Summary requirements for MA-Ph.D. in Classics with Emphasis in Ancient History before Fall 2017 Course Requirements for MA/PhD Classics 201 minar (MA) Classics 211, 212, 213 (MA) 4 graduate courses in Greek or Latin authors, including 2 Classics seminars (231, 232, 233, 234, 235) per year 6 graduate courses in Ancient History, including one at PhD level in Roman History if the exam is in Greek History, and vice versa. At least two quarters must be taken in the History Department. (4 for MA + 2 for PhD) 2 + 4 seminars (2 at MA level; 4 at PhD level) Paper Requirements for MA/PhD 2 short papers (MA) 6 seminar papers (2 for MA + 4 for PhD) Exam Requirements MA Greek Sight Translation Exam MA Latin Sight Translation Exam PhD Greek Sight Translation Exam PhD Latin Sight Translation Exam Greek History Exam OR Roman History Exam (MA) Greek OR Roman history PhD field exam, of a more specialized nature Significant paper on a topic or area that will contribute to the dissertation, presented in written form to the committee and oral form to the department (PhD) Modern Language Exam German and either French or Italian (1 for MA and 2 for PhD) Oral Qualifying Exam: 3 hours (PhD) 1

Reading Lists for MA/Ph.D. in Classics, Emphasis in Ancient history Note: The Greek and Latin sight exams are based on reading lists somewhat shorter than the straight Classics M.A. and Ph.D. reading lists, with a greater emphasis on historical authors. The student must designate either Greek or Latin as the major language and the other as the minor. The reading list will be longer for the major language. The standard of translation will be the same as for the straight Classics sight exams.
