FIRST CHRISTIAN TIMES First Christian Church (Disciples Of Christ) Monday, January 13, 2014 The purpose of this church shall be as revealed in the New Testament: to win people to faith in Jesus Christ and commit them actively to the church; to help them grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ that increasingly they may know and do His will and to work for the unity of all Christians. The word "epiphany" means "to show" and it refers to the demonstration of the glory of God in sending Christ into the world. Traditionally, Epiphany is the time of the visit of the Magi, also known as wise men or the Three Kings. Epiphany, in some ways, is an "expansion" of Christmas. It increases our understanding of our Savior in our faith and lives. At Christmas we commemorate a historical event, the birth of Jesus. The Epiphany, however, commemorates no event but is a season where we discover and celebrate the true significance of the coming of Jesus, the Christ, the Messiah. The idea of the Epiphany is that the Christ, who was born in Bethlehem is recognized by the world. He was manifested as God, and the world recognizes him as God. In the season of Epiphany the humble and helpless baby Jesus is revealed to us as the mighty and merciful Savior God. We follow the wise men guided by a divine star to worship the King of all people in all the world. We hear the testimony of the Father at Jesus' baptism, "This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased." We watch Jesus do only things that God can do: turn water into wine, heal the sick, and raise the dead. We walk up the mountain with Peter, James and John and witness the Transfiguration of Jesus, beholding his glory and brilliance as God. Wow! And all the while Epiphany happens again. In us. The glory of God is revealed in our lives, shining in the dark places and making them glow with the brilliance of promises made and kept. The saving forgiveness of God is revealed in our lives, cleansing sin and purifying us for service to our Lord. The strength of God is revealed in our lives, girding us up to stand firm through times of trouble and to take leaps of joyful faith into uncharted days and months ahead. That's Epiphany. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." -- John 3:16. Thanks be to God for his boundless love. Blessings and Peace, Pastor Mike
