Words from Our Pastor Bob Mitchell Volume 6, Issue 1 January 2018 Important to Note: Financial Peace University begins Marriage 911 begins Annual Congregational Meeting February 11 As we turn the calendar from one year to the next, we thumb through the pages, well worn and scribbled with what s happened in the past 12 months. We then turn our a en on to plans and an cipa on for the next 12 months. As a church, the past year held a wide array of emo ons and ac vity for us. As I prepared remarks for a Men s gathering to begin last year, I told those gathered that 2017 will be a year of either heavenly ac vity or missed opportunity. While I was thinking primarily in terms of facility expansion and the funding needed to accomplish it, li le did I know all that God had in mind. Before the elders voted early February whether or not to launch a capital campaign, Jon Knapp (our Student Pastor) informed a few of us that he was exploring whether God was calling him to a much larger ministry. And soon a er that, Zak Kear (Assistant to Jon) informed us that the largest Chris an camp in southern California had called him to lead a program there. In addi on to these two, we had already been looking for someone to take Jessica Klinker s spot to lead the Children s Ministry. We are deeply grateful for these dedicated staff members who have ministered among us and felt God s call to different ministries. As the elders prayed and deliberated to determine the course we felt God wanted us to take, one elder made the observa on that we must be doing something right for these larger ministries to want the people we ve raised up. The Session decided unanimously to proceed with the expansion, despite the possibility of staff changes. The resul ng capital campaign surprised many when the total amount pledged was $1.6 million toward the expansion. Independent of any of these expansion pledges or funds, we began work to renovate the front pla orm of the sanctuary. This renova on is a tangible expression that ministry con nues as we look for those God would send to us to help a depleted staff. Pastor Ma s leadership was crucial with the allchurch small group study last fall en tled S.T.O.R.Y. But as that series was wrapping up, Ma informed us that a er 21 years of ministry at Lincoln, the pull toward being a site pastor led him to accept new leadership at a larger church in Hollister. So leadership during 2017 has been challenging to say the least. I am deeply grateful to the many volunteers who have kept our children s and Student Ministries flourishing. Under the leadership of Kristen Lambdin, our new Children s Director, the midweek children s ministry packs out every square inch of classrooms we ve currently got. And Miranda Abrescy, our new Assistant Director of Student Ministry has been helped by a dozen regular volunteers to keep ministry to Junior and Senior High students thriving. And I couldn t be more excited to be joined by Pastor Jonathan Hathorn who will join the pastoral staff as the lead implementer of a ministry model that was suggested to us by Jon Knapp a er he le. You ll be hearing much more from us about this model in the coming months. 2017 was a year of transi on for Lincoln. 2018 promises to be an amazing year filled with opportuni es to lean into God s wonderful provision of new leadership and new ways of ministering Jesus life to our region. Trus ng that we ll marvel together at the end of 2018 as to all that God did, I am wonderfully blessed to be, Your Pastor, Bob

Introducing Jon Hathorn Hi, my name is Jon Hathorn. A Child of God, a husband, a dad and a grandfather! Bev and I have been married for 33 years. We have two daughters. Chris is married to Casey, and they live here in Stockton. Heidi is married to Eric, and they have two sons - Riley two and half and Hunter two months. They live near Portland, Oregon. I am a na ve Stocktonian, and as a boy I a ended First Presbyterian Church and have always had an apprecia on for God. In an effort to try and earn God's favor, I prayed "The Lord's Prayer" mul ple mes each night. I didn't understand anything about God's grace, but I did know that I was not worthy of going to heaven and needed Him. As a high school student a friend invited me to Hume Lake Chris an Camp, and it Hasn t this year just flown by?! I cannot believe we are already at the start of another year. AWANA has con nued to thrive with 50-60 kids in a endance every week! We finished up our first semester last month with a fun Christmas Party! We enjoyed a drive in movie night in our pajamas and it was a blast! It was amazing to see our kids get so crea ve with their cars! Looking forward to was there in June 1977, that I made a personal decision to accept God's forgiveness and make Jesus Christ the Lord of my life. I had no problem admi ng that I was a sinner and in need of His death on the cross as a payment for my sins. I first got involved in serving the Lord with Jr. High students, and since those first years was allowed to be involved in service with children, adults, high school students, and men. I have been so blessed with several mentors who discipled and trained me in knowing Christ and being involved in ministry. I am so grateful for God allowing me to serve Him and for those people who have provided opportuni es for me to serve Him both in the church and in missions. Philippians 1:6 is my favorite verse, "For I am confident of this very Children s Ministries - Kristen Lambdin star ng AWANA back up again on January 10th 2018. I am so excited for 2018! We have a calendar full of fun events and ac vi es for kids and families, star ng with a Family Service Day at the Stockton Food Bank! A couple of favorite things: laughing, Mexican food, donuts, watching sports, and being at the coast or in the mountains. A great joy of mine is when someone has an 'ah-ha' moment with the Lord. This might be knowing or experiencing something new with the Lord, learning something new about God, or being faithful and taking a new step in service and ministry with the Lord. I look forward to many ministry moments, fun mes, and meaning conversa ons with the people of Lincoln Presbyterian Church, as well as being involved in together in reaching people with the good news of Jesus Christ. derful volunteers who have served the kids of LPC throughout this past year, our monthly nursery volunteers, weekly AWANA leaders, Pre-k/Kindergarten teachers, and 1 st -6 th grade Sunday school teachers. Life at Lincoln through Small Groups - Introducing Sandy Parker! Let me introduce myself! I am Sandy Parker and I am the new Interim Small Group Coordinator at Lincoln. My husband Bruce and I have been at Lincoln since October 2016, and we are grateful for opportuni es to connect here. I don t know about you, but for me, connec ng can some mes be difficult. Although most people are welcoming, warm and friendly, it s o en hard to step out of our comfort zones to give others a chance. But step out we must! We were not created to be alone. God created us to establish and grow rela onships, and only then can we live the full life He intends for us. We need each other! And that brings us to Lincoln s Small Groups. Small Groups have one, simple purpose: to bring people together. That s why Small Groups exist to make these lifechanging rela onships relevant and accessible to you. Colossians 2:2 (KJV) says: That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together (united) in love, and a aining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ. Lincoln is already known for it s vibrant Small Group Ministry, but my goal for 2018 is that Small Groups will explode like never before with record numbers of people joining, and leading small groups, so that we may be knit together, one to another, in the body of Christ, and that we can grow in our faith together. joining or leading a small group. Leading a small group isn t about being perfect; it s about serving others by giving them a place to connect. Hos ng a group is simple choose a topic that interests you and select a me and loca on to share it with others. We can give you ideas, resources, and essen- al tools to make your small group successful. Look for the Small Group catalog later this month that will enable people to find your group. We believe lives are changed through groups by moving us one step closer to Christ, and as a small group leader you get to play an important role in that process. Not ready to lead a Small Group? That s okay! We have established groups and will help you find the one that s right for you! Find the right group to join, or register a new group, by contac ng Sandy at Knitting people together in the body of Christ and growing together Sharing life through community is part of our design, but meaningful rela onships aren t always easy to find. Make 2018 a great year filled with friendships, or at least that one vital friendship, by (209) 479-4141 or sandy@lincolnpres.org Rotary Read In Coming Next Month Coming up in February, we need someone willing to coordinate the sign ups for the Rotary Read In. If you would be willing to help with this impac ul program, please contact the office by January 10. Will you please read me a story? Page 3

We believe every marriage is worth saving, and every couple can experience the promise of a great marriage. Marriage 911 is here to help couples, or individuals, experience a lifechanging miracle personally and rela- onally, or at least help people to take a first step in that direc on. Have you ever asked yourself: "If God were to work a miracle in my marriage, and the miracle could be the magnitude of the par ng of the Red Sea, would I accept it?" Marriage 911 is a 12 week program mee ng Thursdays, 6:30-8:00pm, star ng January 11th con nuing through March. Child care will be provided. It is an opportunity for hus- bands and wives, whether together or individually, to hear from God's Word and from others struggling in their marriages, as well as wisdom from others who have been through it and have come out the other side. This program is for anyone and everyone. Membership or a endance at Lincoln Presbyterian Church is not a requirement, just a desire to grow in your personal walk with the Lord and in your marriage.
