Sixth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2015 How to Make the Bible Boring and Other News NBC s miniseries A.D. The Bible Continues has been telling the story of what happened after the Resurrection of Jesus. It s been on the air since Easter Sunday. I don t have TV, but a friend told me I could watch it online at NBC.com. I did that for 3 episodes, but then had to stop because it was boring! I know other people love it I m intrigued by why I found it boring. Parts of A.D. moved me. It captured the mystery of the Resurrection, and understood the political issues of Jesus day. A.D. is taking some things from Luke s story of Jesus, some from John s story and blending them all together, and that is fine, too. I don t expect a step-by-step retelling of the New Testament on TV. When the brilliant director George Stevens made his beautiful film The Greatest Story Ever Told about the life of Jesus, using almost every star in Hollywood at the time (such as Angela Lansbury as Pilate s wife, John Wayne as the Roman centurion at the foot of the cross), Stevens blended the stories, and he even had Jesus speaking lines from St Paul s letters! But Stevens got the tone and feel of Jesus absolutely right, because George Stevens an Academy Award-winning director was a genius. Get that film on Netflix or Amazon. The reason A.D. bored me is that it uses the dramatic events of the early Christians as just a backdrop for a soap opera of political and romantic intrigue. Continue to watch it, but take note that the A.D. Faith Companion link on NBC.com nicely gets you into the Bible itself with great resources. All of which is my plug for saying: go back to the original! For real excitement, pick up your Bible and read the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, and then you will truly experience the greatest story ever told. The Annual Catholic Appeal continues to grow in our parish, gathering support for over 60 ministries of the Church in Western Washington and projects back in our parish such as sending our youth pilgrims to World Youth Day 2016 with Pope Francis and preparing for the renovation of the kitchen and parish hall. This year I took a long look at my support of the Appeal and realized that I could increase my gift to a $1 a day for a year something that do-able when you look at it day by day, and that brings about so much good. Please join in prayer for the success of the Appeal, and if you haven t made your participation commitment yet please consider joining me in just $1 a day! Thank you for your support of the Annual Catholic Appeal. Happy Mother s Day! Give thanks for your mom! The photo on the right is my mother Marie at her sister Dora s house, White Gables, on the shores of Lake Bemidji, Minnesota. My cousins and I are heading back to Bemidji this summer to visit our family s graves and honor the people who made us who we are today, particularly our moms! We honor family for their role in our lives, even if things weren t always the best between us. This Mother s Day, if your mother or is alive in this world, honor her with a visit or call. If your mother is alive in the world to come, honor her with a prayer. The promised gift back to you for honoring her is pretty incredible (Exodus 20:12)!
