Knights of Columbus NEWSLETTER Balboa Assembly Number 0040 XCV October 2017 Number 04 California s Oldest and Busiest Assembly Averaging a Color Corps Callout er Week!

Knights of Columbus Balb oa Assembly number 0040 NEWSLETTER October2017 XCV Number 03 Navigators Corner Dear Faithful Brothers in Christ, Happy Respect Life Month, Good Warriors for the Working Day! As Knights of Columbus, fulfilling our most basic Christian Mission to defend all human life and uphold the dignity of each human SK Greg Anthony, Faithful Navigator being requires continuing personal and fraternal commitment and action. Because October is Respect Life Month, I am writing to encourage all our Brother Knights and Councils to redouble our support of at-risk mothers and fathers and their sons and daughters, yet, to be born. By God s Grace, our Balboa Assembly has helped establish Mobile Ultrasound-equipped Medical Units, God-given Instruments of Light and Life financed, principally, by Knights, and build up God s Kingdom. These MUMUs are bringing life-saving, life-changing services to Moms throughout San Diego County! We, True Knights, know and, in-deed, live out the tried and true adage, In giving, we receive the gift. As we have been reminded in the writings of St. ope John aul II and, more recently and close to home, in letters from our Brother Knights, Bishop Robert McElroy and Auxiliary Bishop John Dolan, the world continues to face a dramatic battle between the culture of death and the culture of life. Every one of us is involved we all share in the inescapable responsibility of choosing to be unconditionally pro-life. And every one of us knows that in being unconditionally pro-life and taking continuing pro-life action we become True Disciples of Jesus Christ and are blessed to realize an ever-increasing measure of our Knighthood. Let us continue to bring Light and Life to San Diego and make every month Respect Life Month. Vivat Jesus et semper adelante! SK Gregory Jon Anthony, Faithful Navigator 2017-18 Dear Brothers Captains Corner Brothers we come into this beautiful month of October where the autumn season reveals itself with wonderful fall foliage in many parts of this country. This season we feast on apple or pumpkin pie, and watch football and invite into our homes friends SK Bill Redmond, and family. Furthermore, my brothers let s beseech and not forget what comes with family this month is Mother Mary and the Holy Rosary and all the Guardian Angels. In October 2002 our Holy Father John aul II wrote the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (the rosary of the Virgin Mary). This letter introduced five new mysteries, called the Luminous or Mysteries of Light, which are (1) Jesus Baptism in the Jordan, (2) Jesus self-manifestation at the wedding of Cana, (3) roclamation of the Kingdom of God, with the call to conversion, (4) the Transfiguration, and (5) the Institution of the Eucharist. The celebrations of the Church for the month of October are also wonderful and unique. Feasts of some of the most popular saints of the universal Church are celebrated during this month: St. Therese the Little Flower (France), St. Francis of Assisi (Italy) and St. Teresa of Avila (Spain). These saints come from different countries, and in honoring these saints we can include cultural dishes or activities from each country to make the feast day even more special. Let s remember that we each have a Guardian Angel assigned to us and we should show devout gratitude to God for placing these angels at our service. Having a guardian should give us confidence during all of life s difficulties. Every Catholic should know the Angele Dei (Angel of God) prayer and pray it often. Angel of God, My guardian dear, To whom his love commits me here; Ever this (day, night) be at my side, To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen. Baltimore Manual of rayers (1888) (insert your Angel - St. Raphael, St. Gabriel, St. Michael) May you all find strength through God s passion and grace during adversity. SIR KNIGHTS! If any Assembly Officer cannot attend the meeting, please contact the to be excused. The Eudists, cjm From the Desk of the Faithful Friar Fr. James D. Burson, CJM Congregation of Jesus & Mary Balboa Assembly No. 0040 San Diego, California The Witness of Through our practice of charity and fraternity; we are called to bring the joy of the Gospel to others by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson Elsewhere in Evangelii Gaudium, ope Francis urges Catholics to live in fraternity (91) and to share a fraternal love capable of seeing the sacred grandeur of our neighbor, of finding God in every human being (92). He writes: I especially ask Christians in communities throughout the world to offer a radiant and attractive witness of fraternal communion. Let everyone admire how you care for one another, and how you encourage and accompany one another (99). In July, approximately 3,000 Catholic leaders from organizations and dioceses We should ask ourselves how we care for each other as brother Knights and for our families around the country met on the topic of the Joy of the Gospel in America. The convocation was a historic opportunity given to us by our bishops to respond to the pope s call for a new chapter of evangelization. But its Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson lasting importance will only be realized if enough Catholics respond to this opportunity and write a new page in the history of Catholicism. Let each of us do our part in the days ahead. Vivat Jesus! Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori The pope tells us that we must not allow these fellow Christians to escape our field of vision. Instead, we must reach out to them, listen to them, come to know their concerns, and look for opportunities to invite them back to the faith. eripheral Vision We are called to look beyond our own immediate concerns and to reach out to those most in need by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori We need to be aware of what hampers our vision, such as attitudes of defensiveness, fear and indifference. ope Francis has repeatedly called us to go the peripheries. He once said in an interview, We need to come out of ourselves and head for the periphery. We need to avoid the spiritual sickness of a Church that is wrapped up in its own world. BEYOND OUR COMFORT ZONES Where, then, are these peripheries to be found? Surely, they are found in the poorest, most undeveloped countries on earth. Our field of vision broadens as we encounter others with deep charity, a sense of fraternal solidarity, and a desire to break down barriers, to create unity. In a phrase, we must bring to those encounters and awareness of God s merciful love. And once our field of vision broadens, those on the peripheries are no longer peripheral. They are squarely in our line of sight.
