From the Pulpit Wndering Jews Our people hve lwys trversed the globe. From our erly nomdic desert dys we wndered through cities nd civiliztions not our own. More often thn not, our ncestors' exodus ws for the ske of survivl nd ws by no mens vction. It ws precisely during these journeys nd wnderings tht our reltives fine tuned their/our religion. Our Tlmud, perhps the gretest literry nd legl gem of the Jewish people, ws given birth while we sojourned s exiles through Bbylon. Mny of us will trvel during these summer months, hopefully not to escpe oppression or to look for new homelnd.but then gin ren t we ll lwys seeking to return home, grvitting towrds spiritul refuge. I recll the summer fter my freshmn yer in college when I bckpcked through Europe with two close friends. As I prepred for the dventure I remember listening to my fther lecture my fmily s fvorite Yiddish wisdom, A mensch trcht un Gott lcht: you mke plns nd God lughs. My friends nd I relized tht nothing could be more true when ll of our belongings were stolen during our second dy in Englnd. We were novice bckpckers who over-pcked, no thnks to our Jewish mothers, fell victim to ftigue nd nïveté, nd locked our bckpcks to tree. One cn lern lot bout themselves nd the environment round them if they only own toothbrush nd the clothes upon their bck. Beten nd tttered in Pris, we fell upon kosher butcher shop. My friend ordered s much slmi s he could fford for us ll to shre. Upon pying, my friend ws interrupted by n old mn sitting on stool towrds the bck of the shop. He spoke Hebrew nd ws wving his hnds. he mn behind the cshier told us not to worry bout the money nd in our broken Hebrew we thnked them. I remember discovering new kind of pride for Judism tht summer nd when I returned home I signed up for Hebrew course so in the future I could elborte upon my thnk you. Not only ws I born into this peoplehood, but I ws discovering on my own tht its wys were beyond vlue nd tpped right Continued on pge 14 Chronicle, No 9 5768/ Pge 1

JUNE CANDLE LIGHTING TIMES Fridy, June 6 Now tht we re t the end of the progrm yer, I need to puse nd thnk the three women in my life tht mke huge difference. It would be esy to tke ll three of them for grnted, so I m gld for this opportunity to mke you wre of some of the importnt things ll three of them do for Neveh Shlom not just occsionlly but on very ongoing bsis. First is clergy ssistnt, Mrci Atkins. Mrci is the person who mkes sure tht I do the things tht I would rther put off. She does the huge mount of pperwork relted to setting Br nd Bt Mitzvh dtes. In ddition to the regulr mountin of dte-setting pperwork, there re lwys some students who don t get dte when most of the rest of the clss does. here re infinite resons for this nd Mrci keeps trck of these students nd pushes everyone to mke sure tht no child flls through the crcks. She lso does the huge mount of pperwork involved in giving our teengers prts for the High Holy Dys. She reminds me when it is time to do things tht hppen nnully, like mking sure tht ll the Hftrot re ssigned for the High Holy Dys nd tht I sty on top of the Gbbi schedule. Mrci is one of the most efficient people I know. It s good tht she doesn t hve video on her phone becuse she is lwys doing something else s she competently nswers everyone s questions. Wendy Hetzler is Neveh Shlom s honoree for the Song of Mirim Awrd. I hve never seen nyone go from zero to 60 s fst s Wendy. It seems tht she joined the syngogue nd in flsh of n eye, she hd mde herself indispensble. here is rewrding, but extremely timeconsuming job tht used to be mine: Assigning ll the Torh redings for ech week. We re committed to hving the Torh red s much s possible by dult nd teen congregnts. Some weeks this entils getting 9 different people to volunteer to lern to chnt Hebrew selection without vowels from the Torh scroll. he coordintor must be very creful tht the volunteer hs the correct verse numbers to lern nd tht only one person hs been ssigned to ech section. It tkes very orgnized nd knowledgeble person to do it right without mking lots of people md t you. he coordintor lso mkes recordings of Torh redings s lerning tool for the volunteer nd is often the bck-up when someone cn t do prt. As I sid, it is very time consuming. Everyone (including me), who hs hd this tsk in the pst, hs been eger to pss it on. But now we hve Wendy who hs stremlined the process through technology nd meticulous ttention. In Judism there is principl: M-leem bkodesh (go up in holiness). his mens tht when you mke list, you go from lest to most. here is no prt of our Portlnd Jewish community tht hs not benefited from the work of Priscill Kostiner. I won t go into everything she does (it s probbly impossible) but for me the most importnt thing she does is red Torh t Neveh Shlom every 7:15m Mondy nd hursdy morning service. If there is n extr Torh reding during the week for ny reson, she lerns tht, too. If she is going to be out of town for ny reson, she mkes positive sure tht there will be replcement Torh Continued on pge 8 8:39pm JULY CANDLE LIGHTING TIMES Fridy, July 4 8:44pm Elenor Fischer Dil-In Service If you re unble to ttend Shbbt services, dil in to her them. NOTES FROM SHOMREI TEVA Connecting with Nture through Pryer Summer is ner, the time of yer when mny of us hed outdoors to enjoy the beuty nd delights of nture. As Jews, wht sources of inspirtion in Torh nd Tlmud cn help us to protect nd love our thretened plnet? One nswer is pryer. here re mny Jewish pryers devoted to nture. But just sying pryer from memory isn t enough. One needs to let the words of the pryer sink in, to feel the holiness of the moment, nd to let go of petty detils otherwise clouding your mind. With the right intention, or kvnh, the pryer cn be portl to deeper pprecition, respect, nd even love for nture. When seeing wonders of nture, including lightening, shooting strs, vst deserts, high mountins, or sunrise, we sy Bruch th doni eloheinu melech h olm, oh-seh m -seih v reisheet. Prised be You Adoni, our God, Sovereign of the universe, source of cretion. When seeing trees or cretures of striking beuty: Bruch th, sheh-kkhh lo b olmo. Prised be You, who hs such beuty in your world. On seeing the ocen, we sy Bruch th, sheh-sh et-h-ym h-gdol or Prised be You, who hs mde the gret se. Finlly, upon hering thunder or upon seeing storm, we sy Bruch th, sheh-ko-cho u-g vurto m-lei olm or Prised be You, whose power nd might fill the whole world. here re mny other such pryers, but consider lerning nd using these s you experience nture this coming summer. Another resource is the wonderful book A Wild Fith, Jewish Wys into Wilderness, Wilderness Wys into Judism, by Rbbi Mike Comins. It s in the Neveh Shlom librry. Continued from pge 1 into the sme soul of the universe I ws then serching to connect with. Hiking ll dy in the Swiss Alps I reched pek embedded in cloud. I ws lone, yet felt s if everyone close to me ws present. I plyed my hrmonic nd sng t the top of my lungs. I felt ttched to universl synergy. A wooden box stood t the highest point of the mountintop nd inside ws journl to record the nmes of those who hd reched the pek. I sid the Shem nd signed my Hebrew nme Bruch. In the pst I hd only pryed in moments of fer nd request, for the heling of reltives or the trivilities of growing up. Now I uttered words in we, found sttement for oneness. he words were there nd hd been within me but now they took on new significnce. I connected my soul to the oneness of God. It ws only lter in life tht I would connect the words of Dvid Melech Isrel, n uthor I hd spent mny pre-school dys singing bout, to my experience on tht mountin. King Dvid writes, he soul fills, crries, nd survives the body, nd the Holy One fills, crries, nd outlives the universe. he soul is one, nd the Holy One is one. he soul is pure, does not et, sees nd is unseen, nd never sleeps, nd the Holy One is pure, does not et, sees nd is unseen, nd neither slumbers nor sleeps. While riding on trin heding towrds home I recll looking through the trin window towrds Swiss skyline. I knew one of the gretest lessons I hd lerned during my trip ws the clssic cliché tht one trvels the world to find themselves nd relizes they need not hve gone fr from home. Roughing it little led me to vlue good mel, the comfort of shring, nd cts of kindness. On tht sme trin ride I remember contemplting the brillince nd ingenuity behind Judism s simple mndte to lift full of cup of wine together ech week nd celebrte the breking of bred. I thought it to be so specil to give mening nd thnks to the precious moments of life. So this summer s we pck our bgs we might wnt to include smll siddur, pir of trvelling cndlesticks, or stirring Jewish book. I would love to help you find syngogue cross the globe. Wherever it is you find yourself wndering, on the mountintop or t the prk, remember tht you re prt of people tht hs lwys found inspirtion while wy, nd even more importntly pprecites coming home.
