Birds Feed Elijah Bible Story 1 Kings 17:1-6 Teacher Challenge Elijah was someone we might define as a spiritual superhero. When he prayed that it wouldn t rain, it didn t. When he needed food and water, God provided miraculously. We might expect such things to happen to a prophet of God. But those things don t seem to happen to us. James tells us that Elijah was a man just like us (James 5:17). God had called him to a particular job, just like us. He got discouraged and complained sometimes, just like us. He obeyed God, just like us. What s the most amazing thing you ve ever seen God do? How were you involved in that situation? What prayer was answered? and Me Perhaps James 5:16 can give us a clue. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. When nothing stands between ourselves and our Lord, when we set our hearts on pleasing Him in all we do, we can pray, expecting great things such as Elijah did. Set your sights high! Teacher s Planning 1. Choose which centers you will provide and the order in which children will participate in them. For tips on schedule planning, see page 9. 2. Plan who will lead each center, making sure to have one adult for approximately every six children. For staffing tips and ideas, see page 12. 2010 Gospel Light. Play to Learn Active Game Center: Cotton Ball Pick-Up Bible, cotton balls, basket, clothespins. Prepare Scatter cotton balls on floor around playing area. Place basket on floor in middle of playing area. and Me 1. Give each child a clothespin. Children use clothespins to pick up cotton balls, carry to basket and release cotton balls into basket. 2. Once all the cotton balls have been placed in basket, scatter cotton balls and play again if time and interest allow. Talk About In today s Bible story, a man named Elijah could not find any food. So God sent birds to bring food to Elijah. Let s play a game where we use clothespins like beaks to pick up pretend food. Ava, what food do you like best to eat? God makes the corn grow for your popcorn. God makes all food grow. God loves us. Zachary, what vegetable does your mom give you to eat? God makes green beans grow. They re good for us to eat. God is good to make so many foods grow. God is good to care for us. The Bible says, God is good to us all the time. God loves us! Pray briefly, Dear God, thank You for loving and caring for us. We love You, too! For Younger Children Children pick up cotton balls with fingers. For Older Children Provide a variety of implements for children to use in picking up cotton balls (tongs, tweezers, spoons, etc.). 378 2010 Gospel Light. Makes food grow. Sends rain to make plants grow.) Kayla, what is something you like to do with your family? Eating dinner together is a good thing to do. Your parents give you good food to eat because they love and care for you. The Bible says, God cares for us because God loves us. God loves us all the time! Pray briefly, Dear God, we are glad that You love us. We love You, too! For Younger Children Instead of using craft feathers, children use markers to decorate bird. Talk About The Bible says, God loves and cares for us all the time. Let s build our houses and act out the ways God loves and cares for us in the daytime and the nighttime. Samuel, the sun has come up! What do you do when the sun comes up? God cares for you when you get out of bed in the morning. Jessica, the moon is in the sky. What does your family do in the evening? Eating dinner is a good thing to do. God gives you people to care for you and make you dinner. God cares for you in the evening. God loves and cares for you wherever you are. Natalie, who do you go to the beach with? God gives you a mom and a dad to care for you. God loves and cares for us all the time. Tell the story using the pictured motions (keywords in bold) or show Bible Story 21 pictures. Where do you go to get food? Let s listen to a story about a man who got food in a very unusual way. One day God gave His helper Elijah a very important message. There will be no rain for a long, long time, God said. If there is no rain, Elijah thought, I ll have nothing to drink. And no food can grow, so I ll have nothing to eat! I will take care of you, God said to Elijah. I have a special place for you to live. This special place is by a little stream of water. I will send food to you. Elijah began the long walk to the place where God had told him to go. Step, step, step. Elijah walked down hills. Elijah walked up hills. Tap, tap, tap went his strong walking stick on the rocky path. Finally, Elijah came to the place by the little stream. Elijah was very tired. He drank the cool water from the stream. He felt better! Elijah sat down by the stream and looked around. Not far away, all the plants were dry and brown. There was no food growing here. There were no people. There were no houses. There weren t even any stores where Elijah could buy food. What am I going to eat? Elijah thought. Then he remembered, God said He would take care of me. And God always does what He says. Elijah waited by the stream. Soon he saw birds big black birds flying toward him. They flew nearer and nearer and nearer. The birds are holding something, Elijah thought. As the birds flew closer, Elijah saw that some birds carried bread. Other birds carried meat. They brought the food to Elijah! God used birds to bring food to Elijah God did just what He said He would do. God loved Elijah! Every night and every morning God sent the birds with food for Elijah. God was good to Elijah. 382 2010 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Growing with God Leader s Guide
