The First Sunday of Lent Gn 9:8-15; Ps 25:4-9; 1 Pt 3:18-22; Mk 1:12-15 February 18, 2018 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Scrutinies by Fr. Peter Bosque... continued from... One of the critical aspects of the RCIA is the emphasis of faith as a journey of conversion, a metanoia ( turning around ) from being a child of this earth, to a disciple of the Lord by celebrating baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist... On the First Sunday of Lent, February 18 th, the catechumens (unbaptized) and candidates (our baptized brethren), will be presented to our Bishop in rites called the Rite of Election (for the catechumen) and Rite of Welcoming and Celebration of Continuing Conversion of Acceptance (for the baptized). This is a formal celebration in which the names of the adults in the presence of our Bishop, who represents the universal Church as the apostle of the local church! Our sisters and brothers will be SENT to this celebration, in what is called the Rite of Sending which we will happen before the parish community at the 5pm Mass, Saturday, February 17 th. During Lent, our elect and candidates prepare even more intensely to receive the sacraments of Baptism (if unbaptized), Confirmation and Eucharist. Our elect and candidates have the intention of achieving an intimate union of Christ and His Church and they are expected to participate in genuine self-knowledge and selfexamination, so to become more and more one like Christ, which involves a conversion from sin, and conforming their lives to Christ. (Imagine if it were true that we could say, they conformed their lives to how the fully-initiated Catholic lives! Which is a truth of our faith, since we are the Body of Christ, as St. Paul has taught us since the first century!)... more to follow...

Ministry Summary Deacon Patrick Wright Our family came to St. Therese from St. Pius X in Chula Vista approximately 13 years ago. We didn t move from our home in Chula Vista, but our younger daughter, Karina wanted to attend Confirmation and youth activities at St Therese, where our good friend was the youth minister and had a way of getting kids excited about their faith. Additionally, our older daughter Sarah helped out when she was at home during her semester breaks from college. We felt it was really important to attend Mass and serve as a family, so we registered at St. Therese with our pastor s blessing. We were predominantly youth Mass attendees, as that would give us the opportunity to be with our kids while serving others. We, along with other parents, provided meals and served them at youth nights, served as chaperones and adult leaders at many events, from youth nights, confirmation classes, retreats, many service projects, including several house builds in the impoverished colonias (neighborhoods) of Tijuana, Mexico. Frequently, many youth gatherings found their way to our home, where baked potato or nacho chip bars (building your own baked potato or nachos with your choice of toppings), Rice Krispy treats and gathering in and around the pool were the order of the day. At St. Pius, we had been involved with the youth and felt it was important to continue to volunteer and serve the youth, as there always seemed to be more things to do than there were available volunteers. Both my wife Elena and I had both served as Extraordinary ministers at St. Pius and I eventually also became a sacristan and acolyte, becoming more involved with the Mass. Elena and I really enjoyed serving and wanted to continue to serve at St. Therese. Very quickly, we both became Extraordinary ministers, serving primarily at the 5pm Sunday (youth) Mass. Elena, an avid reader, became a lector while I became a sacristan, setting up for the Mass. I really enjoyed assisting with youth ministry and as we grew to know both the kids and their parents, volunteering for the many events didn t seem like work. It was more like being with family. Elena and I felt called to do more, but what? Beginning at St. Pius, I felt a yearning in my heart, a call to serve at an even deeper level, the diaconate, but dismissed it. Life was already pretty busy and I didn t see myself as a worthy candidate. God had other plans.. More to follow
