Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; Eph 1:17-23; Mt 28:16-20 May 28th, 2017 EASTER THE Season of Joy and Thanksgiving (and ends on Pentecost) by, Fr. PJB St. Augustine once prayed... May you become Who you receive... As the opening prayer for the Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy) prays so well, the meaning of Easter is indeed recapitulated (summarized). This is why, when Pope St. John Paul II promulgated the Divine Mercy Sunday that no new prayers needed to be composed: O God of everlasting mercy, Who in the very recurrence of the paschal feast kindle the faith of the people You have made Your own, increase, we pray, the grace You have bestowed, so that all may grasp and rightly understand in What font we have been washed, by Whose Spirit we have been reborn, by Whose Blood we have been redeemed. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen! While celebrating, maintaining, even reflecting, on fifty days of such joy is difficult to sustain, the MEANING of the season still remains!! It is the time when we are meant to experience, and commit to living, what it means when we say Christ is Risen! It is the season when we hear and ponder not just the beginnings of our Church (in the readings from the Acts of the Apostles), the gifts of the Spirit (in the readings from the Gospel of John about Christ s gift of sending the Spirit and appearing to his disciples after His resurrection), and the meaning and mission of discipleship (in the Epistle readings). No, it is also meant to help us to FOCUS on what receiving and celebrating the Eucharist means, and what celebration our Mass commits us to be and do (which is why we celebrate the First Holy Communions of our children in this season). For no matter how glorious this fifty-day taste of the heavenly banquet might be, God missions us to LIVE what we have celebrated at Mass in ALL the moments of our lives. Amen Alleluia!!!
