The Amazing Parish Prayer Heavenly Father, We thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples. You have charged us through Your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world. Send Your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern Your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish. Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve You. We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance as we strive to bear witness to the Gospel and build an Amazing Parish. Amen

SACRAMENT PREPARATION S B Parents reques ng to have a child bap zed are invited to call the Parish Office at 715-384-9414. Father Berns will assist with bap sm prepara on and scheduling a date. S R Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:45 5:15 p.m. and by appointment. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent. S F E C Ongoing catechesis is essen al in the faith forma on of the youth of Our Lady of Peace Parish (OLP). Children must be enrolled con nually from the First Grade in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP s Religious Educa on Programs to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirma on. S M Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to mee ng with engaged couples to assist them in marriage prepara on. As this prepara on takes me, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8 12 months before the wedding. S A S If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anoin ng of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at the Parish Office at 715-384-9414. FROM THE PASTOR One of my favorite moments of the week is the Thursday morning Mass with the students of OLP intermediate school. It warms the heart to hear how enthusiastic they are when they sing, and I think their voices delight the ranks of heaven. I compliment them and ask them not to stop singing when they get into junior high and high school, which usually happens. Even in the high school seminary I attended, there were so few who sang at daily Mass. I was quite surprised and inspired, then, when I entered the college seminary and heard the strong voices of 50 men filling the chapel with song, prayers and praise of God. Imagine what Sunday Mass at OLP would be like if all of our parishioners would sing and pray like the school children. Perhaps that is part of what Jesus meant when he said we "must turn and become like little children in order to enter the kingdom of heaven." I've noticed that the majority of men don't bother to open a hymnal at Sunday Mass. And I see everything from the sanctuary. Most of the mouths are closed during any singing, including the Gloria. Friends, that should not be. It's disheartening when I see that, and so I find myself looking down at the floor or up to the ceiling a lot. We owe more than that to God and to each other. How many show up on Sunday without really being present? Sure, not everyone can sing like a Luciano Pavarotti, but that's not a reason to have your mouth closed while the Church enters its feeble participation in the chorus of angels and saints in the heavenly liturgy. Visitors and newcomers tell me often that they "like the feel" of our church. It would make my day for someone to walk out smiling on a Sunday morning, saying "I liked the volume. Yours, Fr. Berns A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, April 27 for Jacqueline (Jackie) Schlagenhaft Please remember her family in your prayers. Bear her gently to the Father s embrace to behold with joy our Savior s face until we meet again. NEW OLP PARISHIONERS To join the Our Lady of Peace Parish Community, please register at the Parish Office located at 510 S. Columbus Ave., at the Welcome Desk in church or call 715-384-9414. 2 WELCOME TO OUR LADY OF PEACE PARISH

PARISH NEWS The Mass Explained By Seminarian Arturo Vigueras The Eucharist continued Once the priest places the gifts of bread and wine on the altar, he then goes to the servers and washes his hands. The priest washes his hands as a sign of his spiritual cleansing and preparation for the great miracle that is about to take place. This part of the Mass comes directly from the Jewish rites of purification in the Temple and the Passover ritual. You see in the Jewish religion, cleansing with water for physical and spiritual purity was commanded by God in the Old Testament. For example, Moses bathed Aaron and his sons before their ordination as priests (Leviticus 8:6). Also in Jewish tradition, handwashing was very important. Jews would wash their hands when they would wake up in the morning by pouring water from a special vessel three times on each hand. This type of handwashing was said to remove evil spirits from ones fingers. The Jews also had many other ritual washings, such as, washing hands before prayer, washing hands before breaking bread, washing one s body before entering the Temple Mount. Ritual and physical cleansing were part of the ceremonies for many of the pagan religions of the ancient world. However, the Jews were, of all ancient peoples, the most aware of how sinful and how unclean they were before their God and how much they needed to be cleansed from their iniquities. This is evident from the prophet Isaiah where we read your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his [God s] face from you your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken lies and your tongue mutters wicked things. No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case with integrity they hatch the eggs of vipers and spin a spider s nest Their feet rush into sin their thoughts are evil thoughts; ruin and destruction mark their paths our offenses are many in God s sight and we acknowledge our iniquities (Isaiah 59:2-5,7,12). The priest washing his hands before the Eucharistic prayer is an act of humility and acknowledgment of the extreme sanctity and respect that should be afforded to God who is about to humble Himself by becoming physically present under the appearances of bread and wine. All of us should make a similar interior gesture of purification in our minds as we ready ourselves to welcome Christ as he becomes present in the gifts of bread and wine. Once the priest finishes washing his hands with extended hands, he invites the congregation in these words, Pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. All of us then responds, May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The response of the people helps us to remember that God provides us at Mass with a sacrifice which is His Own Son; however, at another level, God also asks us to make an interior sacrifice so that we can worship Him completely. Giving up something as a form of sacrifice helps to remember that we depend on God for everything rather than on material things that can often push God out of our hearts. After this the priest begins with the Prayer over the Gifts, this prayer is the center of the Mass and the heart of our faith. The words of this prayer change from Sunday to Sunday, however, the structure of the prayer remains the same and is as follows: 1. We call upon God to remember all the wonderful saving deeds of our history. 2. We recall the central event in our history, that is Jesus Christ and the memorial he left us on the night before he died and recall his passion, death, and resurrection. 3. After gratefully calling to mind the wonderful saving acts God has done for us in the past, we petition God to continue those deeds of Christ in the present. After the Prayer of the Gifts, the priest begins the Eucharistic prayer by saying with his hands extended, The Lord be with you. The priest through this invocation asks us if we are ready and willing to approach the table of the Lord and to renew our baptismal commitment by offering ourselves to God. Our response to this question is And with your spirit. This response back to the priest means, yes, we are ready in the same way by which the priest who is an ordained minister lives out his baptismal promises through his vocation to the priesthood. The next command that the priest gives us is Lift up your hearts to which we respond: We lift them up to the Lord. After preparing ourselves spiritually, such as cleaning our hearts and offering a sacrifice to God, we are ready to give our hearts to God in prayer. The last invocation that the priest says is Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. To which we respond, It is right and just. After recalling through the Prayer over the Gifts the most important events of salvation history and us recommitting ourselves to live out our baptismal promises, we give thanks to God which translates into the traditional Greek verbs which names the whole central action of the Mass as the Eucharist. Next week I will continue talking about the second half of the Eucharistic prayer. ADVERTISER OF THE WEEK GAFFNEY PLUMBING, INC. 851 S.
