Reform Jewish Education Goals The goal of Jewish Education within the Reform Movement is the deepening of Jewish experience and knowledge for all liberal Jews, in order to strengthen faith in God, love of Torah, and identification with the Jewish people through involvement in the synagogue and participation in Jewish life. We believe that Judaism contains answers to the challenges and questions confronting the human spirit, and that only a knowledgeable Jew can successfully discover these answers. Youth & Education Committee Programs for children in Religious School and Youth Activities are aligned under the direction of the Youth & Education Committee (YEC). The goals of this committee include: Advocate for the children of Temple Beth El. Set goals and agenda for future education and youth. Insure that necessary funds are available for top quality programs. Instill a love of Judaism in our children and their families. The YEC supports the vision for our Religious School and Youth Activities, reviews and determines policies, recommends the budget, and acts as a sounding board for new ideas and programs. Temple members interested in serving on this committee should contact Karen Hoffman, VP of Youth and Education, Shari Schwamm, Chair or Robin Eisenberg, Reisenberg@tbeboca.org, Director of Jewish Learning and Living. Our Faculty Our faculty consists of temple members and non-members affiliated with the Reform Movement and other branches of Judaism. Some teach as a vocation, all teach at Temple Beth El as an avocation. Some are parents, yet all are students. We are proud of the respect all of our professionals have won in the TBE and larger communities, and we are equally grateful to have them on our team. Our staff is open to your involvement, and in fact, sees your family s participation as integral to our goal of creating Jewish memories and experiences from which your child can draw as he/she grows into an adult faced with choices of his/her own. We invite you and your child to share ideas with our faculty all year long.

The curriculum is designed to engage the student, allowing him/her to discover an individual sense of Jewish self. In addition to classroom learning, art, computers, drama, library, and music enhance the learning process. Kindergarten is the time for discovery- Discovery about the holidays, the synagogue, the beginning of the Torah and God. First Grade is a time of exploring- Exploring Shabbat, being Jewish and our Matriarchs and Patriarchs. Second Grade utilizes the Chai curriculum from the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). It is organized around 3 pursuits: Torah, Avodah and Gemilut Hasadim, which translate into study, worship, and acts of loving-kindness in addition to an introduction of Israel. Third Grade focuses on the Ten Commandments and Israel. Fourth Grade explores the Jewish life cycle. These students also learn how Jewish values help us become menshen (good people). Fifth Grade studies Jewish History focusing on prophets and their wisdom and culminates in a campaign of Run a Prophet for President. Sixth Grade is an opportunity for the students to explore their relationship with God and Israel. Project Based Learning: In 3rd & 5th grade students will be part of a project based learning initiative. Project Based Learning (PBL) uses high quality student projects and a process of peer review to engage students with the material while also teaching them the Jewish values of community and kindness. Hebrew Curriculum Kindergarten and First Grade begins with an introduction to Hebrew letters and language with an emphasis on daily and holiday vocabulary through hands-on experiences. How can I help my child if I can t read Hebrew? Did you know Temple Beth El offers adult Hebrew classes and other educational programs? Contact the Clergy Office for course times. Second Grade is the start of the building blocks of language. Students are introduced to all of the Hebrew letters and vowels, and by the end of the year are able to decode simple words and/or phrases. Third Grade concentrates on learning the names and sounds of the Hebrew letters and vowels. By the end of the year, students are able to read basic prayers. Fourth Grade through Sixth Grade concentrates on reading and comprehension of basic blessings and the Shabbat morning service. Online Integrated Second through Sixth Grade Hebrew Curriculum has an online component through Behrman House s Online Learning Center (OLC). The OLC is used to track student progress through both in-class enrichment, and at-home support. appropriate class placement. Classes are available for students who need additional help, as well as those with particular learning needs. We are happy to meet with you to discuss any specific requirements your child may have. PRAYER SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Emphasis is on the development of comprehension and mastery of the prayers that make up our worship service. Students in Grades 4 through 6 use our temple prayer book. PRACTICE: Each child is expected to practice reading aloud at home 20 minutes each day. PARTICIPATION AND REINFORCEMENT: Every class is given the honor of participating in leading a Friday Night Shabbat Service with the congregation. This is an essential part of our Hebrew program. Please make every effort to attend, and encourage your child s participation in this service. Dates are found in this handbook for your convenience in advance planning. EVALUATION: Hebrew students in grades 3 through 6 will have ongoing evaluations. Emails and progress reports will reflect your child s progress based on achievement of goals covered by the class. Please feel free to contact your child s teacher at any time should you have any questions or concerns. CLASS PLACEMENT: Students beyond third grade who are new to Temple Beth El should make an appointment with the Director of Jewish Learning and Living to determine

Derech Torah 7th Grade Our program gives students credits for many activities they already do that are building their Jewish identity. Seventh grade students will attend the core class every other Tuesday at TBE s Beck Family Campus in the fall and TBE s Main Campus in the spring from 7:00 8:30 PM. During this time they will focus on their Jewish relationship with their community, themselves and with God. The remainder of their experience will be earned through a plethora of other options including, but not limited to, classes at both campuses, independent studies, TBE and federation events. The options are only limited by a student s imagination! If you have an idea for a way to earn credit please be in touch with Gavin Hirsch, Assistant Director of Jewish Learning and Living, to discuss the options! 8th and 9th Grades These students meet every other Tuesday evening from 7:00 8:30 PM on TBE s Beck Family Campus in the fall and TBE s Main Campus in the Spring. Each session is broken into two 45 minute blocks. One block is a student s major which they choose at the beginning of the year and they stay in for the duration of the year. The second block is a student s elective class which the student chooses and which changes every 4 sessions. All 7th 10th Grade Students Students are welcome to join their friends for a community dinner that begins at 6:30 PM just before classes! Retreats for 8th and 9th Grade In addition to Tuesday night class, all 8th and 9th graders are expected to attend one Derech Torah retreat. There are two possible retreat dates to choose from (November 8 10 and April 4-6, location TBD.) Those who want to participate in more than one retreat may do so at an additional charge. Please note that retreat money is non-refundable since we must prepay the hotels/resorts in advance for the weekends. All accommodations are quad occupancy. The rooms have two double beds. There must be a minimum of 20 participants signed up for a retreat date in order for that retreat to take place. In order to attend a retreat, the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. Confirmation 10th Grade Confirmation is a religious experience during which students affirm their commitment to Judaism as their cultural and religious identity. The Confirmation class will explore contemporary and relevant issues through the lens of the Ten Commandments. In addition, students will explore American- Jewish history by tracing the roots of their own family history. The vehicle for communicating the knowledge and feelings about being Jewish is the Confirmation Service, which students create as their commitment to the covenant with the Jewish people. This service is written by members of the class in consultation with the Rabbis and Educators. Confirmation students will be expected to choose between attending every Tuesday from 7:00-8:30 PM at the TBE Main Campus or every Sunday from 12:00-1:30 PM at the TBE Beck Family Campus. The Sunday option is intended for students who have serious conflict with the Tuesday schedule. Confirmation students may occasionally substitute classes at either location Confirmation Retreat The feeling of community, as well as respect for self and others as people and Jews, are integral parts of our Religious School objectives. The Confirmation Class retreat weekend will be scheduled with these objectives specifically in mind. The Confirmation Retreat is a requirement for the celebration of Confirmation. In the event that a student is unable to attend, an alternative academic project and makeup retreat is required, which must be approved by the clergy. In order to attend the retreat, the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. Date: October 25-27 Location: Vero Beach Sports Village Confirmation Service Attendance Another requirement for the celebration of Confirmation is attendance at a minimum of ten Shabbat or Festival Services. They may also be attended at either Orthodox or Conservative synagogues or at another Reform synagogue. Your attendance should be recorded on the weekly sign-in sheets outside the sanctuary. Open Conversations P tichtah Parents join their 8th - 12th graders twice during the year during regularly scheduled class nights to listen and learn together. Prominent speakers will present their ideas and start a conversation about topics crucial to teens spiritual, emotional and physical well being. Then parents have the opportunity to continue the conversation in the car ride home and beyond! (This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Jewish Federation of SPBC/JJCF.)

Journey Through Judaism 11th & 12th Grade - Offered At Temple Beth El Main Campus Only This program is exclusively for 11th and 12th grade students. The first half of the year is in preparation for the Los Angeles* trip. The second half of the year will be largely determined by the student s interest. Students MUST attend sessions on a regular basis in order to be eligible for the Los Angeles trip! This class meets once a month on Tuesday from 7:00PM-8:30PM at the TBE Beck Campus in the fall. Together with teens from Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach, we will journey to Los Angeles to understand how power is distributed in America, learn why the students need to care about the disparity of power in America and why our Jewish past commands us to care about the less fortunate, discover how we have the power to create change. In order to attend this trip, the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. Cost, itinerary and deposit information will be available during the first week of class. This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Jewish Federation of SPBC/JJCF. Trip Highlights (January 16-20) Tour of Paramount Studios Explore the Museum of Tolerance/Holocaust Exhibit Shabbat Live with Craig Taubman The Grove and Venice Beach Tour USC and Hebrew Union College Compare and Contrast Beverly Hills and South Central LA Special Needs At Temple Beth El, we pride ourselves in creating a program that is open to all individuals and believe that every child is entitled to a Jewish education. We have established a program to help students with special learning needs in the area of Hebrew leading to the celebration of Bar or Bat Mitzvah. If your youngster would benefit from an individualized learning plan, please contact Robin Eisenberg so that an appropriate individualized educational plan can be developed to insure your child has a meaningful and rewarding educational and social experience. Independent Study There are students who, from time to time, are unable to attend the regularly scheduled educational program for their grade. If your family has a conflict it doesn t mean your child cannot participate meaningfully in his/her Jewish education. Please contact the office to speak with the Director of Jewish Learning and Living so we can develop a program with your family s needs in mind. Family Education Family Education at Temple Beth El is an opportunity to learn, grow, share and experience the joy of Jewish education together with your children. Both children and parents will come to TBE s Main Campus on their grades assigned Sunday. During that session the family will take part in a shared interactive lesson with time also scheduled for the parents to learn from a member of our clergy team. The learning experience always reflects the curriculum that is being learned in the classroom. This program happens in place of your child s regular class that Sunday. It is our expectation that all families will participate and we plan and order supplies accordingly. If you have a concern please be in touch. Please see the school calendar for your child s scheduled date. Email reminders will be sent closer to the date.

Youth Groups Temple Beth El provides opportunities for informal experiences for children in grades K-12. Through youth groups, social action projects and social events we continue to help our youth find ways to spend quality time with their Jewish peers. Youth group events will be held on our Temple Beth El Main Campus and on our Temple Beth El Beck Family Campus. Transportation will be provided between the two campuses. Tzedakah Giving comes from the heart. In accordance with Jewish tradition, we ask each family to teach children to set aside a certain monetary contribution each week for Tzedakah. Tzedakah will be collected each week on Sunday. Bar / Bat Mitzvah Program Prerequisite: Religious School Education All students are required to successfully complete 4 years of Hebrew and religious education or its equivalent prior to the celebration of Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Included in the four year Religious School requirement is the satisfactory completion of all academic work and regular attendance. At the age of thirteen, the student is barely able to grasp the true importance and significance of Jewish teaching. Therefore, students must be enrolled and have regular attendance during the school year of Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and are expected to continue through Confirmation and Journey Through Judaism in 11th and 12th Grade. We look forward to partnering with our parents in communicating this expectation from the beginning of your child s Religious School enrollment. Requesting Dates Date Assignment Dates may be requested beginning in January three years prior to Bar/Bat Mitzvah year. For example, beginning in January 2014 requests for calendar year 2017 will be accepted. Dates are officially assigned during the summer of each year, two and one-half years in advance of the upcoming calendar year. Upon acceptance of the assigned date, a non-refundable $100 deposit will be required to secure the date. The deposit will be applied to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah fee. In order to be assigned a date, the student must be registered in religious school and the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. NOTE: Those requesting Havdalah services will be required to continue their celebration at Temple Beth El with our in-house caterer, Chez Gourmet www.chezgourmettbe.com. Club Rishon K through 2nd Grade $75 membership for TBE members. Club Rishon is for our youngest Religious School students. We meet 4 times per year at the Beck Family Campus on Sundays from 12-2:30PM. Transportation is always provided for those who attend the Main Campus. Events will be social in nature and will always include a Jewish theme. You must be a TBE member in order to participate in Club Rishon. Club Kitanim 3rd and 4th Grade $120 membership for TBE members $175 membership for non-tbe members Club Kitanim meets once a month from 12-2:30 PM. The events will be held on our Temple Beth El Main or Beck Family Campus, except for the end of the year pool party. Events always include lunch and a program with a Jewish theme. Club Kitanim allows for an informal environment where the children can interact outside the classroom with other Jewish youth. Club Kitanim is committed to providing a safe, fun-filled place for children to make lasting friendships. Club Chaverim 5th and 6th Grade $150 membership for TBE members $200 membership for non-tbe members Club Chaverim meets once a month and is designed especially to meet the needs of our 5th and 6th graders. Club Chaverim offers a great place to make new friends and reconnect with old ones. In-temple events are free of charge to all members. Out-of-temple events such as bowling, roller skating, movies, Theme Parks and more have a nominal fee. By providing fun filled events and trips, we hope to help with the transition through middle school and pre B nai Mitzvah years. 2013-2014 BOFTY Board Members Advisor Jules Wolfberg President Rachel Solomon Programming VP Ari Levin Social Action VP Amanda Shore Religious & Cultural VP Daniel Beckerman Communications VP Carly Mackler Membership VP Dara Unger 12th Grade Rep Isaac Broad 11th Grade Rep Jordan Brown 10th Grade Rep Marissa Shulman 9th Grade Rep Ellie Solomon

Club Chai 7th and 8th Grade $150 membership for TBE members $200 membership for non-tbe members The goal of Club Chai is to offer a place where our youth from the community can gather in a social setting for fun, learning and leadership opportunities. By participating in Club Chai students will gain a greater appreciation of Judaism by making lasting friendships and gaining skills that will enable them to become more effective leaders. Meeting monthly allows us to offer a taste of how Judaism can fit into our everyday life. All Club Chai events are offered at a discounted rate, with membership helping to offset the cost of Orlando overnights and day trips. Events range from in-temple movie night to weekend theme park outings. We hope that you will encourage your teen to join and take part in the exciting events Club Chai has to offer. BOFTY-Boca s Original Federation Of Temple Youth, 9th Through 12th Grade $175 membership for TBE members $275 membership for non-tbe members BOFTY is Temple Beth El s answer to Senior Youth Group. Assistants can help in the office or in the classroom. They can also help with computer and music. All assistants must be enrolled in and attending Derech Torah, Confirmation, Journey Through Judaism, or an approved independent study program. We have found these young people to be wonderful resources and excellent assets as well as role models for younger students. Both campuses will have Teacher Assistants in K-6th grade classrooms. Contact Jules Wolfberg for more information at jwolfberg@tbeboca.org Shir Joy. 3rd thru 6th Graders Offered at the Temple Beth El Main Campus and the Temple Beth El Beck Family Campus Like to sing? Enjoy making noise? We ll teach you to make lots of noise and not get in trouble. Come to Shir Joy Sunday during Religious School with Lori Shapiro and see how!!! $25 to join. Contact Nina Finkel for more information at Nfinkel@tbeboca.org. Shir Ruach In 2009, Temple Beth El received a Legacy Heritage Foundation Grant which enabled us to create Shir Ruach, a teen song leader s group comprised of 15 teens who perform and regularly lead services at TBE. Come to Shir Ruach with Lori Shapiro and see how it s done!!! Contact Nina Finkel for more information at Nfinkel@tbeboca.org.

We have two options for drop off and pick up. At the beginning of the year, we ask that you notify the school office and your child as to where you want to pick them up to avoid confusion and possible tears. At Temple Beth El Main Campus: North Lot Car Pool. Parents are asked to stay in their car to proceed through the designated car pool line. South Lot Park and Walk. Parents are asked to park their car and proceed to their child s classroom. It is EXTREMELY important that the south lot is not used for car pool. This is for the safety of all of our children. At Temple Beth El Beck Family Campus: We have two options for drop off and pick up everyday that we have Religious School. Car Pool - Parents are asked to stay in their car to proceed through the designated car pool line. Park and Walk - Parents are asked to park their car and proceed to their child s classroom. High Holiday Youth Programs Offered on our Temple Beth El Main Campus Only Kindergarten thru 5th grades Thanks to the generosity of Women of Reform Judaism and Temple Brotherhood we are proud to offer our High Holy Days Youth program that will give your child the opportunity to have a wonderful, enriching, hands-on High Holy Day experience. This program will be offered at the Temple, and will start and finish simultaneous to adult morning worship services. This program does not replace the family services or youth services, but is an additional experience for your child/ren. In order to properly staff this program, advance registration is a must. The cost is $5.00 per child, per program. School Policies And Procedures Registration, Admission Policy Our Religious School program begins with children entering kindergarten. (For younger siblings, we also have an Early Childhood program for Together Time through Pre-Kindergarten. Contact the School Office for details.) Registration takes place each spring. Families with children in Kindergarten through Grade Four may register for school as non-members for one year at an increased tuition. Traffic Patterns And Parking Health and Safety are our number one priority. During our drop-off and dismissal hours, it is with your safety in mind that we urge you to cease from using your cell phones while driving your vehicle in our parking lot and in the car pool line. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in the very important matter. Please follow directions and be courteous to our teachers as they staff the parking lot. They are there to ensure the children s safety. Also, as appealing as it might be, TBE policy states that students may not play on our playground at dismissal, even under the supervision of a parent. Dress Code When your child dresses for Religious School, their choice of clothing should reflect the value of B tzelem Elohim, that we are created in God s image. In an effort to create an atmosphere of kedusha, or distinctiveness, while we are studying Torah and prayer, the following clothing is not appropriate and should not be worn to class at any time: torn jeans, short shorts or cut-offs, t-shirts with slogans of any kind, halter tops or bare midriffs, or shirts with spaghetti straps. Attendance At Religious School Your child s regular attendance is one of the most important factors determining the success of his/her educational experience, as well as that of the entire class. While students are expected to make up work in the event of an absence, students who do not meet proficiency requirements due to excessive absence will not be promoted to the next grade. Lack of proficiency in Hebrew may also affect the Bar/Bat Mitzvah process. Excessive absence can be made up by completing missed assignments to the satisfaction of the teacher and/or Director of Jewish Learning and Living and/or by hiring a tutor (at the parents expense) to cover material missed. As excessive tardiness also affects your child s learning experience, please make every effort to drop him or her off on time. Please discuss extenuating circumstances that will affect your child s attendance with the Director of Jewish Learning and Living.

Students attending Shabbat and festival services beyond stated expectations will be honored at the end of the year. It is the students responsibility to sign in at services in order to receive credit. Credit for services at other synagogues is also given. Please contact the school office to log a service attended at another temple. Appropriate Behavior Just as is expected in any school setting, we will treat each student with respect for his/her individuality. We expect students and parents to show the same respect to administration, teachers, fellow students, and school staff at the temple. We will not tolerate disruption to the classroom or destructive behavior on any school campus. Parental cooperation is essential in assuring your child s success in Religious School. We will contact you if your child s behavior is not acceptable. Service Expectations As part of the education process, worship experiences are considered an integral component of each child s experience. We hope that by the time our children reach adulthood, they will have developed the spiritual openness and the prayer skills, which enable them to find meaning and value in the Jewish worship service. Credit will be given for all services including Friday nights at 6:00 PM and/or 7:30 PM; Saturdays at 9 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 6 PM; all festivals (evening and morning). Check your school calendar, website and Chronicle for exact weekly times. Unfortunately, we are unable to record High Holy Day services due to multiple locations and service times. Worship services are held at TBE s Main Campus. Each student will be responsible for recording attendance in the sign-in notebook in the foyer. The school office will track attendance. The following expectations have been approved by the Youth and Education Committee: Kindergarten to Grade 2: 4-6 services Grade 3 to 5: 6-8 services Grade 6 to 9: 8-10 services Confirmation Grade 10: 10 or more services Visitors In Our School Temple Beth El encourages parents to take an active interest in school. You should feel free to visit the school and to observe classes. We ask parents to comply with the following rules, which pertain to such visits. Parents are asked to call the Director of Jewish Learning and Living prior to a visit. There are certain times when a class visit is inappropriate due to special programming or particular curricular needs. If a conference is desired with a particular teacher, please arrange for it in advance. It is not appropriate to begin a discussion when the teacher is beginning class, leaving school or taking the class to an activity. All visitors are asked to check in at the school office so that we can monitor our campus security. The school realizes that many times students would like to bring friends to visit school and attend classes. Our program is designed to build a sense of community in the classroom and outside guests are a disruption. Should a particular need arise, visitors will be admitted to class only when requests are initiated by the parent to the Director of Jewish Learning and Living prior to the intended visit. Should friends wish to inquire about Religious School or temple membership, please have them contact Membership Services at 561-391-8900 for an appointment and tour.
