FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT February 14, 2016

WELCOME Welcome to First United Methodist Church; we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. We hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come and be a part of what God is doing here. LENT We are now in the season of Lent. The Lenten season began on Ash Wednesday (February 10th) and spans the 40 days (not counting Sundays) leading up to Easter. The length of the season is in commemoration of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness before beginning his public ministry. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement, and self-denial. Let us practice these things and make a deeper connection with God as we observe a holy Lent. VISITOR / NEW MEMBER CLASS We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. The class assembles at 9:30am in room PH101 next door in the Perry Home. This week s class is Ministries of First Church. Next week, Serving at First Church will help you find your place to use your gifts and talents in service in the church and community. We hope you join us each week. NURSERY and CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available this morning for children up to five years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. FLOWERS The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of the Hoefflin family, and the Jones family by Jo and Bill Jones. This ritual calls for the one making the offering to confess God as deliverer of the people and provider of the harvest enjoyed in the Promised Land. In this way, the ritual both reminds and reinforces the identity of the family with the whole people and the people with the story of their God. Psalm: 91:1-2, 9-16 By singing or praying this psalm, the congregation confesses God s continued promise of protection for God s people. Second Lesson: Romans 10:8b-13 Paul declares God s intention to save all who believe upon and confess Jesus as Lord. Gospel Lesson: Luke 4:1-13 Luke recounts the temptation of Jesus following his baptism and a period of fasting in the wilderness prior to the beginning of his public ministry. Jesus consistently confesses his identity in response to the temptations to choose another way.
