The Mission of Hebron UMC is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. WHAT S NEXT? Maybe it was by television. Maybe it was by radio. Maybe it was by facebook. Maybe you participated by live streaming General Conference 2019. Whatever means you used, I am guessing that by now, you have heard the results from General Conference 2019. The Special Session hosted delegates from the global United Methodist Church to vote on a Way Forward as to the church s stance on homosexuality, gay marriage, and ordination of gay clergy. There were several plans presented, with the two most popular plans being The One Church Plan and the other, The Traditional Plan. The One Church Plan would have removed the current language in the Book of Discipline condemning homosexuality while maintaining the unity of the global church by allowing individual conferences and congregations the freedom to interpret scripture. The Traditional Plan affirmed and strengthened the current language in the Book of Discipline that stated homosexuality was against Christian teaching. I was in favor of the One Church plan. I thought it was the best plan going forward because it did not pronounce either side right or wrong but was a way to let each other be without judgement. I believed the One Church Plan affirmed that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of our God, who loves us completely. Pastor Pete (continued from page 1) The One Church Plan failed, the Traditional Plan was passed and with that, good people have been hurt. As a result there will be people who are satisfied with the decision; there will be people who will leave The United Methodist Church, and there will be those who simply are unsure of what to do next. So what do we do? How will the people of the Hebron United Methodist Church react? It is my hope, indeed my prayer, that you will continue to welcome all people into our church, that you will continue to display the radical hospitality to all those who enter our doors that I have come to expect from you, that you continue to be a congregation grounded in the love for all of God s people.
