PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ Today we celebrate a very important feast today in the Church calendar, the Solemnity of the Epiphany. On this day we commemorate the three wise men s visit to the baby Jesus (in the Western Church the wise men are tradi onally known by the names Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar). They presented Jesus with gi s of gold, frankincense and myrrh. There are different theories behind the meaning of these gi s, but they are generally understood as follows: (1) Gold symbolizes the kingship of Christ, (2) Frankincense symbolizes Christ s priestly nature (incense is some mes used at Mass as a sign of our prayers rising to God), and (3) Myrrh, an embalming ointment, symbolizes Christ s suffering and death (as His body would be anointed before His burial). It is from this ac on of the wise men bringing gi s to Christ that we have the tradi on of exchanging gi s on Christmas (this is also why, in some countries today, gi s are not exchanged on Christmas Day, but on this day, the feast of the Epiphany). This weekend we can now see the figures of the wise men right next to our church s na vity scene, as they present these gi s to the baby Jesus (prior to this we had them located at the le side altar, since they were s ll traveling to Bethlehem). And speaking of traveling, I know that some parishioners were traveling for the Christmas holiday, so in case you missed it, I wanted to point out that the crucifix behind our main altar has been cleaned. The crucifix had decades worth of dust and grime built up on it, and we had it professionally cleaned right before Christmas, so now its color and shine has been restored. If you want to see the striking before and a er photos of it, you can find them on our parish website (www.stbeatriceparish.org) and Facebook page (if you are on Facebook, make sure to like St. Beatrice Church!) On another important note: don t forget that our first HYPOD raffle drawing for 2019 will take place this Monday, Jan. 7 th. HYPOD stands for Help Your Parish Out of Debt. This is a parish raffle fundraiser that runs throughout all 52 weeks of the year. HYPOD ckets are only $10 each, and every cket can give you 52 chances to win a cash prize of either $100 or $500. However, you only get all 52 chances if you buy your ckets before the first weekly drawing, which will take place this Monday. Now that being said, please remember that you can always buy HYPOD ckets any me during the year (so, even if you buy one next week, you will s ll get 51 chances to win with one cket!) HYPOD ckets can be purchased any me at the rectory, or you can get them from the pamphlet rack at the back of church (the purple ckets near the top of the rack). You can simply fill out the cket stubs, put them in an envelope with your payment, and drop it in the collec on basket. Finally, I want to thank everyone who donated to our parish s 2018 Christmas collec on. We are s ll adding it up (because we get several late dona ons), but I hope to share the total with you soon. I do know that we always receive some very generous Christmas dona ons, which greatly helps our parish, so thank you to all who contributed! St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Monday of this week is Christmas Day in Russia and in much of the Orthodox world. This curious difference in schedule has a lot to do with how calendars have been developed and changed over the years. In the year 45 B.C. Julius Ceasar gave the empire his Julian Calendar, with the winter solstice on January 6. This put an end to a system in which officials called pontiffs were able to tweak the calendar by adding extra days in as needed. He invented two new months at that time, December and January; and in order to correct the mess the pontiffs had made, forced a year of 445 days on the empire in what he named The Last Year of Confusion. The new months varied in number of days according to a complex schedule, but the calendar was still off by nearly twelve minutes a year, and lost a full day every 130 years. Pope Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1583, but not everyone appreciated his efforts. England held out for two hundred years. The year 1700 was a leap year in England, but not in France; they were eleven days apart! George Washington was really born on February 11; when the Gregorian calendar was finally adopted in the English colonies shortly before the Revolution, he had to move his birthday to February 22. Now the calendars are thirteen days apart, which accounts for Russia s Julian calendar Christmas. And Caesar thought he had brought confusion to an end! James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. THE WAY TO HEAVEN Love of heaven is the only way to heaven. John Henry Newman If you would ever like to bring up the Gifts during Mass, please simply let the ushers know before Mass. Anyone is welcome to be a gift bearer.

What We re Learning 7 th Grade We learned about qualities. We learned that just and right are good qualities. If you act just then you act fairly. If you act rightly then you are correct. To justify is to demonstrate or prove justness. As Catholics we strive to live just and righteous lives, but when we fall we can seek reconciliation from God. When we accept forgiveness then we can try to live righteous lives once again and live in accordance with God s will. We also learned that each of us has a longing to be in a relationship with God and to love him. The Epiphany of the Lord!
