Top of Form Our Second Annual Catechist Retreat, which provides essential catechist enrichment and development, was held on Thursday, January 17. Monsignor Lisante asked our teachers to reflect upon the Holy Family for guidance in interacting with their students. He recalled the bible passage in which 12-year old Jesus was missing for three days before he was found in the temple teaching the elders. Monsignor reflected that Jesus was a special child who caused Mary and Joseph many anxious moments, but that didn t affect their love for him. Even though they were baffled and didn t understand what Jesus was all about, they were always caring, patient and supportive of him. Likewise, we may not understand the behaviors of our students, but we cannot give up on them. Monsignor encouraged us to remain empathetic and patient by keeping in mind that like Jesus, each child is special and may have challenges of which we are not aware. We were also reminded that while it may not appear that our students are listening to us or learning from us, we are still reaching them by planting seeds of faith. Later in their lives they will recall something they learned in our class, or something we said or did, and they will be touched by it. Monsignor Lisante also addressed the ongoing issues affecting our Catholic Church. He urged us not to give up on the Church nor to allow our love for the Church to be diminished or lost during these challenging and difficult times. After Monsignor s talk, we gathered for refreshments and fellowship in the rectory.

Page 5 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish JANUARY 27, 2019 January 17, 2019 by New York State Catholic Conference For Immediate Release: January 17, 2019 A Statement from the Catholic Bishops of New York State Words are insufficient to describe the profound sadness we feel at the contemplated passage of New York State s new proposed abortion policy. We mourn the unborn infants who will lose their lives, and the many mothers and fathers who will suffer remorse and heartbreak as a result. The so-called Reproductive Health Act will expand our state s already radically permissive law, by empowering more health practitioners to provide abortion and removing all state restrictions on late-term procedures. With an abortion rate that is already double the national average, New York law is moving in the wrong direction. We renew our pledge to offer the resources and services of our charitable agencies and health services to any woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, to support her in bearing her infant, raising her family or placing her child for adoption. There are life-affirming choices available, and we aim to make them more widely known and accessible. Our Governor and legislative leaders hail this new abortion law as progress. This is not progress. Progress will be achieved when our laws and our culture once again value and respect each unrepeatable gift of human life, from the first moment of creation to natural death. Would that not make us truly the most enlightened and progressive state in the nation? Timothy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York Most Rev. Edward B. Scharfenberger Bishop of Albany Most Rev. Nicholas DiMarzio Bishop of Brooklyn Most Rev. Richard J. Malone Bishop of Buffalo Most Rev. Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg Most Rev. Salvatore R. Matano Bishop of Rochester Most Rev. John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham Bishop of Syracuse And the Auxiliary and Retired Bishops of New York State

Ministry of Consolation The most valuable gifts we can give are those that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love, and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring, and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral Mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector, or EM, please give some though as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. If you are considering volunteering for Ministry of Consolation and have questions about doing so or questions about what each position entails, please call the Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260. I would be happy to speak to anyone considering joining this group of wonderful volunteers that already belong to this Ministry. We Care Blankets As our wonderful group of Care Blanket volunteers continue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing! Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count as of January 16 stands at 3,436. I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Outreach is happy to accept donations of crochet hooks, and is especially in need of acrylic yarns in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at 516-5411260. Matthew 25:40
