PENTREF BAPTIST CHAPEL The Chapel at the Heart of Newbridge HE IS RISEN Easter Sunday 1 st April The Newsletter Of Newbridge-On-Wye Baptist Church April 2018

FROM THE MINISTER The empty cross, whether it is like the picture on the front cover or the one on top of a hot-cross bun, is one of the symbols of Easter. Another symbol of Easter (that you don t normally see on cakes) is that of the Empty Tomb. It is odd that the triumph of the One who said that He had Come to give fullness of life should be remembered by things that are empty. The resurrection of Jesus that Christians around the world will be celebrating this coming Easter Sunday is the final triumph of Jesus. The Christians belief in the eye-witness accounts of over five-hundred people who said that they had seen the risen Jesus, is central to their faith. The resurrection of Jesus is his final triumph over sin and death. The point of the resurrection is not just an historical fact, but a belief that he who was raised from the dead is still alive today. Not in the sense that he walks the earth in the same way that he did in the forty days after His resurrection, but in the sense that he reigns with His Father in Heaven, and that by the power of His Holy Spirit he is at work in the lives of people today. Other symbols, of Easter, eggs and daffodils, remind us of the promise of new life that Jesus offers to all those who will follow him. If you want to know more about the message of Jesus, then please watch the DVD that comes with this newsletter. You may even want to sign up for the Christianity Explored course that will be run in the Chapel shortly after Easter. More about that further in the Newsletter. May you all have a happy Easter. Steve

COFFEE MORNING First Wednesday of the month 10:30 12ish The next Coffee Morning is on Wednesday April 4 th We will supply the coffee and tea the cakes and biscuits and you can come along to supply the good-humoured company. No charge but donations gratefully received in aid of: Friends of Newbridge-On-Wye School Bible Study On Tuesday mornings a group of us get together to look at a particular part of the Bible. This is an informal gathering where all are encouraged to take part. We are not a bunch of academics debating the finer points of a text, but a group of people who want to hear what God has got to say to us through His word. In April we will be continuing to look at the gospel of John. If you would like to come along we will be meeting on Tuesday 10 th & 24 th at 10:30am, in the Baptist Church hall. A few of us go to lunch in Rhayader after the meeting. You would be more than welcome to join us. (2 courses for only 5.50)

THE MONTH AT PENTREF Clive Barrett Due to the heavy snowdrifts before the first and third Sundays of March the morning services on those days were held at Cartref, both being services of communion. The early evening services on both the above Sundays were cancelled because of the adverse weather. At the third Sunday service Rev Steve continued his studies in Psalm 119, concentrating on verses 65 72, with the main points being, afflictions are not sent by God, making use of one's talents in the service of God, whatever others might think or say about us. The monthly Coffee Morning was held as usual on the first Wednesday, with donations towards the total for the present local cause of Friends of Newbridge Primary School. The total needed is expected to be reached at next month's Coffee Morning. On the second Sunday (Mother's Day) Monica O'Dea was welcomed to the pulpit. (at present Monica is undertaking training for the Presbyterian ministry, and her tutor from Cardiff was in attendance.) She spoke about Mother's Day, and linked the above to the feeding of the five thousand. Very appropriately Monica spoke about the recent book written by Rev Ifor Williams, Open Heart and recommended it. The connection to appropriateness was because Rev Ifor was the guest speaker at the early evening service. He took his text from Exodus 20 verses 1 19, which details some of the main points of the Ten Commandments. Rev Ifor particularly referred to respecting and obeying your parents by honouring your father and mother. This naturally led to seeing matters from a Mother's Day viewpoint, namely mothers bringing their children up meaningfully. He mentioned the fact that Mary knew baby Jesus was so special, and spoke about his relationship with his mother and father. We should honour our mothers, they believe or believed in us. Finally we are called to be spiritual parents, and also honour our mothers and fathers all through life. On Palm Sunday members of the chapel gathered with those from All Saints to share a Communion Service at All Saints, after the service members of both congregations paraded through the village, waving their Palm Crosses, until they reached Pentref where there was a short time of praise and worship before refreshments were enjoyed by all.

The Men s Fellowship The next meeting will be on Tuesday April 17 th At 10:30am Speaker Ray Price Who will be talking on the subject of: POSTCARDS Thursday Afternoons 2:00pm 4:00pm Do you, paint, draw, sculpt, knit, crochet, do macramē, or anything else creative? If you do, you would be more than welcome to come along and join the group. Come along to share your skills in a group where we learn from each other. Refreshments provided. MARCH IN NEWBRIDGE Clive Barrett NEWBRIDGE POST OFFICE & STORES GREAT SUCCESS IN WINNING THE WELSH COUNTRYSIDE ALLIANCE VILLAGE SHOP/ POST OFFICE AWARDS 2017. The major news in the village during the month was surely the above. On the first Wednesday of March, Daniel and his mother Adele, travelled to the Countryside Alliance Awards ceremony at the National Assembly in Cardiff. To the Jones families utter amazement they only went and WON the Village Shop/ Post Office category for Wales. All the members of the local popular business family say they are over the moon with the result. However they were first to admit that but for the community of Newbridge on Wye, and all their loyal customers from near and far, in fact if it wasn't for YOU (the local residents) they wouldn't have had the opportunity to have gone to Cardiff to receive this award. So they would most sincerely THANK YOU/ DIOLCH their customers. That evening the local Post Office & Stores in common with the excellent service they are noted to provide locally, was open as usual, with remaining family members Jeff and Carys staffing the shop! The next stop for the Jones family is the dizzy heights of the England and Wales national awards at the House of Lords in London on April 25 th, when they will be competing as one of eight area finalists covering the above two countries. LOCAL COMMUNITY SPIRIT SHOWS THROUGH DURING TWO HEAVY SNOWFALLS IN MARCH. During the two recent extreme snowfalls conditions were soon improved on at least two estates in Newbridge and possibly other parts of the village. This was as a result of residents from both the Gwaryfordd and Meadowlands areas of the village moving some of the heavy snowfalls to enable several less able inhabitants to move around quicker and sooner than they would have been able to do otherwise. I am sure that local residents would like to thank most sincerely the able bodied and thoughtful neighbours who came to their aid at a time of great need.

Open Doors Prayer Afternoon Tuesday April 24th 2.30-4pm St Francis Centre All are very welcome to come along to this interesting afternoon, when we watch short films, listen to interviews with persecuted Christians from around the world, pray (there is no expectation of praying out loud if you prefer quiet prayer), decorate and write cards of encouragement and enjoy refreshments and chat. This free, comprehensive guide to the top 50 countries where faith costs the most is an ideal way to inspire prayer and action on behalf of our persecuted brothers and sisters. Let Louise know (822615) if you would like to have a copy. USED POSTAGE STAMPS Pentref Chapel collects used postage stamps which are sold to support the work of the Leprosy Mission. The Leprosy mission works in countries all over the world bringing support to those who are suffering from leprosy.
