Lesson Number Fifty Eight Chapter Ten Twelve [The Time Of The End]
The man comes immediately, but was hindered. He tells Daniel that He is loved. He tells Daniel that His prayer has been heard. He tells Daniel the Prince of Persia withstood him for 21 days. The man said Michael the Great Prince of the Jews came to help (10:13,21; Chapter 12) This implies the demonic beings and righteous angels are in conflict with regards to matters pertaining to the world. Homer Hailey notes it may be the conflict between the garden of Eden and the Salvation found in the Kingdom of Christ. What the Angel Revealed About Current Events in the Unseen World: 2
The exact details of the HOW and the WHY are unknown. This man had come to reveal what would happen to the Jews in the future 10:13; cf Gen 49:1; Deut 4:30; 31:29; Num 24:14. The angel revealed this to Daniel These things concerned his people 10:14. May be a continuation from 9:24-27 The things seen refer to the Kings of Persia and Greece. And as he was then glad, he dismissed the multitude for the present; but the next day he called them to him, and bid them ask what favors they pleased of him; whereupon the high priest desired that they might enjoy the laws of their forefathers, and might pay no tribute on the seventh year. He granted all they desired. And when they entreated him that he would permit the Jews in Babylon and Media to enjoy their own laws also, he willingly promised to do hereafter what they desired. The Angel Reveals What Will Happen The Rise of the 4 th Empire - Daniel 11:36-45 The King is Rome 11:36 Vrs 35 looks to the time of the end the time appointed which is the end of the Greek Empire 11:24, 27,29,35 ; 8:19,23,25. Vrs 40 has both the King of the South and the King of the North against him. The description fits vrs 36-39 He will destroy Greece after the little horn s rise Dan. 2, 7, 8 He will enter into Palestine (11:41) but he too will be destroyed (Dan. 2, 7) 22
At that time refers to the Establishment of Roman Power over the Jews 23 Rome comes into the picture in 11:30 - The ships of Chittim (11:30) Chittim from an unused name denoting Cyprus (only in the plural); a Kittite or Cypriote; hence, an islander in general, i.e. the Greeks or Romans on the shores opposite Palestine. Strong s Concordance TWO USAGES OF THE NAME: In Genesis 10:4 the word is applied to the descendants of Javan, and indicates, therefore, the Greek-Latin races, whose territory extended along the coasts of the Mediterranean, and included its islands.
By the side of Kittim are mentioned Elisha, Tarshish, and Dodanim (= Rodanim of 1 Chronicles 1:7), generally explained respectively as Sicily with Southern Italy, Spain and Rhodes. In its narrower sense Kittim appears simply to have stood for the island of Cyprus it is mentioned between Bashan (= Pal) and the isles of Elisha in Ezekiel 27:6, 7, and with this Isaiah 23:1, 12 agree, Kittim occurring in these passages between Tarshish, Tyre and Sidon. At that time refers to the Establishment of Roman Power over the Jews 24
IN ITS LIMITED SENSE: The oldest etymology is apparently that of Josephus, who connects Kittim with the well-known old Cypriote city Kition (Citium) (Ant., I, vi, 1), testifying to the settling of the Kittim on the island. This word he further connects with Chethima, from Chethimus, and states that it was on account of Cyprus being the home of those people that all islands were called Chethim by the Hebrews. The derivation of an ancient Chethim from Chethimus, however, would make the m to be a radical, and this, with the substitution of Ch (= Kh) for Kittim, renders his proposed etymology somewhat doubtful. At that time refers to the Establishment of Roman Power over the Jews 25
IN ITS EXTENDED SENSE: The statement of Josephus, that all islands, and the greatest part of the sea-coast, are called Chethim (= Kittim) by the Hebrews, on the other hand, must be taken as the testimony of one well acquainted with the opinions of the learned world in his time. In Jeremiah 2:10 and Ezekiel 27:6 the isles of Kittim are expressly spoken of, and this confirms the statement of Josephus concerning the extended meaning of the name. This would explain its application to the Roman fleet in Daniel 11:30 (so the Vulgate), and the Macedonians in 1 Macc 1:1 ([Cettieivm, Chettieim) and 8:5 (Kitians). In the latter passage the Greek writer seems to have been thinking more of the Cyprian Kition than of the Hebrew [Kittim]. (ISBE) At that time refers to the Establishment of Roman Power over the Jews 26
At that time refers to the Establishment of Roman Power over the Jews 27 The King will do according to his will vrs 36-38 - At the time of the end: Daniel 11:40 - At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. He will enter into the glorious land vrs 41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon.
At that time refers to the Establishment of Roman Power over the Jews 28 He will magnify himself above all: vrs 37 Daniel 11:36-38 --- Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done.37 He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall exalt himself above them all.38 But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things.
At that time refers to the Establishment of Roman Power over the Jews Daniel 11:45 --- And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him. The King that entered into the glorious land was in the person of Pompey vrs 41. This king would plant his tents between the Mediterranean Sea and Mount Zion This was done when TITUS brought his Roman armies and besieged the city in A.D. 70. He destroyed the Jewish people as a nation, the city of Jerusalem fell and the temple was destroyed. BUT: Like all the other heathen nations before them Rome would fall. 29
IN CONCLUSION: 30 The bulk of Chapters 10-12 is concerned with a further detailed treatment of the vision of Chapter 8. We learn the outcome of the Persian and Greek conflict. We see in detail the course of events in Greece after the death of Alexander the Great. We are introduced to the persecution of the righteous remnant during the intertestamental (400 year silence) period.
IN CONCLUSION: 31 The simple Message of These Chapters to Daniel is God will preserve His people to the time of the coming of the Messianic Kingdom. The enemy will seek to destroy it and those who serve God in it. However, the Kingdom is an eternal Kingdom and the Dominion an Everlasting Dominion. While it sometimes may appear that Heaven and the Righteous are not victorious: We need to remember that God is in Control. We do not know what He knows or see what He sees. Also, we cannot begin to question why He allows things to continue as they sometimes do. We only know that the blessings belong to those who endure Rev 3:10. And thus, we shall stand and not lose heart.
