October 14, 2018 4 From the Pastor s Desk Today, our first reading speaks of the value of wisdom. I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. We are told that God s wisdom is more precious than any earthly riches or power. Wisdom brings peace; wealth tends to bring strife. Wisdom s contentment fosters life and love, justice and dignity. When we possess this, we possess all good things and countless riches. We are called to be generous with our Time, Talent, and Treasure, as guided by God s Wisdom. Only then can we be blessed with the countless riches of His Wisdom and the path to eternal life. The Letter to the Hebrews (second reading) shows us another way to obtain the gift of such wisdom. It is available to us right in the Scriptures. Indeed the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. The Bible is the living Word of God. God speaks to us in a human language. Every time we read the Scriptures prayerfully, the Lord will speak to us and enrich us with His wisdom. In today s Gospel, Jesus invited a rich man to make a choice. He asked him Go, sell what you have, give to the poor and come follow me (Mk 10:21). But the man who had many possessions was far too attached to them and chose to turn away instead of embracing Jesus Wisdom. He is probably the only person in the Gospel who talked to Jesus in person and yet turned down his invitation to discipleship. The Gospel message brings each of us to question the real cost of true discipleship. Are you and I truly free enough to value our possessions without hugging them tightly? Are we using these solely for ourselves or do we share these with our brothers and sisters in God s family? Do our faith and love lead us to answer Jesus call as genuine disciples and with selfless generosity? Let us pray for the grace to be freed from whatever or whoever may prevent us from following Jesus more faithfully. Jesus constantly invites each one of us to respond to his call. May we all answer His call promptly and joyfully. God bless you, Fr. John Francis
