Pastor s Reflection October is Respect Life month. It is a time to think about the sacredness of each human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. For Catholics respect for human life is very important from a faith perspective as every human being is created by God. No human life is ours to create or take but rather is created by God in his image to contribute something to the human community. Human life is even more to be respected than any other life because it is created in the image and likeness of God. Each human person has a mind, heart and soul. There are also practical reasons, apart from those of faith, which make it desirable to give each human life utter respect. Each person has something unique to contribute to the world. Each human being, from the moment of conception, has unique talents, abilities and disabilities which makes his contribution different from any other. Imagine what a loss for humanity it would have been if Beethoven, Einstein, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Benjamin Franklin and countless others had never graced the world with their uniqueness. Imagine what the world would be like if the most severely disabled person had never been among us, drawing love and compassion from those around her. The Western world has lost a lot in recent years because of a growing unwillingness to welcome the gift of human life. A contraceptive and abortive mentality, born of a desire to put self and one s own interests first has prevented countless gifts of human nature to be born in our midst and to enrich us and make us better. At the very least, the declining birth rate in our Western world has caused severe problems for our social programs that rely on a younger generation to fund programs for the elderly and the sick. That s one major reason why our entitlements are in such trouble. Maybe it s time that we rethink our culture s approach to human life and to the advantage of new persons being born into the world. Instead of thinking of them as burdens or intrusions, perhaps we ought to recapture the idea that they are blessings for us all and make us all better. Father Plante P.S. I presume that most of you have been noticing the work that s being done around the property. Some of the frames around the windows in the school are being painted to prevent deterioration. Soil and mulch have been added to the playground and to the area around the walkway next to the rectory to make them safer for using them. We are able to do these projects because of the generosity of you, the parishioners, through the monthly capital improvement collection and the annual collection. Thank you all for helping to keep the property in shape and thanks to Bob and Bo for doing a great job. St. Francis of Assisi Church, Warwick 4 October 13, 2013
