MAMBALAM TIMES The Neighbourhood Newspaper for T. Nagar & Mambalam www.mambalamtimes.in C M Y K Vol. 17, No. 26 858th Issue : November 26 - December 2, 2011 Another plan for multi-level parking lot Yet another plan for a multilevel parking lot in T. Nagar is on the anvil with all the earlier ones having not seen the light of day. The Corporation Council adopted a resolution on Nov. 23 approving the setting up of a fully automated multi-storied parking lot on Bashyam Road on the eastern side of Now the T. Nagar - Mambalam edition of Mambalam Times can be accessed in www.mambalamtimes.in FREE Panagal Park which will be able to accommodate 200 cars. (The stretch is already being used as a paid parking lot as seen in the picture). The Corporation has asked Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd. to appoint a consultant for preparing the detailed project report for the proposed facility. The State government has provided the required administrative sanction for the facility, which would be constructed on a Design, Build, Operate and Transfer basis. The proposal follows the suggestion made in a study prepared as part of the T. Nagar redevelopment plan. This is not the first proposal for a multi-storied parking lot in T. Nagar. In August 2009, Chennai Corporation mooted a plan to construct an underground parking lot beneath its playground on Venkatanarayana Road. The proposal was to retain the playground with only the entry and exit of the proposed facility coming up on it. Following protests from residents and, on the direction of the Supreme Court in October 2010, the Corporation had to abandon the idea. In November 2010, CMDA and MTC proposed a multilevel parking lot in T. Nagar bus terminus. In March 1999 Chennai Corporation proposed an underground parking lot beneath Panagal Park but gave up the idea. 41,000 copies of this edition are delivered FREE every Saturday!

November 26 - December 2, 2011 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY THE AVM STORY - 90 Paava Mannippu (1961) was produced and directed by A. Bhim Singh under his banner Buddha Pictures in association with Meiyappan. This film too had an excellent star cast with Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesh, K. Savithri, Devika, S.V. Subbaiah, T. S. Balaiah, V. Nagaiah, M. R, Radha and M. V. Rajamma. The film had top-class music and many songs became hits which are still remembered and heard to this day. The composers were Viswanathan - Ramamurthy, one of the most successful film music composers of Indian Cinema. Later, on his own, M. S. Viswanathan went on to create film music history with his immortal melodies. His contribution to Tamil film music is immense and awaits a full study. Paava Mannippu was a resounding box-office hit and enjoyed silver jubilee - 25 weeks - run at many places in Tamil Nadu. It also won a Certificate of Merit from the Indian Government. Its melodious music contributed in good measure to the success, and many songs in it became hits. The lyrics which became popular were written by Kannadasan. A poet of amazing talent, he is considered to be one of the outstanding poets of Modern Tamil Literature. Single-handedly he elevated the film lyric to be part of literature. In his simple but lyrical style he made the film song an art form. A prolific writer, he was also producer and politically active. A cult figure and a legend in his lifetime and a legend that still lives even after his demise. During his day he wrote songs for almost every Tamil film. Paava Mannippu was dubbed into Telugu as Paapa Pariharam (1961). Another successful joint venture by Meiyappan was Pacchai Vilakku (1964). Produced by Vel Pictures with support from Meiyappan and directed by Bhim Singh, this hit film too had a star-studded cast. Led by Sivaji Ganesan, the others in the cast were Sowcar Janaki, S. S. Rajendran, C. R. Vijayakumari, C. K. Nagesh and others. The tale of a dutyconscious railway engine diver who sacrificed his life to save his train passengers lives, it was inspired by a famed Russian novel. Meiyappan s son, M. Saravanan, was initiated by his father to learn the lessons of picture production and he worked in the joint ventures as chief production executive or executive producer. In later years he would emerge as leading and highly successful multi-lingual producer with enviable track record of box-office hits. He became a noted personality in the Indian cinema world and a popular citizen - a veritable chip of the old block! Meiyappan s other two sons, Murugan and Kumaran, revealed a flair for film direction and, jointly as Murugan- Kumaran ±, they made films in more than one language. They were Jaise KO Taisa (1973, Hindi), Pooja (1974, Telugu) and Jeevan Jyothi (1976, Hindi). Meiyappan s youngest son M. Balasubramaniam was then pursuing his studies and, after college, he entered the family business as producer. In later years he would join his brother as partner in the firm. Even though Meiyappan had not involved himself rigorously as before in the day-to-day affairs of his studio and production company, he was still at the helm of the AVM ship and the beacon light of the monolith enterprise. He laid down the policies and took all the decisions. In view of his advancing age he did not direct or work on sets. However, as before, he continued to scan the horizon for fresh talent. He held the firm conviction that cinema was born out of theater and the growth of the stage was essential for the well-being of movies. He was not the only person in the Indian Cinema world to have such opinion. It was out of such conviction that he looked to the theater not only for story material and also performers and others for his productions ever since he had taken his humble bow in movies way back in mid-1930s. (To be continued) He has conducted over 1000 workshops on yoga T. A. Krishnan (68) (resident of T-2/187, Kattabomman Street, Pari Nagar, Ashok Nagar and Founder of Thirumoolar Yoga & Nature Cure Trust) has conducted more than 1000 workshops on yoga in various venues including villages, educational institutions and corporate houses in India and abroad. He offers free counselling on diet based on naturopathy. Krishnan, who started practising yoga at the age of 8, told Mambalam Times that he can demonstrate more than 200 asanas non-stop for 3 hours. He said that a number of his students are doing research on yoga and conducting classes. Krishnan conducts classes for certificate, diploma and Bushes hinder pedestrians An overgrowth of bushes in the passage between Mambalam Railway Station and Madley subway service lane, West Mambalam is a hindrance to pedestrians. OBITUARY V. DHANALAKSHMI V. Dhanalakshmi (resident of Subhalakshmi Apartments, 3, Natesan Street, T. Nagar) passed away on Oct. 24 in her native place in Andhra Pradesh. She was 53 and had been a resident of T. Nagar for more than 30 years. Dhanalakshmi was a social worker and member of Lions Club of South City. She is survived by her husband V. SADANAND On a rural holiday, after a rocking bus-trip over roads laid by Tippu Sultan (who loved his horses and soldiers not only to trample the enemy to dust but as an adjunct to civilised living), we survived the trip to Kannur, my home town, and Pallikunnu my good old green village, after a flight from Chennai to Kozhikode. The non-stop rain added romance to the rodeo-ride when the conductor-commander ordered the video-crumb of Shakunthala which took us back to at least half a century and the undying voice of M.S.Subbulakshmi. The opiate saw us through a part of the journey that, on civilised roads, normally takes an hour but, in democratic Indian roads that turn into lakes during rains, three hours and, sometimes, another bonus one hour. A 10-rupee tip to the music conductor brought beautiful Subbulakshmi back on the screen, this time as Meera. Lakshmi and I thanked the highways for preserving God s trail of a million years so that, on an inclement day, we could feel God s presence through the heavenly voice of Meera a.k.a. Subbulakshmi. We went shopping to the music parlours to acquire as many cassettes of Subbulakshmi as the blokes had, but drew blank. Who listens to soulful music these days, sir? People want Mukkabala type. Yesudas, the voice of the world, will also be shunned by the soulless soon. So we don t stock them. How about a couple of cassettes of Michael Jackson? No, thank you. That is not music. It is noise which was why his doctor allegedly silenced him with a barbiturate potion. We bought a few Yesudas, Chitra, Susheela and Janaki cassettes for our stay at niece Anjana s newly built palace for a week s holiday. Page 8 MAMBALAM TIMES November 26 - December 2, 2011 New Tatkal rules benefit genuine rail passengers Free meditation classes from Monday Brahmakumaris (Ashtalakshmi Apartments, 22/6, Mahalakshmi Street, T. Nagar) will conduct free classes on Rajayoga meditation in two batches daily at 10 a.m and 5 p.m from Monday, Nov. 28. Students will also be taught how to improve memory power. More details can be had in phones 99400 38396 and 97910 92461. C M Y K Following the reduction of advance reservation period for Tatkal railway tickets from two days to one day with effect from Nov. 21 and, more important, the requirement of identity proof of passengers, confirmed tickets are now available for a couple of hours for most trains providing much needed relief to genuine passengers. Earlier, bookings for Tatkal tickets used to go into the waiting list within a few minutes of the counters opening as representatives of travel agents and touts used to camp outside the counters overnight and corner all tickets using fictitious names, according to an official in the reservation office in Mambalam Station. Genuine passengers had also to join the crowd in the small hours and try their luck. The travel agents would later sell the confirmed tickets at a premium to needy passengers. The following are the revised rules: The maximum number of passengers allowed on each ticket is 4 instead of 6. No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal ticket. Refund will be granted only to waitlisted passengers (at the time of cancellation). Duplicate Tatkal tickets will be issued only in exceptional cases on payment of full fare including Tatkal charges. Tatkal tickets will be issued only upon production of self attested copy of one of the following photo identity proofs of any one or more of the travelling passengers: Voter photo identity card, passport, PAN card, driving license, photo identity card issued by Central/ State Government or student identity card with photograph issued by recognized school/ college, nationalised bank s passbook with photograph, credit card issued by a bank with laminated photograph. Passengers should travel with the original ID proof indicated on the ticket. If the passenger whose ID indicated on the ticket is not travelling, then all passengers will be treated as travelling without ticket and charged accordingly if they have not presented proof of identity at the time of booking. In case the proof of identity of more than one passenger is presented at the time of purchase and indicated on the ticket, the passengers can undertake the journey upon production of the original ID Receptionists for 2 police stations Soundarapandianar Angadi Police Station in Pondy Bazaar and Mambalam Police Station on Madley Road, T. Nagar are among the 129 in Chennai which got Receptionists under a new scheme introduced on Nov. 21. 258 women constables have been selected and trained for the post. They will welcome visitors with a smile and help them write complaints, especially those not educated. They will then guide them to the officer concerned for appropriate action. The two-shift reception duty will be from 7 a.m to 2 p.m and 2 p.m to 9 p.m. The receptionists have been provided with stationery such as paper, pens, pencils, etc. to avoid complainants themselves being asked to buy these items. The receptionists are expected to keep track of the complaints received at the station and report to senior officers if prompt action is not taken. The scheme was conceived when J. K. Tripathy (Commissioner) realized that hundreds Held for swindling Rs. 15 lakhs from firm Rajesh Khanna (33), a native of Andhra Pradesh, was arrested by Soundarapandianar Angadi Police on Nov. If anything interesting is happening in your neighbourhood please inform Mambalam Times. 18 on the charge of embezzling Rs.15 lakhs from a firm in Pondy Bazaar in which he was employed. (The railway official said that it is better that the individual identity proof of all passengers is provided at the time of booking. Even if one or more passengers do not travel, the status of the other passengers will not be affected, he explained). Details of the identity proof will be captured by the computerized reservation system and indicated on the reserved tickets as well on the reservation chart.
