THE RENEWAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF HAVRE DE GRACE 551 Franklin Street, Havre de Grace, MD 21078 Church (410) 939-3611 March 2019 Dear Friends, The church season of Lent begins this month. This season is built upon Jesus 40 days in the wilderness (Luke 4: 1-15). During this time Jesus ate nothing. So we can observe Lent by fasting or giving up something. But the real focus of this season is about intentional living and the commitments we make and honor throughout our life. In the wilderness, Jesus is confronted with choices about his life and how he will conduct his ministry. He is offered bread when he is hungry. Will his life be just about getting what he wants? Or will he live by what God wants for his life? Jesus is offered power. Will he seek to have control over others or give us the freedom to choose the way of God? He is challenged to test God, to see if God really is all we claim God to be. Jesus refuses to test God but shows his simple trust in the faithfulness of God. We all spend time in the wilderness, and we all struggle with making the right choices in life. Sometimes our wilderness time is not something we choose. But during Lent we choose to go into the wilderness with Jesus and reflect on the commitment he made there. During Lent we reflect on how Jesus wilderness experience shaped his life and how he remained faithful to the choices he made in the wilderness. The choices we make in our wilderness time make all the difference in our lives too. Faithfully, Rich (linkmail06@gmail.com) 1
