TENNESSEE DIVISION UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY SESQUICENTENNIAL NEWSLETTER Volume 2 Issue 3 April, 2012 HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL! As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, may we recognize the great gift given for us all at Calvary, and completed when Christ arose as the first fruits of those who sleep! What a great promise we have through our Lord! There are not enough words to express my gratefulness to the chapters who worked so diligently to hostess our three TN UDC District meetings. Each had its own unique setting, theme, and programs. The Johnson City ladies hosted the meeting at the lovely setting of their Country Club. At the conclusion of the meeting we were happy to share in the ceremony for placing a Confederate Iron Cross. The Gayoso ladies hosted us at one of the jewels of the South, St. Andrews Episcopal church in Collierville. It is impossible to put into words the feeling I had to actually touch the church windows that Bishop Quintard brought from Canterbury Cathedral in England! We had the added bonus that our Sesquicentennial quilt was completed and on display at this meeting. The Capt. Sally Tompkins members hosted at the First Methodist Church in Livingston, with a Springtime theme, and again, our quilt was on display. The Overton County History Museum stayed open extended hours for members to see the fence post where a Confederate was executed by Union forces. The Museum will also be flying the First Confederate Flag through the month of April for Confederate History Month. THANK YOU to all those who had any part in making our 2012 UDC District meetings such a huge success! I appreciate the way each of you received my difficult message, and I know we will continue to honor our Confederate ancestors through the UDC objectives, Benevolent, Historical, Memorial, Educational and Patriotic. Barbara B. Parsons, President 2010-2012 DIVISION REPORTS Although July 1 st seems a long way off at this time, it is really around the corner. Be sure that you are keeping notes of information and projects of your chapters so it will be easy for you to find this information when the end of the year comes. 2012 DIVISION CONVENTION Ms. Nelma Crutcher announced that the 2012 TN Division Convention will be held October 12-14, 2012, at the River View Hotel in Clarksville, Tennessee. Our President General, Mrs. Martha R. VanSchaick, will be a guest at this convention, if all goes as currently planned. I add the last comment as we all know things do happen that are beyond our control!

GENERAL MINUTES BOOKS The latest General Minutes books are out. If you want to stay up to date with all the bylaw changes that were voted at the 2011 General convention, you must have a copy of this book. Order from the General Headquarters supply room. I have noticed that some changes sent by our division recording secretary were not included in the book. They were made well in advance of the deadline, and I have informed the proper persons of the changes. I believe with the huge volume of bylaw information it may have proven an overwhelming job to deal with other changes. At least I did get the two chapters that were omitted in the last Minutes Book added back into the Tennessee Division listing. VICE-PRESIDENT NOTES Patsy Weatherington Ladies, be sure to check your UDC Magazine to keep up with the new insignia that has been approved, and also the updated order of insignia listing on the General UDC website. President s Narrative and Chapter Rating Sheets are in your packets. Chapter Presidents do not order the #43 pin on the new pins order form. Chapter President or Ex President pin is listed on the Engraved Insignia Order Form...#5. Please circle or underline which pin you want to order President or Ex President. If you are ordering a #1 Badge Set the engraving of the Ancestor Bar is included in the $75.00. If you are ordering just an Ancestor Bar you must pay.50 per letter, period or hyphen. You must include a copy of your Membership Certificate or page #1 and #4 of your approved application paper. If your Ancestor s name on the Membership Certificate has only initials that is how it must appear on the Ancestor Bar. SECOND VICE-PRESIDENT NOTES Erin Rion Scholarship applications have been signed by the appropriate officers for submission to General UDC for consideration. Thank you to all the chapters who submitted applicants for these scholarships. THIRD VICE-PRESIDENT NOTES Sharon Cain The Tennessee Division C of C convention will be held June 8-9, 2012, at Townsend, Tennessee, at the Lodge at Valley View. Information is included in the President s Packets that you received at the district meetings. The 2012 General Cof C Convention will be held July 19-21, at Gettysburg, PA. Be sure to get your reservations early as this will be a busy time for the Park. Watch the UDC Magazine for updates. RECORDING SECRETARY Donna Hamilton Be sure that you send me the updated listing for your chapter officers at any time that there should be a change in any office. Do not wait until the end of the year to send this as we need to keep current information on our chapter officers for necessary contacts. Records of all Tennessee Division UDC meetings have been kept in order, and will be published in the division Minutes Book after the end of this administration. Division minutes books are published by administration, thus every two years. General Minute books are published annually.

TREASURER Betty Brown The donation forms for the division are found in the President s packets. Please note that the Aid to Historic Sites account is the Monument Fund. REGISTRAR Beverly Boyd There is a letter and a check sheet for the chapter Registrars in the President s packets. These will assist you in doing the application forms without error. HISTORIAN Katie Walker Yes, ladies, there are only two essay topics for the TN Division essay contest this year, which are carry overs from the previous year. No chapters or individuals sponsored new essay titles for 2012. As an incoming Historian there was not time for making calls to try to get more titles before the deadline. The titles for division essays are in the President s packets. The General Minutes book was not yet out when packets were made. The General essay titles will be sent via email when they are compiled. Be sure and follow the Historian General s Statistical report for awards and report to me by July 1 st. Remember Yearbooks by July 1 st also. RECORDER OF MILITARY SERVICE AWARDS Margaret Moore If you have been reading the reports of the RMSA in the UDC Magazine, then you know we have a new Cross of Military Service available. Please work toward honoring our veterans with Confederate ancestry. It is best for you to contact me with your questions as these forms must come from me. For that reason there is not a form in your President s packet for this office. CHAPLAIN Josephine Bandy Hill Ladies, please be sure that when you have a death in your chapter you send the form that is included in the President s packet to me. Also please include a newspaper obituary and a funeral card if there is one at the funeral home. There is a division scrapbook kept for the deceased members and these are placed in the book of remembrance. Also, it is most important that you send the name and address of the family so that we may send sympathy cards from the UDC. We want the families to know that these women are remembered by our division. Points should be stressed with these reports. (A) The deceased MUST be a member in good standing at her death in order to be listed. (B) The report of death goes from the division chaplain to general headquarters. Thank you for observing and remembering our deceased members. PARLIAMENTARIAN Bonnie Crutcher Dear members, thus far I have only had to take your president to the wood shed once. DEAR ALL: This is a joke, and a test to see if you are really reading the newsletter! Anyone who knows Bonnie Crutcher is well aware that all she has to do is to look at you and you straighten up! I m so grateful to have Bonnie serve my administration in this position. She may really take me to the woodshed after this! NOMINATING COMMITTEE Josephine Hill, Chairman

WEBSITE COMMITTEE Laura McCallister If your chapter wishes to do a website, there are specific rules that you must abide by in order to set this up and before you go online. These rules are included in the President s packet, but you are also free to consult me as your coordinator. There were two new websites established by chapters in the past year. Both of these cleared their sites through this committee as required. If you do not get permission from this committee you will be in violation of General UDC regulations. Thank you for your work this past year. REMEMBRANCE OF 150 YEARS COMMITTEE Brenda McDonald, Chairman The TN Division Sesquicentennial quilt will be auctioned at this convention. The highest pre-bid will be the opening bid at convention. You must give the Remembrance of 150 Years committee chairman, Mrs. Brenda McDonald, a guarantee letter that you will be prepared to pay for the quilt at the drop of the auction gavel. There will be updates on bids on the TN Division website up until the convention. The proper form must be sent to place a bid. This is in your President s packet received at the district meetings. At this time we have one official bid of $1,000.00. Each bid must be at least $100.00 more than the previous bid. There has been a verbal bid of $1,100.00, but until the form is received by the chairman it cannot be considered. We must be very careful to handle the business of our division in an orderly manner, and you are the other party in seeing that this is done. Thank you in advance for observing all the rules of this committee. All proceeds will go to the restoration/refurbishing of TN UDC Confederate monuments, Aid to Historical Sites account. NEWSLETTER Betty Aronson, Chairman

Dear TN Division UDC members. I want you to know that Betty Aronson did not do this newsletter. She does much better work than I am able to do. I did not even ask Betty to do this newsletter for me because I KNOW that she would NOT tell me no even though she is not feeling well enough to do this. At the present time Betty is struggling with health problems that sap her strength, and she must do what many of us do, and pace herself. She has not been able to attend re-enactments, her great love, in the past year, but is finally feeling well enough to go--as long as she does not have many other things at the same time. The Shiloh Battle once in a lifetime event was one she saved strength to attend. Hopefully by the time I have another newsletter ready Betty will be feeling like Tony the Tiger--GREAT! and back in the groove. Please remember Betty in your prayers for her strength and healing. REAL DAUGHTER Corinne Davenport Remember the new address for our Real Daughter: Mrs. Corinne Davenport The Waterford 8118-B Sawyer Brown Road Nashville, TN 37221 I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH TO BEGIN GETTING YOUR REPORT ITEMS IN LINE FOR THE END OF THE YEAR. IT WILL BE SO MUCH EASIER IF YOU HAVE THEM READY BEFORE THE JULY 1 ST DEADLINE. YOU MAY ADD LATER EVENTS AS THEY OCCUR. IN CASE YOU HAVE NOT NOTICED, I AM A SUPPORTER OF GIVING AWARDS FOR OUR WORK, AND I THINK A THANK YOU IS IN ORDER FOR THOSE WHO GO BEYOND THE NORMAL IN SUPPORTING OUR UDC OBJECTIVES. May God Bless the South, and May He Bless Each of You too!
