Some Thoughts from Your Pastor In his Gospel John has the giving of the Spirit happening on Easter Day: On the evening of that first day of the week...jesus came and stood before them and said, Peace be with you and showed them his hands and his side, breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. (Acts 20:19ff). Luke, on the other hand describes this event as happening on the Day of Pentecost. However, we must avoid any impression of a twofold initial solemn bestowal of the Holy Spirit. Luke and John are saying the same thing: the risen Lord gives the gift of the Spirit, and inaugurates the mission of the Church whenever, wherever, and however the Spirit s wind blows. That they differ in their chronological dating is due to theological concerns, and the Spirit of God accommodates God s will to all time and circumstance. And, Yes, even our time and circumstance in this parish. Today is also called the Birthday of the Church. How simply it all began. The Church was born in frailty and weakness. It had no property, no buildings, no money. It s only resource was people, and there weren t many of those. We, in this parish, have a total of eleven buildings varying in size to maintain and property enough (and more) for these buildings to rest on, and in the final analysis our only real resource is our people, and sadly the number of these people continue to decline across the archdiocese for many reasons among the most notable being, a disconnectedness between the church and her inability to find the moral courage to address the areas of social, sexual, and financial mores that has reached it critical mass. To turn away one s eyes and mind from these realities would be to admit to naïveté in its purest form. We, as all parishes, have real concerns about keeping ourselves together as a viable faith community, not the least of which are financial concerns. But again, our only true worldly resource are the people who fuel this faith community, and this is why we need to see ourselves as individuals needing the prodding of the Spirit, bearing in mind St. Paul s words to Timothy: For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Happy Pentecost Father Bernie The Memorial Day Mass at St. Joseph s, Monday May 28, 2018 at 12PM, will be held in the Church rather than at St. Joseph Cemetery. The parish office will be closed Monday, May 28th, in observance of Memorial Day. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. Find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Flocknote: CYFMGarrison EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS On this Pentecost Sunday, if you come to Mass at my parish you will see a sea of red all around. The choir, the lectors, the extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, the people in the pews, and of course the celebrant and our deacon, will all be wearing red. We are one of those parishes that strive to reflect the color of the liturgy in our dress. It can be a sight to see. What we put on our bodies serves only as a reminder of what is really important during these liturgical celebrations. At Pentecost, it was the Spirit of God that filled those in the first Christian community. We wear red to call to mind that very Spirit, often depicted as a fire or flame. However, if we just use red as a reminder of the power of the Spirit without letting it change us, then our actions become merely sentimental. We are filled with the Holy Spirit through the sacraments of the Church. God touches us and enters into us in a profound way, just like in that upper room at Pentecost. That first powerful movement of the Spirit led to a Church that grew and flourished and remains alive today. What is the movement of the Spirit within calling you to do today? Do we allow God to move us and do great things through us? Red is a bold color to wear at any time. But our actions should be even bolder. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS 3

A gentle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of "something" causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God. Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus change the way they live and conduct their affairsall give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healedall point to something greater than ourselves working and living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit? 4 SUNDAY, May 20(Pentecost Sunday) 10:30 AM George and Agnes Dombal Family from daughter Elizabeth Pierce and family SUNDAY, May 27 (The Most Holy Trinity) 10:30 AM Kenneth Morgiewicz and Anthony Sanok from family Please Note You are no longer allowed to park on Glenmere Avenue.
