C B C B PO B 1643-221 E L D. - A, WA 98524-360.275.3390 www.northbaylutheran.org 7 th Sunday of Easter May 13, 2018 PRELUDE Robert Aaron WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Chaplain Mike Greenwalt CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for self-reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray O King of Glory and Lord of countless angels, in triumph you ascended to the highest heaven. Abandon us not to be orphans, but keep your Father s promise to send your Spirit of truth. You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST READING Acts 1:12-26 12 {The disciples} returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day s journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. 15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 For it is written in the Book of Psalms, May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it ; and Let another take his office. 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection. 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. 5

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SPECIAL MUSIC Janice McIntosh-Schonberg SECOND READING 1 John 5:9-15 9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL The holy gospel according to St John, the 17 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Following the reading The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 6 John 17:11b-19

SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Amazing Grace ELW 629 5 When we ve been there ten thousand years, bright shinning as the sun, we ve no less days to sing God praise then when we first begun. 7

APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Brief silence Blessed Lord, though Your Son ascended to You and departed from this earth, keep us, we pray, ever mindful that He will come again to judge the living and the dead. During this time of waiting for His return, preserve us from all falsehood and immorality and, by Your Spirit, comfort us with Your ongoing care. Lord, in Your mercy, Lord God, in the pages of Holy Scripture, You reveal Your salvation. Guide our efforts at proclaiming Your Word. Thwart the plans of all who desire to prevent Your Kingdom from extending to the lost. Bring to joyful fruition the Gospel seeds planted by missionaries, pastors, teachers and all Your people. Lord, in Your mercy, Look with favor, O God, upon all our mothers. Guide them as they serve You in caring for their children. Ease their anxieties as they perform daily parenting responsibilities. Bring them joy in the privilege of nurturing their children. Lord, in Your mercy, 8

Lord of the Church, abide with Pastors Brian, Mike, Mark, Gary, and all pastors and servants of your church. Guide them as they speak Your mighty Word and administer Your saving Sacraments. Lord, in Your mercy, Lord Jesus, You earnestly desire the spiritual unity of Your Christian Church. Keep us firm in the truth of Your Word. Make our congregation and its members bold confessors of the true faith. Strengthen us against the temptation to be conformed to the spirit of the times. And keep us faithful in proclaiming the joy of Your salvation to those around us. Lord, in Your mercy, Heavenly Father, through Your servant John, You give us a glimpse into life everlasting. With John s testimony, comfort those who suffer, those undergoing medical treatments and those homebound. Bring to their minds the assurance that even in their current afflictions, they can continue to look forward with eager joy to the place where no lamp or sun is needed, for the Lord God will be their everlasting light. Lord, in Your mercy, Eternal God, Your Son promises that He is the resurrection and the life, and that whoever believes in Him will live eternally. Deal graciously with those who mourn the death of loved ones. Lead them to take refuge in Your Son s promises, that they may know the consolation of Your love. Lord, in Your mercy, Almighty God, we thank You for giving the Sacrament of the Altar for us Christians to eat and drink. Let us find favor in Your eyes to receive this Eucharist in faith for the salvation of our bodies and souls. Lead us to remember that by the faithful use of this Sacrament, You dwell in us and we dwell in You. Lord, in Your mercy, Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. OFFERING The offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. If you are visiting with us, please feel free to pass the offering plate, you are our guest. 9

SDLDCB? SFC:;< 9G E;=BD> The eleven disciples needed to replace the one who betrayed Jesus. This would mark the beginning of their apostolic ministry to the world. We are reminded of Jesus prayer for his followers before his death a prayer that asked for the protection of his closest friends as they went out into the world without him physically by their side. They would never be alone, though; they would always have the Holy Spirit. First Reading: Acts 1:12-26 A Replacement for Judas The apostles returned to Jerusalem following Jesus ascension and began the task of carrying out his commission to them by choosing someone to replace Judas so their number would once again be twelve a reflection of the twelve tribes of Israel. Peter cautioned that it should be someone who was a witness to the whole of Jesus ministry. Lots were drawn, and Matthias was chosen. Second Reading: 1 John 5:9-15 The Testimony of God John concluded his letter reiterating the very essence of his testimony regarding Jesus: God has given us the assurance that we may approach him and ask for anything according to his will. God is not far off and distant, but approachable, granting us eternal life through Jesus. Gospel Reading: John 17:11b-19 Jesus Prays for His Disciples Jesus prayed for his disciples, asking his Father to protect them so that they may be one just as he and the Father are one. His fervent prayer was that his followers would have the fullness of his own joy within them and that they would be protected and sanctified as they were sent out into a hostile world. Lessons for Next Week: Ezekiel 37:1-14; Psalm 139:1-12 [13-16]; Acts 2:1-21; John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 16
