The Baptism of Our Lord, Jesus Christ The Manifestation of God The Feast of Jordan Among those who came to John the Baptist to be baptized was a man whom John did not know. He was to discover that this same man was the Saviour, Jesus Christ. Jesus asked John to baptize Him. At first, John refused, saying, I should be baptized by You, and do You come to me? But Jesus replied that it was right that John fulfill the prophecy by baptizing Him. John thereupon agreed. At the time, Jesus was thirty years old. During His baptism, a miracle was witnessed by those present. The heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove. God s voice was heard from above saying, This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased! The feast day of Christ s baptism is also called the Manifestation of God because during the event, the Holy Trinity appeared God the Father, whose voice was heard; God the Son, who was baptized in the River Jordan; God the Holy Spirit, which appeared in the form of a dove. It was not only John the Baptist who announced to those present that the Man before him was Jesus Christ, the Saviour, but God Himself attested to it. The feast day of Christ s baptism (January 19) is also called the Blessing of the Waters because on that day water is blessed to commemorate Christ s baptism in the Jordan River. People erect a cross of ice on a local river or lake and a priest blesses, in a ritual ceremony, the water which flows there. The people then drink the blessed water (which they treat with utmost respect) and they sprinkle their homes with it as a sign of their desire to become better Christians. The water will prevent evil from entering. Quoted from: Feast Days of the Orthodox Church, by Very Rev. Dr. Ivan Stus, p. 63 6
