Words from Our Pastor Bob Mitchell Volume 5, Issue 9 September 2017 Important to Note: Awana begins Spiritual Renewal Weekend Men s Lunch Growth Groups begin Love Stockton Recently, I mentioned in a message that our oldest son loves fast cars. His birthday was last week. He splurged in signing up for a car rally from Malibu to Monterey. So he and his family piled into their little sporty Porsche and joined other little sporty cars to attend Monterey s Car Week. They invited us to come over and join them for a day. I was absolutely clueless about the scale and extravagance of what we were going to experience. We saw over a hundred exotic cars. In addition to many one-of-a -kind priceless antiques, rich spectators drove their expensive cars to show off. Thousands of Porsches, Bentleys, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces, and McLarens. Some of these newer cars were priced in the millions of dollars. As a part of this Monterey Car Week, various luxury sport car makers hosted events where they allowed people to get up close to these speed-machines, and sign up for a test drive. (Let s not talk about the top speed our son reached on a two lane road test-driving a highend sports machine!) At these events, I learned that each car-maker was keen to not simply relay facts about their cars (horsepower, 0-60 in seconds), but also tell the story behind their particular brand; the circumstances of their beginnings, races won, engineering advances they accomplished, etc. I walked away impressed not only by sleek speed, but by the human stories behind the machines. This month we re beginning a series that proclaims that we are masterpiece designed creations of God. He has a story that He invites each of us to weave our individual stories into. He has shaped us as unique works, endowed with spiritual gifts, particular temperaments, individual histories, beautiful opportunities and specific relationships and resources. We ve designed this seven week series to be a great invitation tool. I invite you to invite others to join you not only Sunday morning for worship but also to join a mid-week Growth Group that will flesh out what we hear on Sundays. I can t remember being more excited about an up-coming series! Anticipating God s work among us this Fall, I am privileged to be, Your Pastor, Bob Pastor Matt Kirkland September 8, 9, & 10 will be our 4th Annual Spiritual Renewal Weekend. This year we are very blessed to hear from Pastor Manny Fernandez! Dr. Fernandez is the President and CEO of World Link Ministries. He has traveled the world spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and this weekend he will bring a message of hope from scriptures. Manny s wife Glenda will join him, and we look forward to meeting her after hearing from Manny for so many years. Following the Renewal Weekend, we will start our All Church Study. An all Continued on page 2

Pastor Matt Kirkland (continued from page 1) church study implies we want everyone to be a part of Sunday mornings as Pastor Bob will share a message from the series that will then be studied more in depth in all of our Growth Groups. The study kicks off on September 17, with groups starting that week. I know many of you are in groups, but if not, we have open groups for you to join during this 7 week study. The theme of the study is called My S.T.O.R.Y. and encourages us to look at our own stories in light of our spiritual gifts, our temperament, our opportunities, our relationships and resources, and finally our yearnings. We all have a story, so I hope you ll join us to look more deeply at our story and see how God wants to use our stories and join Him in His Grand Story. This is an exciting season in the life of our church! Grace and peace, Pastor Matt From Pastor Fred Jantz THE MISSIONARIES ARE COMING/GOING!! Leith and Carol Fujii, missionaries to Thailand, will be with us on Sunday morning September 17. They have had changes in how they are reaching out in their ministry. It will be fresh information for us all on how we partner with them. Jay Neuharth will be here on November 5. He serves the Chicago area with the goal of mobilizing 20 something students to reach their generation for Christ. He is with the Navigators. Emily Ferguson left for training and service to NE Asia with CRU. We met with her at our August 8 Mission team meeting. We are supporting her as a church and as individuals. We prayed for her and her venture of faith in obedience to her Lord. Kaben Kramer shared his work with us in India - Global Fellowship. Growing opposition is there from the Hindu political leadership. But even in the face of persecution, the message of hope and life continues to bear fruit. Pray for his family as they deal with the great physical challenges for their 4 year old daughter Eisley. May God grant much strength and grace to them. Thank you to all of you for supporting LPC ministry. 10% of our annual budget goes to the support of missions - locally and world wide. We have a great team of people who are serving the Lord on the front lines of need. We partner with them by financial support, prayer, communication, and lots of love. As you pray... please pray for them. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men." 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6 The Deacons deliver floral arrangements or plants to members who have been hospitalized. When a member or family member has passed away we deliver flowers or donate to the charity of their choice. For newborn babies or newly adopted children we provide a rosebud to display at the front of the sanctuary. We thank you for your continued support to these and other important ministries. Wednesday Evenings 6:00 pm: A continuing book by book journey through the Bible. Led by Ed and Denise Miller, Fireside Room. You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending. C S Lewis Security Reminder Praying for the peace and prosperity of Stockton should be a part of every believer s daily prayer time. Otherwise, how will the city ever change for the good? Unfortunately, churches are considered easy targets for vandalism, property damage, and theft. A big THANK YOU to our volunteers who patrol the LPC parking lot & church grounds during regular church services. In addition to prayer, there are some practical things you can do to avoid becoming the victim of property theft, especially when it comes to having your vehicle broken into: 1. Don t leave valuables in your car, even if they are out of sight. This includes sunglasses, cell phones, GPS devices, electronic mounting devices, chargers, cables and accessories, books, Bibles, gym bags, etc. 2. Don t leave your house keys or your garage door opener in your vehicle. After breaking into your vehicle, any thief can easily gain access to your home with these items. 3. Don t leave mail in your car as it provides your personal information to a thief, making it much easier to steal your identity. 4. Don t keep your vehicle registration or insurance card in the vehicle. A thief can use your registration to make a fake title and potentially get a title loan against your vehicle. 5. Always lock your car, roll up your windows, close your sunroof, and activate your car alarm if you have one.
