SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Good News vs. Fake News May 12 & 13, 2018 5:00pm & 8:00am AS WE GATHER Good news versus fake news. What is the difference? Whether from false teachers, Internet bloggers, social media users, misguided co-workers and fellow students, or even the news media itself, our experience of daily life can be overwhelmed by fake news: information that is misleading, unhelpful, or simply not true. We must be especially aware of this in matters concerning Jesus, faith, and forgiveness. God has testified this Good News concerning His Son, Jesus: Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:12). In the face of so much fake news, take heart! Jesus His incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and ascension is God s final word of Good News for all people. WELCOME "In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." (1 Peter 3:15, ESV) HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #909 Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation Rise last stanza Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ, our head and cornerstone, Chosen of the Lord and precious, Binding all the Church in one; Holy Zion s help forever And our confidence alone. To this temple, where we call You, Come, O Lord of hosts, and stay; Come with all Your loving-kindness, Hear Your people as they pray; And Your fullest benediction Shed within these walls today. Grant, we pray, to all Your faithful All the gifts they ask to gain; What they gain from You, forever With the blessed to retain; And here after in Your glory Evermore with You to reign. Praise and honor to the Father, Praise and honor to the Son, Praise and honor to the Spirit, Ever three and ever one; 1 One in might and one in glory While unending ages run! INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, People: nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. People: He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, People: but the way of the wicked will perish. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Holy Father who testifies to the Good News concerning your Son: People: We admit that we have turned from you. We have been led astray by our listening to the many voices spouting fake news in our world. Tune our hearts to your voice speaking Good News about Jesus in your Word. Forgive us, and heal us by your love for Jesus sake. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Jesus and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE Page 171 This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. People: (sung) Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation: 2 continued

Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia, alleluia. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Let us pray. God who testifies Good News concerning your Son, Jesus, grant in a world filled with misleading voices and much that is false, that your people hear and attend to the sound of your voice; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns in communion and love with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. ANTHEM (8:00) Greet the Rising Sun 5-8 th Grade Choir WORD FIRST READING Acts 1:12 26 (Peter leads the apostles in choosing a successor to Judas.) Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) For it is written in the Book of Psalms, May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it ; and Let another take his office. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection. And they 3 continued put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. EPISTLE 1 John 5:9 15 (Jesus the Son is the testimony of God that He has given eternal life to His people.) If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. CHOIR ANTHEM (5:00) Just As I Am CHOIR ANTHEM (8:00) All Praise to Thee 5-8 Grades HOLY GOSPEL John 17:11b 19 (Jesus High Priestly Prayer for His disciples) Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. CHILDREN S MESSAGE 4

Christ s body risen from the dead: This bread we break, This life we take, Was crushed to pay for our release. O taste and see the Lord is peace. What is this wine? The blood of Jesus shed for mine; The cup of grace Brings His embrace Of life and love until I sing! O taste and see the Lord is King. So who am I, That I should live and He should die Under the rod? My God, my God, Why have You not forsaken me? O taste and see the Lord is free. Yet is God here? Oh, yes! By Word and promise clear, In mouth and soul He makes us whole Christ, truly present in this meal. O taste and see the Lord is real. Is this for me? I am forgiven and set free! I do believe That I receive His very body and His blood. O taste and see the Lord is good. 8

HYMN #617 O Lord, We Praise Thee O Lord we praise Thee, bless Thee, and adore Thee, In thanksgiving bow before Thee. Thou with Thy body and Thy blood didst nourish Our weak souls that they may flourish: O Lord, have mercy! May Thy body, Lord, born of Mary, That our sins and sorrows did carry, And Thy blood for us plead In all trial, fear, and need: O Lord, have mercy! Thy holy body into death was given, Life to win for us in heaven. No greater love than this to Thee could bind us; May this feast there-of remind us! O Lord, have mercy! Lord, Thy kindness did so constrain Thee That Thy blood should bless and sustain me. All our debt Thou hast paid; Peace with God once more is made: O Lord, have mercy! May God bestow on us His grace and favor That we follow Christ our Savior And live together here in love and union Nor despise this blest Communion! O Lord, have mercy!
