Brazos Valley Emmaus Community October 2009 Newsletter De Colores! Volume 18, Number 3 October 2009 Community News by Nancy Goodell Greetings to the Community in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ It s October again and time to look toward a new year in the Brazos Valley Community. This is the time we elect new members to the Board of Directors and sadly say good-bye and thank you to some of our outgoing Board members. On behalf of the community I would like to thank the following individuals for their exemplary service to our community: Marlene Coffman has been in charge of our Candlelights which have been such a Spiritual happening, not only to the pilgrims but to the entire community. There s nothing like watching the faces of our pilgrims as they enter the chapel. Thanks, Marlene! Patrice Summerour has been responsible for Team Selection. Her committee meets to select the teams for the Walks collecting all of those applications and making a lot of phone calls. Patrice has done this with a spirit of love and prayer in putting tog ether the ones God is calling to serve. Thanks, Patrice. Dana Wacasy who stepped in to fulfill an unfinished term. Dana wears many hats and has served you faithfully as the Board Member who heads the Nomination committee. They are in charge of selecting the community members you vote for to fill the board. Sh e also is in charge of the Welcoming/Closing Committee who are there to greet you when you arrive at camp. In addition, Dana is in charge of Literature and Supplies overseeing the books provided for the pilgrims to purchase and making sure all of the markers and poster board is there for use during the Walk. You can see that she will be missed. Thanks, Dana! Ed Wetterman has filled several positions on the board. He has been in charge of Training and this year has been the one leading our Fourth Day Groups at the Gatherings. This has helped the Community get to know each other and taught us how to participate i n a Reunion Group. This is such a crucial part of one s Fourth Day. Ed has also been our Board secretary this year Thanks, Ed! These are the ones you will be voting to replace on the enclosed ballot... please prayerfully consider who God is calling to serve on your BV Emmaus Board and mail in your ballot. Your Board strives to serve you and continue to grow our Community! Also a great big thank you to Jeff Gage who has served as the Community Spiritual Director for the past three years. His Spiritu al direction for the Walks and Gatherings has been so uplifting to all in attendance. Thanks, Jeff! DeColores Nancy Goodell Community Lay Director Team Selection Application Our Next Walks The next Women s Walk #79 (Lay Director Debra Brantley) will be at Crossroads on April 8-11 and the next Men s Walk #80 (Lay Director Joddie Carlisle) will be at Crossroads on April 22-25 in Chriesman, Texas. Please prepare your Agape, pray, and come show your support and share the love of Christ with our Pilgrims. The BVEC Team Selection Committee is now accepting applications for the April 2010 Walks. Lay Directors for these Walks are Debra Brantley and Jodie Carlisle. Forms need to be completed and returned to the address listed on the form NLT Nov. 7th. Copies of the form may also be obtained on the web, at Gatherings and at Candlelight. For additional information, email Patrice Summerour at team_selection@bvemmaus.org.

Volume 18, Number 1 Did You Know Did you know it takes approximately 70 people to serve just one weekend Walk? Thirty-three people are needed to serve on the Inside and Outside Teams which requires a minimum of 3 days service. The BVEC Team Selection Committee is now accepting applications for the April 2010 Walks. Lay Directors for these Walks are Debra Brantley and Joddie Carlisle. To serve on one of these teams, please complete and submit the attached application to the address listed on the form NLT November 7th. Copies of the form may also be obtained on the web, at Gatherings and at Candlelight. For additional information, email Patrice Summerour at team_selection@bvemmaus.org. Page 2 If you re unable to get away for that amount of time but would like to serve, many opportunities still exist where you can volunteer for several hours and still receive credit for serving on an Outside Team. These include: working in the Kitchen (2 shifts daily for a total of 18 people); Facilities Set-up on Thursday (6 people) or Facilities Tear-down on Sunday (6 people); Welcoming Committee on Thursday evening (5 people); and Parking Attendants (2 each) for Arrival, Candlelight, and Closing. Each of these opportunities require a very minimal amount of your time and are vital to the Community s ability to proceed with a Walk. If interested in serving in one of these areas, please contact the following Board members: Kitchen: Jenny Beasley at 979-567-7974 or at info@crossroadsretreat.org Facilities Set-up/Tear-Down: Steve May at (979)778-0071 Welcoming Committee/Parking: Dana Wacasey at (979)693-5678 The 2009-2010 Brazos Valley Emmaus Board Lay Director: Nancy Goodell (713) 467-7021 Assistant Lay Director: Pat Baker (979) 567-0218 Spiritual Director: Jeff Gage (979) 822-1730 Treasurer: Marilyn Koch (979) 776-3552 Secretary: Ed Wetterman (979) 574-3410 Team Selection: Patrice Summerour (936) 878-1896 Nominations: Dana Wacasey (979) 693-5678 Reunion Groups & 4th Day: Ed Wetterman (979) 574-3410 Registrar: Robert Read (903) 626-4967 Welcoming/Closing: Dana Wacasey (979) 693-5678 Agape: Cindy Cross (979) 567-7650 Music/Entertainment: Arthur Averitt (979) 690-9440 Logistics, Transportation, Facility set-up/ breakdown: Steve May (979) 778-0071 Literature & Supplies: Dana Wacasey (979) 693-5678 Sponsor Hour: Linda Myers (979) 865-5863 Candlelight: Marlene Coffman (512) 898-1075 Gatherings: Sue Houseley (979) 865-3713 Prayer Chapel/Prayer Vigils: Marilyn Koch (979) 776-3552 Training: Pat Baker (979) 567-0218 Newsletter, Mail Outs: Robert Read (903) 626-4967 rdread@sbcglobal.net Web Administration, Design, Technology: Derek French (979) 739-7635

Team Selection Chair Thanks Committee Members Please extend your deepest appreciation I know they have mine--to the following Emmaus Community Members who have served faithfully and with a servant s heart for the past three years: Wayne and Carolyn Bush, Jeff Gage, Michael Koehn, Lynn Stutts and Judy Veale. Ya ll are the best! NEXT GATHERING November 7th at 5:00PM in the Fellowship Hall of First UMC Brenham. The Gathering will be preceded by Fourth Day Meeting for Walks 77 and 78 at 4:00PM. So, all you sponsors need to make every effort get your pilgrims to this very important meeting. BVEC Community Board Elections Choose five candidates from below, mark your ballot on the next page and mail in before November 15th Cindy Van Deventer I went on Walk #4 when the community was first beginning and we had to borrow everything we needed to put on an Emmaus Walk. It was an honor to be a part of the team that worked hard for the community to accumulate the needed items to host the Emmaus Walks. I've served on many walks over the years and in most capacities of a team. Recently serving as Lay Director of Walk #73, I'm very proud to be a member of this Body of Christ. I've been a member of FUMC Caldwell since 1987 and have served in many positions on the Church Council. My husband Daryl, went on Walk #5 and we have one son who is now at Texas Tech University, Guns Up Raiders. I believe I'm at a time in my life when I can commit to the large task of being a Board Member of the BVEC. Sam Labarbera I have received the many blessings of the Walk to Emmaus. I have served on several Walks and I believe in the work the Holy Spirit accomplishes through the Walk to Emmaus. I wish to assist on the board in order to share the spirit of service to the Pilgrims that have yet to experience the blessings of the Walk to Emmaus, and to all of those that work the Walks in all capacities. Beth Barnes I attended Walk #10 with BVEC in Palestine, TX in 1995. I have been an active member of the community ever since. Over the years I have sponsored many Pilgrims, served on numerous teams in a variety of positions, and just recently served as Lay Director for Women's Walk #77. I have witnessed the community's transition as they have moved toward following the Upper Room's model for the weekend. I attend First Baptist Church in Bryan where I am involved with the youth group and teach the 10th grade girls Sunday School.

Judith M. Ball I am an Associate Professor at Texas A&M University wherein my responsibilities encompass teaching, research and service. To translate, I teach undergraduate and graduate courses, go to a lot of meetings around campus and write a lot of grants and papers. I am currently a member of the Christian Faculty Network and have been since joining TAMU in 1997. I also serve as the faculty advisor to Freshman Leaders in Christ (FLIC), a group of 60+ students, who are primarily freshmen. My church home is in Conroe, Texas (Riverpointe Baptist Church) where I serve as the Sunday School Director, teach the young adult class, and serve on various committees. As you can see, I have taken the Emmaus philosophy to heart and am very active in my church. My Walk to Emmaus was walk #41, in the fall, 2001, right after the 9/11 tragedy. I found out later that the agape and decorations had been prepared way before 9/11, yet they were patriotic and the colors were red, white and blue. God is so awesome! I have a lasting reminder of 9/11 in my red, white and blue name tag. Since then, I have served as Assistant Table Leader (walk #49), Table Leader in three walks (walks #59, 67, 71), and have aided the outside team in day -long service. Lastly, I have given two lay talks (walks 59 and 71). The reason I would like to join the BVEC Board is to contribute to the ongoing ministries of the BVEC, which serves our community so well and provides a memorable weekend to Christians of different faiths. Doug Summerour I am a member of 1st United Methodist Church Brenham. I am married to Patrice and we have one son Nicholas age 10, (so we're really very young). I attended Walk 50 here in the Brazos Valley Community. I have served on the outside team several times, in the Prayer Chapel, and all the jobs on the conference room team including Lay Director for Walk #76. I want to serve on the board because I feel Emmaus saved my life, and this would be my way of giving back and fulfilling the Great Commission. Please select five (5) candidates by placing an (X) beside their names. Please Do NOT select more than five (5) Some of the candidates have submitted brief biographies beginning on the previous page. Cindy Van Deventer Sam Labarbera Beth Barnes Mail the completed ballot to: BVEC PO Box 10491 College Station, TX 77845 Judith Ball Doug Summerour Mark Vziobala Deborah Hildebrand
