Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday Fr. James Orr Homiletic and Pastoral Review When we think of Pentecost, a number of meanings come to mind. Of course, we have the Coming of the Holy Spirit. The account we have in Acts makes the Spirit s presence especially powerful. This Spirit incorporates us, the Church, into the Body of Christ, and makes us, the Church, the Temple of the Holy Spirit. With this coming of the Holy Spirit, we see the empowerment of the Church for the work of evangelizing of the world. The Church now has all the spiritual gifts it needs to bring the nations to Christ. It s the Birthday of the Church. It s the beginning of all the Church will set out to do for Jesus, to this day, and into the future. We invoke the image of Pentecost when we approach the Sacrament of Confirmation. We emphasize, then, the gifts the Holy Spirit bestows on us for the mission of the Church: The Seven Gifts, the Gifts of Service, and The Charismatic Gifts. Each person is empowered to do the work God has planned for them in building the Kingdom. All of this is true, but at the root of it all is the Holy Spirit s role in healing the wound of Original Sin. Christ s Victory in the Cross and Resurrection restored our relationship with the Father. We are cleansed of Original Sin when in our being baptized, Christ s Victory becomes our own when we are configured to Christ, our Redeemer. What remains is the damage that Original Sin did to us, causing our woundedness. Paul speaks of that woundedness in Galatians today. The works of the flesh are the damage Original Sin did to us, and because of our woundedness, we easily fall prey to the works of the flesh. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. Where we are damaged, the Spirit heals. Where we are weak, the Spirit strengthens. Where there is emptiness, the Spirit makes whole, and completes us. This is the foundation of all that the Holy Spirit does for us, and for the Church. Everything else that the Spirit does builds on healing, completing the work the Holy Spirit accomplishes in us. Out of this then comes the fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self -control. These all arise out of a healed person. This healed person then becomes a witness to the Victory of Christ, and the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. So how do we open ourselves to all the work the Holy Spirit would accomplish in our lives? First, we must trust God. That sounds a little obvious, and doesn t our being here in Church mean that we trust God? Well, not as much as we would like to believe it does. We like to have control of ourselves, and those we love. To trust God means that we must be willing to give up our own expectations, and allow God to guide us in ways that we may not want. Talk about difficult. How many parents upon hearing their child say they are thinking of a vocation in the Church do all they can to talk them out of it. Rather, wouldn t it be better that both parent and child should seek what God wants, and then follow it? Feel your gut clench? That s the point at which trust in God fails. If we are to be open to the Holy Spirit, we must be totally open. Second, our openness to the Holy Spirit needs our knowing that he wants our happiness, joy, peace, and all that it takes to make us healthy. Again, doesn t it mean if we are here in Church, that we already know that? Not necessarily. When we play a la carte Catholicism, and accept this teaching, and that teaching, but not those teachings, we cut ourselves off from all that it takes for the Spirit to give us a healthy, complete life as God had intended from the beginning, and the Victory of Christ was meant to restore. Well, aren t those the teachings of the Church, not Christ? By the power of the Holy Spirit in the Church, it s all the teaching of Christ. Christ himself promised to send the Holy Spirit to remind the Church of all that he taught. The Holy Spirit is the guarantor of the teaching of the Church. Lastly, we need to be open to all that the Holy Spirit would give us. The Holy Spirit floods us with all that we need, and so much more. But our own preconceptions and impressions do not allow the Holy Spirit to flow freely in our lives. God does not force our free will. If we do not allow, God will not allow. Let the tornado of the powerful wind of the Holy Spirit overtake us, fill us, and lead us into the glory of the Kingdom of God!

Page 4 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish May 20, 2018 From the Our Lady of Lourdes Department of Religious Education Registration for the 2018-19 school year is now open. We urge you to register ASAP to assure your child a place in your desired timeslot. Early bird discounted tuition is in effect until May 31. ****** Please consider volunteering to share your faith with the youth of our parish. For the 2018-19 school year, we need: Catechists (religion teachers) in the Wednesday 5:45pm and 7:15pm sessions. On-call substitute teachers, special education teachers, and office helpers. Guest speakers to share their faith experience, or to present any relevant topic, to groups of parents and/or groups of students. If any of our parishioners have suggestions for special activities or projects to enhance the faith journey of the children and/or the families in our program, please let us know! ****** Many of our First Communicants, dressed in their communion outfits, celebrated the Blessed Mother at our May Crowning event. Because of the inclement weather forecast, the ceremony took place inside the church. After the 12:30pm Mass, recently Confirmed students Anthony Domingo, Andielynn Llamas, Julianne McNally, and Vianney Nzerube led the First Communicants in a procession around the church. Charlotte Pachucki and Gerry Wagner carried the crown of flowers, and the Blessed Mother was crowned by Jaadler Jameau. Then, all the children placed carnations in vases at the foot of the Blessed Mother.

The funeral was closed to the public - no one from the media or from Alfie s Army was able to attend. The hearse was decorated in flowers with the words Warrior and Our Hero on top. The casket was adorned with a heart and the words Alfie s Army on it. A million people registered at the family s Facebook page to support Alfie s parents in their battle against the British courts and hospital system intent on taking Alfie s life and denying the Evans their parental rights. Hundreds of supporters lined the streets as the funeral procession made its way to the cemetery. One mom who traveled from Liverpool said, I wanted to come and show my respect to the family and the little boy. I don t think any parents should have to go through what they have. Just before the funeral it was announced that the British government is investigating the Christian organization that helped Alfie s parents in their battle to have their son receive the care he needed. Prime Minister Theresa May defended the hospital and said that medical experts ought to be the ones to make decisions in such cases as opposed to parents and family. Terri Schiavo s brother Bobby Schindler, head of the Terrie Schiavo Life & Hope Network said, Like Tom and Kate Evans, I know how terrible it is to be powerless to care for a loved one, but I cannot imagine the unique tragedy of being prevented from caring for a child in the way that the United Kingdom and European Courts barred them from exercising what so many recognize as their basic parental rights to provide care. We will honor Alfie s memory, and we will do whatever we can to affirm the value of every life, regardless of condition and the right of every parent to care for their children in a life-affirming way. Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee stated, Let s be clear: Alfie Evans was sentenced to death by Britain s National Health Service and the High Court. Their intransigent commitment to the country s faulty single-payer health system led them to conclude it was better for Alfie to die than leave the country and receive potentially life-saving treatment elsewhere. Pope Francis repeatedly spoke on Alfie s behalf and urged that Alfie s parents be permitted to bring him to Italy. Members of Parliament are leading a new campaign to debate the matter in the House of Commons, with potential plans for Alfie s Law.

Page 12 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish May 20, 2018 Dear Friends, How blessed we are! Recently, Lenten observances of fasting and almsgiving brought us to the solemn progression of Holy Week, which itself was transformed by the power, celebration and joy of Jesus Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Truly, these were grace-filled moments. Now, Pope Francis again offers us a beautiful message of hope and unity by asking us to remember the glory of Jesus who is present to give us strength. The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is a wonderful opportunity for us to display just such unity and strength. By supporting the Appeal, we assist the Church on Long Island to provide services which our parish could never provide alone impacting the lives of thousands of people through ministries and programs that make Dramatic Missionary Growth possible across Long Island. The 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal recognizes the sacredness and dignity of every human person. CMA funds support diocesan, hospital and prison ministries; CMA funds also support educational efforts to help form priests, volunteers, lay ministers and deacons who strive on a daily basis to spread the Gospel throughout Long Island. And, most importantly, the CMA supports our very own parish ministries. Each gift - every gift - your gift - is so important, much needed and greatly appreciated! Please join me in supporting the great work of the Church here on Long Island - and within our own parish community - by making a donation to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal. We have been richly blessed; let our generosity help those for whom life is more difficult. I encourage you - personally and prayerfully - to consider making a donation to the CMA. In so doing, you will be generously investing yourself in Dramatic Missionary Growth that lies at the heart of our parish community. Sincerely yours in Christ, Reverend Monsignor James P. Lisante Pastor
