanctus. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our acclamation of Christ s sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection, saying Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; The Celebrant continues the prayer, concluding By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

The Celebrant invites the People to say the prayer Jesus taught his first disciples. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We sing the anthem at the breaking of the bread, which is Christ s Body, broken for us. Please be seated after the sacrament is presented. Agnus Dei (S-164) Hymnal 1982 All are welcome to receive the sacrament of Christ, kneeling or standing, either consuming the bread and drinking from the cup or dipping (intincting) the bread carefully into the cup. Gluten-free host are available; let the clergy know your need when they approach you at the rail. If you are unable to come forward, ask an usher to let the clergy know. Communion Anthem Steven Rickards (contemporary) Come, thou long-expected Jesus born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee. Israel s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art: dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal merit, rule in all our hearts alone, by thy all-sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne. Please stand for The Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray. People Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Blessing The Celebrant blesses the People. People Amen. Hymn in Procession 73 The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns Hymnal 1982 Dismissal Priest People Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.
