21 st Sunday after Pentecost (Year B) 10:30 A.M. Sunday, October 18 th, 2015 Today s Texts: selections from the Gospels regarding money (The worship service begins with the prelude. Let us silently prepare our hearts and allow others the same opportunity.) *We invite you to rise in body or in spirit Chimes Prelude: Song Ned Rorem Words of Welcome and Announcements Introit: Goodness is Stronger Than Evil Desmond Tutu/John L. Bell *Call to Worship Sarah E. Weaver Delight! Children of God, delight! We are delighted to be here together; to worship as a family and to be united in a common ministry. We gather in worship to celebrate this community. We celebrate the love that we have for one another, the support that we give to one another and the journey we are on to be united by God s grace. We come together this day to delight in offering our gifts. We delight in the gifts we are giving, the pledges we are making and the future we are creating. We join our hearts and our spirits today and delight in giving. We are here! We are delighted! We are united! Let us worship the God who loves when we delight in giving. *Hymn No. 697 Take My Life HENDON *Invitation to Confession *Prayer of Confession God of amazing grace, you have asked us to give of ourselves, wholly and completely. We have heard your call and have responded with great affirmation and joy. Yet there are times when we fall short. Times when we forget. Page 2

*Kyrie Times when we focus on the wrong things. Times when we put our money and our resources into our earthly possessions and not into a church that you have created and blessed. Help us to have faith, O God. Help us to give through that faith. Help us to be blessed by that faith. Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness *Gloria Patri Glory to God, No. 581 *The Peace Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we also ought to forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Please greet those around you Prayer for Illumination Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to you, O Lord. Be our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen. Anthem Make a Joyful Noise Sally K. Albrecht Second Reading Selected Readings from the Gospels This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Dialogue Sermon *Hymn No. 688 Rev. Stephen M. Fearing & SIPC Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart MORECAMBE The Prayers of the People Welcoming New Member - Marilynn Pysher We welcome Marilynn Pysher as an official member of SIPC by way of Reaffirmation of Faith. Profession of Faith Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Page 4

Welcome Let us welcome Marilynn as she joins with us in the worship and mission of the church. With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you to share with us in the ministry of Christ, for we are all one in him. Call to Offering The Offertory Serenada" Ned Rorem *****Please take a moment to fill out the friendship pads***** *The Doxology Glory to God, No. 606 *Prayer of Thanksgiving *The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. *Hymn No. 712 As Those of Old Their Firstfruits Brought Recognition of Departing Member - Gertrude Bourne In baptism, our Lord Jesus Christ put his name on you and received you into the church. We have rejoiced to welcome you into our fellowship in the gospel. In this community of faith you have been nurtured as you have heard the good news of God s saving love. You have been nourished at Christ s table and sent out to be Christ s witness in the world. God has blessed you and made you a blessing in our life together. You have deepened our joy and lightened our sorrow. We will miss your love and support, yet we rejoice that you will now bless others as you have blessed us. Page 5

Let us pray together: Faithful God, keep, preserve, and protect Gert all her days. By the power of your Holy Spirit, may she be salt of the earth and light for the world. Lead her to new ministries, secure in the faith that binds us forever in the body of Christ. Amen. *Charge & Benediction Choral Benediction: Thuma Mina (Send Me Lord ) South African Postlude Encore Toccata Craig A. Penfield Why I Pledge Ruling Elder Laura Nelsen, Class of 2017 When I was asked to write about stewardship, I thought to myself, what can I say that hasn t already been said about supporting our church and its missions? I can only tell my story because, certainly, all of us have a story about why we are a member of SIPC. I hadn t been to or belonged to a church for many years when a friend invited me to attend services with her at SIPC. This friend and I had been discussing religion and God for a very long time and I had always felt defensive and skeptical about organized religion. The music is what first drew me in, and I also found the minister s sermons thoughtprovoking (which led to many more discussions with my friend). Immediately, I felt challenged to think and examine my long held beliefs about organized religion. At some point, I started attending regularly and found myself trusting enough to let go and let God. Now I can t imagine my life without SIPC and our congregation! Today, I pledge! I pledge because I want to support the new and different ministries that are taking place at SIPC. I am practical enough to know that everything takes money, from taking care of our aging building and property, to supporting our staff and the ministries. In 2014 our congregation voted to hire a full-time pastor. This past year has been uplifting! I want to be part of the excitement of moving forward by supporting the faithful work and ministry taking place here at SIPC! Page 6
