We have all loved and lost in one way or another. Some have lost spouses, family members, or close friends. Some have lost the sense of home or purpose or belonging. The central story of our Christian faith is about love and loss. And it s also about new life after loss. It s about the great love between Jesus and his followers. A love that drove the disciples to leave everything behind that they held dear to experience life in a new way...a life that was based on Jesus teachings of God s Reign. And it goes a step further. After Jesus followers found new life in him, they lost it all again on the day that Jesus was crucified. All that they had left behind, and all that they had gained in their new life in Jesus, probably all seemed like it had been for naught. But the story of the resurrection gives us hope that even when all seems to be lost, even when we ve lost that which has been lost and found again, there is still new life. Someone asked me recently, To whom did the resurrected Jesus appear? I hadn t thought about that before. And it struck me as interesting that it seems the resurrected Jesus only appeared to his followers. He didn t appear to the scribes and pharisees or to King Herod or the chief priest, not even to the masses of people who crowded around him throughout his few short years of his ministry. The resurrected Jesus, the Jesus of new life, appeared to those who followed him. That s encouraging to me. That as a follower of Jesus, I can have hope in the new life of this resurrected Jesus. That I can expect life after loss. That even when everything is gone, there is still the promise of new life. Let s take this message of new life to heart, as individuals and as members of our church family. Let s look for God s promise of new life. And though we grieve our losses and remember those we have loved and lost, let us not live focusing on that which we have lost; but instead, let us focus on the new life that we ve been promised by God, which is both here and yet to come. Yours in Faith, Pastor Rob
